June 4, 201114 yr Unless Pavel objects, I can forward on the link that I received (which I think still works)?
June 4, 201114 yr No offence Shakilover, but I am sooo glad I didn't get your CD. Lovely comment considering the whole point of the cd swap is to listen to and expose yourself to music that you probably would never listen to otherwise. No offense, but please get over yourself.
June 4, 201114 yr Lovely comment considering the whole point of the cd swap is to listen to and expose yourself to music that you probably would never listen to otherwise. No offense, but please get over yourself. Fair enough but your CD is hardly chock full of artists that it would be impossible to have heard before is it? So I would have a fairly good idea of what to expect from your CD, hence the comment. BTW if you send me the link I will listen to it and keep an open mind.
June 5, 201114 yr Probably because I offeneded his sensibilities by suggesting I wouldn't like his compilation. Didn't think I was being particularly nasty but if I was then I'm sorry.
June 5, 201114 yr MancunianGiraffe, that’s… mine! :D 01. Hollywood Undead - Levitate - I like how you mentioned brokeNCYDE. Some of HU's tracks have screaming! 02. Rucka Rucka Ali - Go Cops! - I put a parody track of ‘Tik Tok’ in mainly for the laughs. It may sound racist, but no, it isn’t! 03. Jess Mills - Vultures - She’s the featured singer in Breakage’s ‘Fighting Fire’. I quite like her voice in this song. 04. Bring Me The Horizon - Blessed With A Curse - This is by far my favourite track by this band. This band weren’t exactly my cup of tea (though I’m starting to slightly change my mind about their music). 05. Die Antwoord - Enter The Ninja - I really liked this, though I knew many won’t! Putting the clean because I can't find the explicit one on our computer. LOL 06. Ed Sheeran - The A-Team - Not sure why this is what I put for an Ed Sheeran track. I could’ve put something else like ‘You Need Me, I Don’t Need You’. 07. Rizzle Kicks - Prophet (Better Watch It) - Heard about these guys 2 years ago in some BBC competition. 08. Katatonia - Evidence - A cool track by this band. The chorus may be a bit emo, but I don’t mind. 09. Your Favorite Martian - Club Villain - Popular thing on YouTube. I put the “clean” version of this as I can’t find the unedited one. I might have deleted it. LOL 10. Opeth - Harvest - One of my favourite tracks by this band. 11. Cazwell - Ice Cream Truck - Just for the laughs. 12. Asobi Seksu - Trails - Heard about this band from my older brother. I wasn’t really liking any of the tracks I heard. But this one stood out! 13. Dschinghis Khan - Moskau - My only non-English track in the CD. Someone posted this on Facebook last year and I found this amusing. 14. N-Dubz - Took It All Away - This is my one of my favourite album tracks in the 3rd album. 15. Arcade Fire - Suburban War - My favourite album track in The Suburbs album. 16. Chase & Status ft. Plan B - Pieces - An old sound of C&S. This was in 2008. This may sound bit outdated now (so as their other older tracks). 17. The Wombats - Walking Disasters - I could have put another Wombats track in but I don’t think their other tracks works well in the CD. 18. Jon Lajoie - Chatroulette Song - Just for the laughs again. He has funnier tracks than this TBH! 19. Korn ft. Skrillex - Get Up! - Haha! This is basically a bit of a bonus. Skrillex is a music producer, one of what he does is basically dubstep music which the track should be, with a mix of rock/metal. TBH, I think my CD is a bit half-@ssed (if to compare to the other tracklists posted so far). I mean me putting N-Dubz and Arcade Fire? A much lack of females is a problem too, I think! I must try harder next time. But I’m happy you enjoyed it in general! ^_^ Edit: Me personally won't mind what CD I'll receive. As long as I enjoy something in it, I'll be happy! June 6, 201114 yr Did Shoat give a Eurovision reject a NINE? :o :o FIND OUT TOMORROW. It's been a WEEK.
June 6, 201114 yr 09: TRACK THIRTEEN Gorgeous. This has a very cinematic feel, like it's the soundtrack to the obligatory inspirational montage just before the climax of an action movie. I'm rambling. A dramatic, lush and swirling production accompanied by some HEAVENLY and at times ethereal vocals. EPIC 02: TRACK FOURTEEN Another one that sadly doesn't click with me. Very kitsch, very cheesy European folk - it's almost like a pastiche. I could imagine it being sung by a Bavarian lady wearing lederhosen with plaits in her hair. It sounds like it belongs in the 1950s. LANGUAGE: NORWEGIAN 14. SARA VARGA 'SPRING FÖR LIVET' LANGUAGE: SWEDISH 07: TRACK FIFTEEN Not one of the strongest or more memorable efforts on this CD, but listenable enough. Cool and funky (and why am I talking like I've just travelled forward in time from a 1978 discotheque?). 03: TRACK SIXTEEN Far too Eurovision for my liking. Generic and uninspired lyrics set to generic Euro-trance sung by a female in a heavy European accent, with a chorus that consists of nothing but "yayayay yayayay", presumably as they had run out of love clichés to chuck out. LANGUAGE: DANISH 16. LOREEN 'MY HEART IS REFUSING ME' LANGUAGE: ENGLISH 08: TRACK SEVENTEEN Slowing the pace down a little, this is chant-like ambient/MOR - it takes a while to take hold, but when it does it won't leave your head. Like a male-fronted Portishead. I can't decide if the guy is singing in German (it sounds very Germanic) or French (the climax is long cries of "PAREEEEEEEE") 05: TRACK EIGHTEEN This one is a shame, because a potentially WONDERFUL instrumental track is ruined by some AWFUL vocal samples. I love the frantic and thumping techno, but I really don't need repeated, distorted, tinny AND chipmunked vocals telling me over and over again that they "don't give a fuck". LANGUAGE: GERMAN/FRENCH 18. †‡† 'GHETTO ASS WITCH (FEAT. GVCCI-HVCCI) [DJ MAQUINA DE MUERTE RAVEATON REMIX]' LANGUAGE: SURPRISINGLY ENGLISH 03: TRACK NINETEEN I feel like apologising as I have given a few of these tracks a mauling, and I'm about to do it again. This one's instrumental funk-dance, almost Daft Punk-esque. But alas it's very repetitive and the effects are all off-key and distorted. I know that that was obviously the intention behind the track, but it makes for one really annoying listen. In particular I hate the out-of-tune screechy violin. 08: TRACK TWENTY A sweet and twinkly ballad which I suspect with a few more listens will grow on me even further and I will grow to love. It's like a less wet version of Snow Patrol's You Could Be Happy. 19. GOLD PANDA 'BACK HOME' LANGUAGE: - LANGUAGE: ENGLISH 05: TRACK TWENTY-ONE Keeping in with the low-key, down-tempo feel for the album closer. Swirling ambient production with breathy female vocals - it's a bit like a colder Goldfrapp. It's the sort of thing I'd normally love, but this isn't clicking with me. It doesn't feel like there's a lot of structure to the song, just random song segments strung together complete with random blippy noises. 21. HOLBEK FT. MARIA HAMER-JENSEN 'JEG VIL GØRE DET IGEN' LANGUAGE: DANISH
June 6, 201114 yr Well I can honestly say that bar Imogen Heap and Alexis Taylor I have NEVER heard of ANY of Pavel's acts in my life. Which will of course put my own tracklisting to shame! And if Eurovision really ARE rejecting songs like 'Vardlokk' in favour of Jedward and Loreen NONSENSE, than all of the criticism is QUITE deserved. Also I am immensely proud of myself for getting the Hans Unstern languages correct.
June 6, 201114 yr I should have my CD reviewed by tomorrow. Sorry to the person who compiled it that it's taken so long.
June 8, 201114 yr Fly Postings. - A review Firstly, whoever has made this compilation has obviously put a lot of effort into it. The artwork is gorgeous, and the songs all have transitions between them. Anyway, onto the songs: 1. Starts with some violins and Cure-esque guitars. Female folksy vocals, yearning for a love lost. The drums don’t come in until the very end. A quite understated intro to the compilation. 2. More alt-folk. It sounds like Harper Simon, who I put on my comp last year. It sounds like a guy trying to play Jolene. The song is very short, I wish it was longer than its 2:15 running time. 3. A complete u-turn, going from organic to synthesized beats and otherworldly vocals. Some 80s esque synths and M83/chillwave influences. This is the sort of song that I should enjoy, but I really cannot get into it. 4. Short beats n blips track (only 43 seconds). I’m guessing this track is more of a transitional track rather than one in its own right. 5. Or not. More of the same, with soul vocals over a heavily compressed drum beat. The song doesn’t really go anywhere for me. 7. (There doesn’t seem to be a song 6, so I’ll keep to the order and go straight to number 7) Laptop beats over acoustic finger picking in the intro. Some string and eastern music samples seem to be trying to add something a bit unique to the mix. The song builds up to a crescendo where everything except the kitchen sink is thrown in. I do like the strings, but that’s about it. 8. This sounds very much like Bjork, she has a very recognizable voice. She seems to be singing in a foreign language (Icelandic?) with choral backing. I’ve never really got into Bjork apart from the majestic ‘Play Dead,’ and this song, whilst nice, doesn’t really change my opinion of her. 9. This song reminds me production wise of TV on the Radio, even though I don’t think it’s them, as there’s a female vocalist. The vocalist is very soulful, and I’m quite sure I’ve heard the song before (sounds a bit like Beth Hirsch). A good song, even though it covers some very dark territory, talking about overdoses. 10. Something rather bizarre. The sounds of dripping taps, synths that sound like a carnival from hell, and the least dubsteppy dubstep bass I’ve ever heard. Some gang vocal ‘do do do’s’ add to the bizarreness rating. I cannot take this song seriously. 11. Some synthy string stabs to start us off. Female vocals come in, sounding like MIA when she actually sings. A very dull song, nothing really stands out. 12. Another sub-minute song. Very dubby, a bit like Burial. 13. This sounds suspiciously like M83, although it doesn’t sound like it’s from their last 2 albums. Saturdays=Youth was my favourite album of 2008, and I don’t think I’ve heard this song by them before. I love this song. Definitely my favourite from the compilation so far. 14. Another song that sounds familiar. Some guitar/hi hat intro, followed by distorted synths, and male vocals. Very strong bassline too. The melody line sounds quite similar to ‘The Bucket’ by Kings of Leon, but I imagine that it’s just me. A very much like this song. 15. 8 minutes long this song. The song starts with just strings, until the 2 ½ minute mark, where some low synth bass comes into the mix. It goes mental at the 4:15 mark, with some compressed steel drums added to the mix. It feels like a classical movement rather than a song, so it might be unfair to judge it in this context. If the song was about 3 minutes shorter, I would probably enjoy it more. 16. “F**k California, you make me boring.” One of the more striking openings to a song I’ve heard. It’s very nu-gaze. It’s ok, I imagine I will enjoy it on repeat listens. 17. More computer based beats, with some heavily distorted guitar thrown into the mix, and some off-kilter vocals that don’t really fit into the mix. Very dubby. 18. Some close harmony vocals start this off. A strange mix of woodwind vocals and cheap synths come in. The song sounds like it’s in an eternal struggle, deciding whether it’s a folk song or an electro song, and not really falling into either category. The outro, where they darkness of the electro takes over than the beat changes, definitely makes the song for me. 19. Some proper folk now, definitely a marked difference from what came before. I really like this song. The chorus is really powerful, yet sad at the same time. It sounds like Kate McGarragle, Pentangle, or something very similar to that. One of my favourites on the compilation/ 20. The last song also seemed to follow the folksy sound of the last song, until 30 seconds in, where it suddenly became an electro song with a male vocalist with a pronounced English accent. It’s a pity, because I really enjoyed the intro, and hoped it would continue in that direction. Quite a weak ending to the compilation for me, would’ve preferred the last song to be no. 19. Overall, this was an interesting compilation, comprising of folk, dub, and all the bits in between. It most definitely sounds like the playlist of someone who is a regular visitor to the Hype Machine. Tracks 13, 14 & 19 were by far my favourites, with the rest comprising from the passable, to the exceedingly bizarre. I’m guessing that either RabbitFurCoat, or the poster formerly known as Medicated Soap was responsible for this playlist.
June 9, 201114 yr ^^ This was mine, thanks for the review! I think I posted in the other thread that whoever got mine may have a tough job reviewing it as I’d say this is probably the most difficult compilation I’ve submitted to date. The idea for this began when I was stood waiting for a friend in town and I started to look at the posters all over the opposite wall and the different layers of posters peeking through from behind the newer ones and the disjointed images that this resulted in... so I decided I was going to try and do a similar thing with the playlist and create something where the tracks have a certain layering to them with aspects peeking through but struggling to come to the fore (hence the cover). It didn’t quite work out though, it was FAR too bleak so I added in some more organic sounding tracks to balance it out, which in the end was probably a relief as I think they’re the ones you preferred. Anyway, enough waffle and background, these were the songs: Fly Postings: 01: Smoke Fairies: Something New One of the additions to at least give the whole thing a comparatively warm welcome. First discovered these on the Rough Trade compilation last year, seem like a promising group to me. 02: O’Death: Bugs I love this and totally agree with you that it should be longer, this was a Pitchfork discovery and I can’t vouch for their other material... this one is wonderful though, especially the rhythmic sections between the vocals. 03: How To Dress Well: Decisions (feat. Yuksel Arslan) This is the first survivor from the original playlist, I really love this track. Thought it may have been one you would have liked so it’s a shame it didn’t click for you. 04: Mus.sck: Happiness is the Best Face Lift At the time of compiling I was listening to the Nihon Kizuna charity album for Japan quite a bit, a very abstract and electronic compilation. This seemed like a perfect track to use as a transition. 05: The Weeknd: High For This One of the best albums of the year for me, it can be downloaded for free from their site too. This is the opening track and is pretty typical of the rest so you probably wouldn’t be interested if you didn’t like this. 06: Clams Casino: Real $h!t From a Real n**** This is one that was missing by the sounds of it. Similar in styling to the last track but without any vocals. Again their album/mixtape is a free download and this is one of the high points for me. 07: Hood: Any Hopeful Thoughts Arrive This is one that is a few years old now. I can’t even remember now how I discovered it, I think someone may have recommended it on a forum. It’s gradually grown on me over the years and thought I’d try to pass it on to someone else. Another that I thought you may like as I think it’s quite 90s indie in spirit. 08: Björk: Vökuró The vocal is indeed quite the giveaway! Often my favourite track of hers, this is from Medúlla which is often considered her most difficult studio album - I love the choral nature of this, I regard it as one of the most beautiful tracks I own. 09: Lauren Pritchard: Painkillers (Flotilla Remix) I am quite a fan of Flotilla and I think they do wonders with this track. It’s a lazy comparison but I think they make it worthy of being akin to a Massive Attack track. 10: Rudi Zygadlo: Perdu Another track from the Nihon Kizuna album. I agree it’s a bit weird but it stuck in my head quite a lot at the time. It seemed to fit the mood while being a tiny bit light hearted. 11: The Braids: Plath Heart Awwww, shame you thought this was dull. I really enjoy this, one of my favourite songs of the year to date. 12: Holden: Quiet Drumming Interlude / Mus.sck: Happiness is the Best Face Lift More interlude stuff really, the second half of the Mus.sck track but it didn’t flow from Plath Heart without tagging on another song before it, I opted for one of the interludes on Holden’s amazing The Idiots Are Winning album. 13: White Sea: Cannibal Love (School of Seven Bells Remix) YAY! Glad you found at least a couple of things you enjoyed. I don’t know a lot about White Sea but I do love School of Seven Bells and discovered this while searching for them. It’s quite typical of them and I think their remix really suits the vocal styling of the original. 14: Fixers: Crystals A track from their current EP, ‘Here Comes 2001 So Let's All Head For The Sun’. Glad you liked it, you’d probably approve of the whole EP I think. 15: Hilmar Örn Hilmarsson & Sigur Rós: Angels of the Universe Quite the change in style! Oddly I could have actually made this about 3 minutes shorter as it’s a combination of three pieces from the Angels of the Universe soundtrack. I really love the music, it is obviously more classical in composition and probably does sound out of place here... I just liked the patch of calm halfway through the album, plus the bass and drums contrasting the strings fitted my original theme. 16: EMA: Claifornia This is quite the grower for me, I’d recommend her album if you do find that you end up enjoying this track. 17: Forest Swords: Rattling Cage More contrasting and jarring sounds. The original playlist was full of lots of things like this. 18: Son Lux: Rising I’m rather liking the Sun Lux album. This is probably the most OTT track on it but the jarring styles are typical of the sound, I have a soft spot for this sort of thing... glad it all sort of came together for you by the end. 19: Melanie: Lay Down/Candles In The Rain By far the oldest track here. Strangely, I received a track by her on my compilation too! This is my favourite track of hers (but it has to be this version which I think is live)... the gospel elements are just joyous. 20: Patrick Wolf: Paris Another survivor from the original playlist... this is from his debut album and is more industrial than his later material. The sudden electro elements seemed to fit the idea of something more beautiful trying to push through to the fore. 21: Kiss Kiss Fantastic: Dancing and Disintegrating I assume this one didn’t download either as you appear to have Patrick as your last track. A shame as I think you’d like this one! It’s a 2 minute sweet indie/folk track and would probably have made a better final track for you. I had no idea whether you would enjoy this or not when I saw that you had received it (although to be fair, I’m not sure who exactly would aside from me!) but I’m really chuffed that you gave it a fair shot and found it interesting. I do accept that it was potentially quite a difficult listen, I hope it wasn’t too much of a trial to review and that you’ll at least keep the few that you enjoyed - even if you scrap the exceedingly bizarre ones!!! :D
June 9, 201114 yr Unless people are leaving it really late, looks like quite a few compilations won't get a review this time :(
