So did Gaga's Born This Way + Judas

And really? Was Britney bigger in her peak days compared to Gaga's? Gaga was HUGE though, literally like received praise by so many top notch musicians.

Judas didn't get to #1 in the US. Infact, Judas has done a LOT worse than Till the World Ends over there.

I'm talking about cultural impact. I think Britney's most critically-acclaimed song in terms of the music might've been Toxic (it was the Bad Romance of the mid-00's), but from what I remember, before that especially, she was largely seen as a bit of a gimmick. But obviously she had 90% of the kids on the planet on the palm of her hand watching her every move. Lady Gaga will never even come close to achieving that. I've never heard anybody say "I want to be like Lady Gaga", yet when I was in Junior School, I don't think I knew any girls that DIDN'T want to be like Britney Spears!!

I don't know about contracts and stuff, but her album has been successful. She's had 2 #1s in the US singles chart (plus Till the World Ends which is having an insane chart run so far), and her album got to #1 too. If she wants to (which maybe she doesn't ), she can put out another album.

And even if she disappeared completely off the face of the Earth, she'll still go down in history. I think a lot of you might be too young to remember Britney at her peak, but seriously, Lady Gaga in 2009 doesn't really compare imo (obviously someone is going to chime in and disagree, but honestly, she was everything at the time).

Oh, and also, I think I Wanna Go got to #1 in South Korea or something.

Britney Spears will obviously go down as one of the 'musical greats' but GaGa will be more remembered imo. She was everywhere at her peak, getting lots of awards and will not be soon forgotten even if she died today (which is 99.99999% unlikely anyway). Lady GaGa shows no signs of fading popularity, just look at her first week sales her and in the US. Surely GaGa is bigger today than Britney 10 years ago, the only person bigger than GaGa at this time is Adele

True, but then again Britney was a teen idol, Baby One More Time was #1 when she was around 16 I think? Gaga is a couple of years older before she became famous. Plus that was around 4-5 years after she exploded before the kids wanted to be here

Oh and the Judas thing, you said Till The World End went #1 in South Korea and I was just saying, so did Judas :yahoo:

Cultural impact isn't decided on how many girls want to be like [insert celebrity] at school. The internet is at it's peak and GaGa is inescapable on the net and YouTube. Of course people don't want to be weird like GaGa but she is mega-popular and that is shown in her sales, sell out tours and amazing performances

The bit in bold, really, really, no!

You're probably comparing her chart runs or the number of awards she won. But seriously, the effect she had on culture was out of this world. To be quite frank, I've not noticed Lady Gaga having any effect on culture at all. But I think that's because all the girls wanted to be just like Britney Spears (much to the dismay of their parents!!). Even though people like Lady Gaga, nobody really wants to be like her, from what I've experienced anyway. To be honest, she's not really been a major topic of conversation amongst the people my age that I know.

Um, I don't think the Internet is a good way to measure cultural impact in the early 00's!

To be fair, Britney could have massive hits again if she jumped on the promo train.

Why compare them? Their two very different artists.

And just to pee on everyone's bonfire... Britney performed with Michael Jackson.

That's false.... a clearly big false saying Gaga has 0 cultural impact. Just because you see kids wanting to be Britney Spears doesn't mean she's having a cultural impact (it's because they all listen to Britney's teen idol pop days...)

But then again, you might be saying that because you're a big Britney fan and i'm a big Gaga fan so.....

I think it could go top 10 sometime in the next few days (not that it deserves to - it nowhere near as good as LAG6) -_- It's the type of song I should like, but I'm not really into it - not even Tinie Tempah has improved the song and the 'low bass' part of the chorus is the part I don't like the most (you know the part where there's just bass and no treble) - it doesn't work well

P.S. - don't forget to vote in the final round of 80s Number Ones Rate. Link in my sig :D

I agree but its still so catchy just checked its at 12 and both 12 and 11 (Jlo im into you) are quite close to 10 so can see them both getting in there soin

Gaga has performed with Elton John and many other noticeable artists too though...

How did they make her teleport though?! Seriously, WTF?! Were there mirrors or something? Or did they record her and then project it on a screen? :o

They were projections, she wasn't teleporting.

And GaGa is not as big as Britney was back at her peak. Just my input.

I have to agree with this and Eric as well, britneys biggest song baby one more time was ridiculously huge, and bigger than gagas biggest which could be either seen as poker face or bad romance and that IMO are both their peaks

IMO it is much more important what an artist means to you personally.

Britney Spears is a legend.

Her and Eminem were THE male and female icons of the early 00's. Songs like Baby One More Time, Oops I Did It Again and Toxic (as well as many others) were not only huge hits, but had a huge effect on pop culture and are the most recognizable songs of the last 10+ years. Britney has had tons of different styles and different looks, plus the media interest in her has always been MASSIVE. She's had so many famous encounters with paparazzi because of how obsessed they are with her. She's a huge media profile and her personal life has been highly documented in the press ever since her debut. She's grew up through the public and had 'that' breakdown which further cemented her place in pop culture (sadly :(). She's had tons of famous performances (including the infamous Gimmie More performance in 2007, the X-Factor performance in the UK to name most recent examples) and the performance with Michael Jackson and the kiss with Christina/Madonna were huge moments.

When you think of the name Britney, everyone thinks of Britney Spears. She's one of the most famous people in the world, and fair enough it might not be because of her music but she's got tons of records/awards/sales under her belt anyway!

Gaga is huge but in a different way. She has tons and tons of high sales, but I dunno, she's nowhere near as much relatable as Britney ever was and I doubt Gaga's songs will be as memorable and recognizable in 10+ years. She's exploded because she's took advantage of the Internet, media, press, download era etc and is succesful because of that whereas with Britney she just exploded because she provoked a huge interest in the public.

Baby One More Time sold 1.5 million......

Not according to Mediatraffic though..

Lets be realistic Till The World End only did better than Judas because of Ke$ha & Nicki Minaj remix. I'm sure if Gaga released a remix of her and Beyonce with Judas it would go to number one on iTunes.

I can't believe I'm having this discussion!

I wouldn't even consider myself a Britney fan. I mean, I've had a massive crush on her since I was really young and I like most of her songs, but I wouldn't say I'm a fan of her in the same way that I am of, say The Black Eyed Peas.

I mean, I like Rihanna more than Britney, but I'm not going to be stupid enough to claim Rihanna has had more cultural impact than Britney. Rihanna's cultural impact hasn't gone much further than people singing Umbrella whenever it rains and I noticed a lot of girls dieing their hair red after the Love the Way You Lie video. Britney was on a completely different level. I can't describe it really, but I just find it laughable that people think Lady Gaga has had impact even comparable to that. Again, I suspect people are just looking at their chart positions, but you have to live through it to understand tbh.

Like I remember when I was in year 7, we had an assembly where the headmaster told the whole school that most of the pupils had passwords to their computer accounts which were related to Britney Spears, and that there were some people managing to guess passwords and go on naughty websites on other people's accounts. Just things like that. Lady Gaga is never going to become that sort of idol where she becomes everybody's password.

And I remember on non-uniform days at school, all the girls would wear belly-tops because Britney Spears wears them. And then dozens of angry parents would turn up at the end of school. And there were, on the absolute craziest level, people claiming that Britney was turning all young people into prostitutes. Obviously, this sort of thing just made the kids like her more.
