May 20, 201114 yr Can't Get Along is probably the weakest song on the album Listening to it now... I believe this is the DEFINITION of underrated album.. Everybody was just trying to hate them and the horrible cover art gave them a reason to do that.. I bet nobody listened to the album at all. Edited May 20, 201114 yr by SKOB
May 20, 201114 yr Its sad to know that people didnt buy the album due to the cover. I been waiting for their return and hope they cling back the success they so rightly deserve.
May 21, 201114 yr I always thought it was a silly cover because their reasoning was that cover art work is pointless now that everything is downloaded - but surely they will have to continue that stance with the third album as everything is still getting downloaded. If artwork exists for the third album it makes them look like fools in my eyes.
May 21, 201114 yr Once Upon A Time... was a really average album. Having just listened to it again, the first part of the album is just dire. Suburban Knights is Ok but the rest of it passes by in a blaze of mediocrity. Things do pick up a bit in the middle and I Close My Eyes and Television are pretty good songs. But Help Me Please and and the chorus of Can't Get Along are just really boring. Then We Need Love and Little Angel pick things up again before it all fizzles out with The King. And sorry Skob, this is in no way, shape or form an under-rated album. If people think Good For Nothing doesn't sound like Hard-Fi much then on the basis of Once... that can only be a good thing. I think it's more of a return to the debut album. I personally think Hard-Fi should leave the ballads and slower songs alone as the only clunker on ...CCTV is Move On Now, another of their slowies.

If artwork exists for the third album it makes them look like fools in my eyes. It's a bizarre argument anyway given that album covers are still visible for downloads and most albums are still bought on CD. If they said that, and that they were naive last time, it could seem a little less foolish.

I disagree with most of this. Suburban Knights is the weakest part of the first half - the following three songs are very very good - good melodies and progression. A step forward from the first album. I agree with SKOB. It's underrated.
May 28, 201114 yr I wouldn't have expected anything less :D is that a back-handed compliment I see before me?
May 31, 201114 yr Just to add to the debate about the 2nd album, I think it's extremely under-rated - it's got some brilliant songs on it, completely agree that Tonight should have been a single, I also think Little Angel would have made a great single, and The King is just classic. Still not sure about Good For Nothing, and that's coming from a massive Hard-Fi fan. It's a bit different for them, which I guess is a good thing, but I'm really hoping it will be a grower. One thing's for sure though - as far as the charts are concerned, indie music is pretty much dead at the moment so I reckon this will struggle to even get Top 20, no matter what it deserves.
June 1, 201114 yr I listened to both albums on Monday and there's not a whole lot of difference quality wise - both are hit and miss. Suburban Knights sound good.
June 1, 201114 yr I confess I never bought the second album as the singles didn't grab me- however "Stars Of CCTV" is one of, if not my absolute, favourite album of the 00s
June 1, 201114 yr I confess I never bought the second album as the singles didn't grab me- however "Stars Of CCTV" is one of, if not my absolute, favourite album of the 00s The singles were poor compared to some of the rest of the album. Get yourself to youtube and check out Watch Me Fall Apart, Tonight, The King, Television, and I Shall Overcome - although that last one was a single.
June 4, 201114 yr On this Hard-Fi debate...(haven't heard the newie yet) I did enjoy the second album, I thought the singles were all amazing and a few of the album tracks let it down! Can't Get Along had some of my favourite verses from the time and I found Suburban Knights a little anthemic! I Shall Overcome was a cracking single and I was very surprised that it went Top 40, however Tonight should have been a single too! I really enjoyed Once Upon A Time which prompted mento but CCTV, which I thought sounded a little samey and a bit messy, some people (obviously alot considering the success of the album) clearly like that in an album...but I like an album to feel a bit more polished usually. Only really enjoyed a few of the singles on that one. :( Anywho, shall give this one a spin now! Am hoping it's good!

June 4, 201114 yr do you expect all debut albums to be polished? No, not at all, but I think that might be why I struggled to get into it. :P For me, if I'm seeing someone live, I expect it to be a bit messy, but I find it okay because it sort of fits in with the atmosphere... When I'm sitting at home, listening to the album, or on my iPod, that atmosphere isn't there and I feel that the messy nature of the album takes away from my listening experience. Of course the singles, like Cash Machine and Living For The Weekend were blasted by the radio so constant exposure helped me build a connection with the songs if you know what I mean...
June 4, 201114 yr And here was me thinking that Hard-Fi gave up long ago! Great track - I see the britpop comparisons.
