Well, Altrincham. So sort of :P

Echo Beach is a GREAT song.

Agreed. And Thunder Road is one of my favourite Springsteen songs. Don't Fear The Reaper is a classic as well.

this was given tagged so i'll guess i'll keep the song titles in.

'bj playlist'

1. Ian Brown - Time Is My Everything

I've never been too keen on Ian Brown's solo stuff, but this works a good opener for the album, with it's horn intro. the rest of the track is a mixture of slow vocals, and drum machine sounding drumming (might not be from a drum machine though), borderline sounds like an electronic song. the lyrics are pretty good too. 7/10

2. ATB - Ecstacy

I actually have an album from this act already, although not generally my sort of thing. A trance track, which I have slight hidden taste for, but I'm not very keen on the female vocals on this track, they aren't badly performed, but i'd enjoy the track much more instrumentally. It's definatly nothing special as a trance track, pretty average. 6/10

3. David Bowie - Kooks

Obviously I already know this one, lovely acoustic Bowie track, shame about the $h!te band that named themselves after it. 7.5/10

4. Barbarellas - Night Mode

This is a pretty dreadful female pop song with a pretty dreadful bad synth backing with pretty dreadful lyrics. 4/10

5. (the only fully untagged track).

this is probaly my favourite so far, forgien language indie act, slightly sigur ros-ish, some good music to it. 7/10

6. Chromeo - Needy Girl

This continues the trend of going indie-electronic-indie-electonic of this CD. This again is pretty $h!t, terrible bass, just electronic with lack of thought, horrifyingly bad syntheised voice chrous. Random turntable section which makes me cringe, wasn't quite mix master mike. 2/10

7. Joanna Newsom - The Sprout and The Bean

I always fail to get into Joanna Newsom, basically, I really hate her voice, but I like her harp playing, this has a really nice intro, and is genrally a nice track all the way through, but her voice ruins it. 7/10

8. Girl's Generation - Run Devil Run

Another crap female vocal song with crap synth backing. where do you find this crap? 2/10

9. The Beatles - Something

Obviously a great track, thank f*** The Beatles was next, after the former abomination of a track. 8/10

10. DJ Johnny Beast - Euphoria

To be honest, considering this guy's name is "DJ Johnny Beast" I was anticipating this to be awful, but it's an alrightish track, at least for the first minute, then it goes downhill. very synth driven dance track, not great but listenable. 6/10

11. Bjork - Who Is It (Vitalic remix)

Just the fact this is Bjork makes me think this is JakeWild's CD. I quite like Bjork but rarely listen to her, so i'm not familiar with what the track normally sounds like, I guess this is a pretty decent remix, I'm finding it enjoyable anyway 7/10

12. Kate Bush - Moving

Kate Bush isn't bad, but like Joanna Newsom, I can't really get into her, not keen on her vocal performances, although I respect the fact she has a very unconventional singing style. As for this track, it's pretty good but it's not Hounds of Love. 6.5/10

13. Jamie T - Ike and Tina

Best track on the whole CD, I really love Jamie T, havent heard this song in a long time either, clever lyrics, feel good sounds, explosive opening, just brilliant start to finsh. 8/10

14. Oh Land - White Nights

This track is alright, female pop but not bad, good vocal performance, and a nice backing. 7/10

15. Moby - Raining Again

I've always been here and there with Moby, I quite enjoy this track though, good tempo and beat, and i find the vocals fit in very well, he has better, but this pretty good. 7/10

16. Ruby Goe - Beat Breaking Boy

back to bad music with unimaginative use of synth, with lack of intelligence in the music in terrible, vocals and lyrics are $h!t, infact the whole track is just crap start to finish, couldn't wait for it to end 2/10

17. Siobhan Donaghy - Goldfish

Fairly average but not bad female vocal track, not megaly mainstream, listenable, although does downgrade itself at the chorus, the femal vocal performance is decent. 6.8/10

18. Skrillex - Kill Everybody

This is an alright pretty uncommercial electro track, it's far from great but a welcome addition to my ears, somewhere between Pendulum's 1st and 2nd album. 7/10

19. Sky Ferreira - Haters Anonymous

the first 30 seconds of this was alright, then it started sampling a guy saying 'whatever', and basically just became terrible, the chrous is alright and fairly catchy, the lyrics are pretty $h!t though. electro sound throughout. 5/10

20. Red - Breathe Into Me

$h!te metal/hard rock song straight out of Kerrap magazine. 5.5/10

21. Ben Taylor Band - Time of the Season

cover of 'Time of the Season' by The Zombies, doesn't keep some of the same genius notes that the Zombies use, has a sort of weird background noises, it's alright though but not a patch on the original. 7/10

Hmm... can't tell who's CD was from. Especially when there's Skrillex on it!

Anyway, my review is halfway done. I have to completely finish it before my holidays next week. ;D

Edited by FM11

hahaa I laughed so much during that review chris! You're right it's mine. I'm really sorry about the tags thing I tried so hard to get them off but it obviously didn't work. And I knew that if it was you who got my cd then you'd hate the pop/female voalist songs but I thought I'd just put them in there just incase someone else got it for a bit of vaiety. Glad you seemed to enjoy it overall though :)

1. aye I absolutely love his lyrics, I find his use of acronyms so clever..

5. Yep it's sigur ros, við spilum endalaust

10. this is where I found out about him.. :P

12. I agree! Hounds of love > everything else

13. it took me an age trying to pick which jamie t song to choose but I thought less people will have heard ike and tina cos it wasn't a single. such a shame it wasnt though, it's easily my favourite of his. he was like one of the first ever in store gigs I went to and he was so good live. wasn't that keen on the second album though..

18. if pendelum are anything like skrillex I'll have to check them out! I've heard of them but never really heard anything by them

19. yeah that 'whatever' but is so cringey

20. wow I never even knew this was a cover

The songs are reviewed after one or two listens.

Track 1 – This track is basically an intro. The intro is pretty cool and relaxing, it sounds like a type of music that can be used in the beginning of a foreign love story.

Track 2 – It starts pretty soft with violins and Asian (can’t tell which language) vocals, then drums start playing. It sounds lovely. It’s good as the following track of the aforementioned intro. It’s over 4 minutes long, but that’s not something to complain about.

Track 3 – It’s a pop song. The electronic sound and tempo is a bit catchy. It slightly reminds me of Eurythmics’ ‘Sweet Dreams’, which is silly to think of. It’s decent, but it has its cheesiness. Maybe either because it’s a bit too repetitive or the singing/chanting wasn’t my thing.

Track 4 – It’s also mainly electronic/synth pop. It sounds quite dark. I’m not sure of the chorus to be honest.

Track 5 – The start has birds chirping and a few lines of singing. Then it suddenly becomes upbeat. Haha! The vocals are very R&B/soul. Sounds familiar though, and I can’t tell for some reason.

Track 6 – It’s a weird mix of pop and tribal sound. Unfortunately, pretty cheesy lyrics, sounds a little desperate too.

Track 7 – Vocals start the song. The singer sounds like Shakira at the verses! Not much to say this one, mainly because I can’t describe this!

Track 8 – I’m pretty indifferent with this. It comes across as filler in the CD so far. If I‘m listening to an album of this act, I can have a feeling that their other tracks are better.

Track 9 – Nice start with guitars and a few male vocals, before the drums kicking in.

Track 10 – Different from the previous tracks. It’s a 3-beat track, and it’s pretty cheesy. Just a piano and a vocal at the start. I can imagine Lady GaGa and the like were doing this back before they become famous or successful!

Track 11 – A pretty interesting track. It’s dubstep-ish. The “wah-wah-wah” (a little deeper than that) and the overall feel are the few reasons. Maybe it was intended. It sounds really lovely. I can imagine Chase & Status, Breakage or Skream can produce something similar to this. And I wish the track was longer, but oh well!

Track 12 – Nice mix of auto-tuned/robotic vocals and more real vocals. It’s okay overall though; nothing is standing out in this track.

Track 13 – Not a bad track. It starts with the piano, then the vocals, and then the beats (after the first chorus). The beats reminds me of what Ryan Tedder does back then!

Track 14 – Nicely done track. Good combination of piano and dance-pop beats. Lyrics are about okay.

Track 15 – Pretty subtle track. Sounds like it’s an album closer (last track on the album).

Track 16 – Another nice-sounding track. Now it’s a 3-beat. Lyrics aren’t too bad. Sounds like something Jessie J or Celine Dion could cover for the next album.

Track 17 – See Track 16. Good sounding guitars. Nice singing as well. It’s a little bit too short though. Maybe that’s just me.

Track 18 – Starts a little with synths and other effects. Beats kick in almost halfway. Not sure of the singing. Not a brilliant combination I guess, but it’s not a major complaint. Once again, it’s a little bit too short.

Track 19 – The last track. Not keen on the vocals to be honest. It’s a bit too wild. It’s quite not a CD closer I wish to hear.

Overall, it’s not a bad CD, especially for a first timer of CD Swap like me! I didn’t know any of the tracks before. It could’ve been a little more varied musically, but that’s fine I suppose. The singing of the lyrics were not my thing (for the many parts), but musically it’s enjoyable in general.

So, who made this CD? There are little English (language) in the CD. Others are K-Pop music (is that right?) and foreign. I think this is by shakilover!

Apologies for a little lack of words for some tracks. I just don't know what to put. :)

I have listened to mine all the way through a couple of times now, and I'm not really any closer to writing a review. It's going to take a while for some of these tracks to sink in. Despite a varied intro, near the middle of the album there's a LOT of female singer/songwriter.

Also I just want to echo the love for Don't Fear The Reaper - AMAZING and probably one of my all-time favourites. And I also think it's BRILLIANT that someone put the Barbarellas on a CD - are they not the flop comeback where the twins of B*Witched try to pretend they're now Lady GaGa clones?

No CD is complete without the Barbarellas

But it is seriously one of my favourite songs in ages, one of my ultimate guilty pleasure for sure!

oh and I'm looking forward to seeing the tracklist for FM's cd, seems like something I'd really like judging on the reviews

Review | Love @ First Sight

Firstly, the title filled me with utter dread when I received it as I had visions of 20 Kylie-esque bubblegum pop tracks and I was envisaging 80 minutes of torture... fortunately it transpires that I was very far off the mark with this one...

Track 01: So we begin with a female vocal led version of House Of The Rising Sun. I feel I should know this vocalist but it's not clicking with me who it is, this will probably be a common theme! Nice enough beginning...

Track 02: The tempo picks up here but we're definitely still in the same era. Male vocal this time, love the ah-ah-ahs at the beginning and it's a nice and short track that I've found myself listening to quite a few times now.

Track 03: This sounds like Nina Simone to me. My dad is a huge fan of this sort of music and I vaguely remember him playing this while I was living at home. Really enjoying this, the sparse beat is really effective and, as it's Nina, obviously the vocals are brilliant. I'm struck by how current this actually sounds, I could easily imagine it being on the James Blake album... definitely one of my favourites on offer here.

Track 04: This one is fun, it's like a Sister Act track, yay! I don't have a lot to say about it but it's pleasant and sounds like it should be by an act with a name like Shyresa & The Wailers or something! :D

Track 05: This Will Be Our Year. I don't know who this is but the track was on The Beautiful South's covers album and I liked it. Really enjoying the album so far, lots of nice things that I would never normally listen to.

Track 06: This is called Sunday Morning I think, it's another I know the song but no idea who sings it. Maybe I know a different version? I feel this about lots of the tracks on offer here and wonder if there is a theme about original versions of more famous tracks?

Track 07: Dusty Springfield's Son Of A Preacher Man. Don't need to say much about this one aside from the fact it is one of my favourite songs of all time, just perfection.

Track 08: This begins like Sesame Street which amuses me. I definitely know this, it's another that my dad often plays. Is it Laura Nyro? If it's not then I'm certain that's who sings the version I've heard... Anyway, another that I'm finding myself liking, really upbeat and rather fun. Whoever you are, you must promise not to ever let my father know this or I will never hear the end of it! :D

Track 09: Another that I'm enjoying, not one I'm overly familiar with though. The really deep vocal is a wonderful contrast to the main vocalists and I really like the vocal heavy middle section where the harmonies really kick in. I could listen to this for much longer, it's all over too soon!

Track 10: This is Military Madness but I can't recall who sings it. Again, it's another song I've heard my parents play. I could always imagine Oasis covering this quite effectively (although I'd rather stick to this version). The harmonies again make this track for me in the whoa sections.

Track 11: A substantial change in length for the next couple. Everything so far has been in the vein of 2 to 3 minute tracks while this sprawls over 5 minutes... but fortunately I absolutely love this song. I'm familiar with the Marissa Nadler version of Famous Blue Raincoat (which you should take a listen to if you don't know it) - it's an absolutely beautiful song and I think the sleeve notes said it was a Leonard Cohan cover so I'm going to assume this is his original version. A 10/10 track in any version.

Track 12: Next up, some Melanie! Another that transports me right back to when I was a child, really good choice. She's an artist that I used to love half the songs by and fortunately this was one of the good ones. We're 12 tracks in and we're yet to hit a track I dislike, I think is probably a record!

Track 13: A change of tone now but sticking to the same era... a lovely subdued female vocal led track. I feel I should know who this is too but alas her name is not springing to mind. This is actually very similar to Marissa Nadler who I mentioned earlier, I suspect this lady was an influence.

Track 14: Things get a bit funkier now... this sounds a little bit like Mavis Staples to me but not at all sure that it is. Difficult to describe this one but I do like it again.

Track 15: This one is okay but not one of my favourites it has to be said. It's like an older version of a Del Amitri track or some other mid 90s guitar-lite band. It's okay but one track by him/them is probably enough for me. The first song that actually outstays it's welcome a bit even though it's less than 3 minutes long.

Track 16: Ah, a bit of Joni Mitchell now! I love Joni, she's an absolute legend as far as I'm concerned. This is from Court and Spark I think. Again, an artist that my dad used to play a lot when I was younger. By the way, please don't take the whole dad music thing as an insult, my parents had excellent musical taste!

Track 17: Fleetwood Mac! An act that I've only recently been getting into (and, no, not because of Glee either!) I like this one. Assuming you're a fan, which of their albums are best to purchase? I only have the 2 disc best of to date...

Track 18: Iggy Pop's The Passenger. Classic track. There used to be a program called Passengers on Channel 4 or something in the late 90s and I used to watch it just to hear this as the theme tune, took me ages to find out what it was back in the days before net access. I'm very mainstream when it comes to Iggy tracks, I can only really say that I enjoy this and Lust For Life.

Track 19: Can't remember who this is again but it's Take A Walk Around Midnight. Not a huge fan of this but it's okay, the production on the track is really not my cuppa I'm afraid. I get a bit bored of this one by the time it ends. Sorry.

Track 20: This surely has to be the B52s. I assume it's called Private Idaho as it's too good a combo not to make it the title! I like this, I'm not too familiar with their early material as I first encountered them with Love Shack / Roam but this is good.

Track 21: Ahhhh, I do believe we have ourselves a title track! This sounds like XTC to me. I'm not overly familiar with them tbh and, whilst the track is okay, it's the song that I don't feel quite fits the general feel of the rest of the playlist.

Track 22: And so we make it to the final track... and it's a bit of Talking Heads (I think). I say I think as I actually only know the Shawn Colvin version of this but I'm sure I've been told it was by Talking Heads originally and this does sound like David Byrne. This is good enough but, as a general feel, the final four tracks haven't been quite as to my taste as the first 18 were. But still, if I was going to ask for a decent playlist then I'd be hard pushed to find a better ratio than 18:4!

Finally: I struggled to know what to make of this playlist at first, it wasn't at all like anything I was expecting to receive so it completely threw me. It has however more than served it's purpose, it's introduced me to some songs that I like and some versions of songs that I already knew I liked but, more importantly, it's a really good and coherent whole which I really enjoy and would probably have even considered buying if it was a real compilation - definitely the first one of these I've received that will be remaining on my ipod in it's entirety.

As for whose this is... well I'm not totally sure. It shows a real depth of musical knowledge so I'm going for one of Suedehead or SKOB (although I have no idea if either actually took part) but wouldn't be at all surprised if it was someone like (*・_・)| also... I shall be intrigued to find out! :D

Track 07: Dusty Springfield's Son Of A Preacher Man. Don't need to say much about this one aside from the fact it is one of my favourite songs of all time, just perfection.

That's strange - I put a Dusty track on the cd I did last time and you got it.

I'm still none the wiser as to who received mine :o

There does seem to be a lot of people who are presumably taking part but have yet to contribute to the thread at all doesn't there. It's possibly a sign that they either don't like the CD they have or that it's very difficult to review maybe?

I must add that once BJSC XXXIV is over and done with, I will then start on my review of "Half Arsed $h!te" which I've actually listened to already. My review will be written and posted sometime next week.

the general theme for the album was basically me just organizing my itunes library by date and just working up, so the tracks are arranged via date (which is why maybe some of the later tracks feel slightly out of place). they span from 1960 - 1982. i guess subconsciously i was sort of picking mostly love songs (not all but) and also ones that had connections to current day music (again not all but i'll mention them). i'm surprised how many you recognized from your past / by cover versions! glad i could introduce you to the originals though.

1. joan baez - house of the rising sun

2. the dovers - she's gone (covered by ariel pink / their song 'what am i gonna do' sampled by atlas sound in walkabout)

3. nina simone - be my husband (covered by antony)

4. the shangri-las - give him a great big kiss (super fun ~ black lips' 'good bad not evil' is taken from this song)

5. the zombies - this will be our year

6. margo guryan - sunday morning (a lot of people have covered this but this is the original, she's a genius honestly)

7. dusty springfield - son of a preacher man (obvs)

8. laura nyro - save the country (sampled by kanye in 'the glory', another genius)

9. funkadelic - can you get to that (sampled by sleigh bells in rill rill, surprised you didn't recognize that)

10. graham nash - military madness (perfect <3 woods covered this on songs of shame though and it's really good)

11. leonard cohen - famous blue raincoat (youuu got it)

12. melanie - ring the living bell (<3 <3 melanie is one of my favorite artists and the album this is on is PERFECT. joanna newsom covered this with bill callahan when they were dating)

13. sibylle baier - i lost something in the hills (she made an album in the 70s that was long lost, but her song put together a bunch of her tracks and rereleased it recently, i just love that backstory)

14. betty davis - walkin' up that road (miles davis's second wife but so f***ing talented, before there was nicki there was betty)

15. big star - september gurls (aw i luv big star. their song blue moon was just wonderfully covered by kendall johansson. also this song is apparently the reason 'california gurls' is spelled the way it is)

16. joni mitchell - car on a hill

17. fleetwood - blue letter (TUSK is their best album by miles and miles. then get rumors. then get tango in the night. then self-titled. then mirage. then stevie nicks solo.)

18. iggy pop - the passenger

19. ricki lee jones - young blood (aw i love this song so much! so funky. joanna newsom recommended it in an interview recently)

20. the b-52s - pirvate idaho (b-52s are classic, though i despite love shack / roam honestly. their early stuff is so worthwhile / incredible though)

21. XTC - love at first sight (title track!)

22. talking heads - this must be the place (naive melody) (REALLY??? i thought this would be one of your favorites! it's such a classic. one of my favorite love songs. it doesn't fit in though i agree).

glad you liked it!

Ah so it WAS yours! Great playlist, I was really impressed with the different take on compiling one for BJ and very genuinely will be keeping it in it's entirety.

The main reason I suspected it may be yours was after seeing your favourite albums in the Lounge thread, you seemed to like quite a few singer songwriter efforts from the 70s so could easily see you loving these.

I'd thoroughly recommend this to anyone else reading, it's a great starter for this sort of music. ^_^

There does seem to be a lot of people who are presumably taking part but have yet to contribute to the thread at all doesn't there. It's possibly a sign that they either don't like the CD they have or that it's very difficult to review maybe?

I suppose that this is inevitable with mine, although you'd have to have a very narrow taste in music to not like at least a couple of tracks on there I think :o

BTW, I wasn't specifically referring to your CD with that comment!!!

(on a separate note, is it really bad that I've become so GaGa-ised that I now see BTW as Born This Way? :D )

Dandy hath officially lost all "alternative" credibility. You are now about as indie as I am!
