Roll Deep wasn't vetoed? :o When was that then, long before GT was big? I suppose the vetting process is harsher now - I was told SoundGirl would likely be vetoed :o

Roll Deep was before there was a flexible vetting process. We had something called the banlist in place - people would vote over a couple of days for a track to be banned from the next two contests. It got rid of a few big offenders and worked fairly well, but it had a few blindspots in that it happened before reservation/confirmation - anything big that leaked during confirmation would be unstoppable. So we got the likes of Roll Deep, Love The Way You Lie, etc...not to mention it had a bit of resentment as it banned things some people didn't think was ban-worthy, like Timoteij - Kom.

To be honest though, compare last contest's activity with the activity of the contests before. It's clear to see that there was a huge difference...one big final was a bit fairer, yes, but in terms of how it nearly killed off the contest I just don't think it was worth it.

I think that was only because some people complained that the voting period was too long, yet people were insisting that they didn't have enough time to listen to the songs. Semi finals make me become more and more bored the more we have them because most of the qualifiers tend to be "safe". The Big Final encouraged people to be more risky and got rid of the "what song will help me qualify" mentality when people were submitting their tracks. For me, the one final concept really improved the quality of the songs. Ok, it wasn't as active, but the semis might bring back the Buzzjack-friendly entries which are, in my opinion, quite $h!te. :( Although, I quite enjoyed the last contest because the winner was amazing. ^_^

I still stand behind the fact that Roll Deep was not cheap, as it didn't get onto music channels / radio stations until like 3 days after I entered it. It was not cheap at the time I confirmed it IMO.
The OBF really improved the quality for the first two contests, but as people stopped taking part quality took a real downturn - I think XIX to XXXI were probably three of the worst contests we've ever had in terms of quality in general. Very few memorable tracks for what was really a set of very unmemorable contests unfortunately :(

This is true. For most of the past week I've had in my head 'it's probably going to semis, I ought to send something more BJ friendly that will qualify' but in the end I stuck with my BJ unfriendly song and will just hope that it passes to the final! I know what you mean though, it's definitely less appealing to take risks when you know that half of the participants probably won't end up hearing it anyway.

Thanks :) The old method doesn't sound as fair as the new one to me, so I'm glad it changed.

Unfortunately I kind of cracked... but for a good reason

I jest! I haven't sent Het, I've sent some messy pop number with rap interludes and auto-tune fills.

It goes to semis with 40, at least according to the vote that we had last year which accorded we should go back to semis provided we had at least 40 participants.

What vote? :kink:

We killed the votes and just went with what we decided, which was to have a compromise and do both formats with 1BF winning out if we had a low number of entrants and semi's for a higher number.

Oh and why would we veto soundgirl? I don't even know WHO THEY ARE. We're not as strict as people think, we just get rid of the really cheap and stuff that would be blocked by the AF rule [Extended edition] and buzzjacks current flavour of the month.

There are some things I'd LOVE to veto for being soooooooooooo uninspired but they aren't out and out cheap so get through.
