Poker Face sold more than Baby One More Time though^

"TiK ToK" sold more than both of them, but you wouldn't say that Ke$ha is bigger than Britney or Lady GaGa, would you? "Poker Face" didn't have anywhere near as much of a cultural effect as "...Baby One More Time" did. "...Baby One More Time" created the iconic school girl look for example. I'm no Britney Spears fan, but it's ludicrous to think that Lady GaGa is anywhere near as big as Britney was at her peak.

Britney Spears is a legend.

Her and Eminem were THE male and female icons of the early 00's. Songs like Baby One More Time, Oops I Did It Again and Toxic (as well as many others) were not only huge hits, but had a huge effect on pop culture and are the most recognizable songs of the last 10+ years. Britney has had tons of different styles and different looks, plus the media interest in her has always been MASSIVE. She's had so many famous encounters with paparazzi because of how obsessed they are with her. She's a huge media profile and her personal life has been highly documented in the press ever since her debut. She's grew up through the public and had 'that' breakdown which further cemented her place in pop culture (sadly :(). She's had tons of famous performances (including the infamous Gimmie More performance in 2007, the X-Factor performance in the UK to name most recent examples) and the performance with Michael Jackson and the kiss with Christina/Madonna were huge moments.

When you think of the name Britney, everyone thinks of Britney Spears. She's one of the most famous people in the world, and fair enough it might not be because of her music but she's got tons of records/awards/sales under her belt anyway!

Gaga is huge but in a different way. She has tons and tons of high sales, but I dunno, she's nowhere near as much relatable as Britney ever was and I doubt Gaga's songs will be as memorable and recognizable in 10+ years. She's exploded because she's took advantage of the Internet, media, press, download era etc and is succesful because of that whereas with Britney she just exploded because she provoked a huge interest in the public.

I agree with this

Not according to Mediatraffic though..

Sorry I meant in the UK, the problem with using worldwide sales is due to the internet and globalisation, artists like lady gaga have been able to use it to get more sales while in the early 2000's it wasn't used for this purpose. Also, mediatraffic measures airplay so we can't take that as a fact for selling more

I loved her Baby One More Time, Oops...I Did It Again, Toxic songs but they weren't even written by her. They're merely panned music by writers and producers who penned it for her album so I really don't get how she has any credit for it apart from singing in the song.

And isn't it a bit too early to judge whether any Gaga's songs will be remembered. Everywhere I go around the planet has heard of Poker Face/Bad Romance....

And fair enough if Gaga isn't going to be remembered for her songs but i'm sure down the years, people will still know Lady Gaga whether if she has much more influence or not because her name is just easily recognisable and for her shocking outfits.

The bit in bold, really, really, no!

You're probably comparing her chart runs or the number of awards she won. But seriously, the effect she had on culture was out of this world. To be quite frank, I've not noticed Lady Gaga having any effect on culture at all. But I think that's because all the girls wanted to be just like Britney Spears (much to the dismay of their parents!!). Even though people like Lady Gaga, nobody really wants to be like her, from what I've experienced anyway. To be honest, she's not really been a major topic of conversation amongst the people my age that I know.

Nobody wants to be like her? Have you ever been on Youtube? Every single music video that comes out, the users are always stating 'Copying Lady Gaga' ect. and in a lot of cases it is true. It is quite obvious that Gaga has had a MASSIVE impact in the industry and the kind of music people are producing.

Also, I think Britney was bigger in her peak than Gaga was in the US but not in the UK. Britney's first album never got to #1 in the UK.

Whether or not an artist has written a song is completely irrelevant to whether they'll be remembered for it. The artist is the one that makes the song memorable. Whitney Houston didn't write "I Will Always Love You", Céline Dion didn't write "My Heart Will Go On" etc. Should they not get any credit for the songs?

Do you have the worldwide official sales list? I'm interested in how each song did as I only know of Mediatraffic

Baby One More Time sold 1.5 million......

Poker Face was disadvantaged by a massive selling album and illegal downloads, though.

Every single music video that comes out, the users are always stating 'Copying Lady Gaga' ect.

That's because she has lots of loony tunes fans who think that she's original and created the concept of being abstract and weird. Sure she's brought it back into fashion, but people are just following the trend, not copying her.

Wikipedia. I know they're not exactly extremely reliable, but all of them are sourced.

It states that Poker Face has sold 9.8 million which was got from Mediatraffic figures (which the points does not equal sales as a song with 600,000 worldwide sales is equivalent to around 375,000 points) and that Tik Tok got 13 million + .

I have no clue, I'm just going off what they're stating.

Why when discussing who had more cultural impact are we looking at album sales?

And to someone on the previous page, even without the remix of Till the World Ends, it would've done far better than Judas. The remix just boosted it for a couple of weeks. Similar with S&M.

I can't believe some of what I'm reading. You'll probably feel the same in 10 years time when some random kid goes to you "Oh, Cee-Lo Green must've been more relecant than Lady Gaga in 2010 because Forget You sold more than Telephone". It's just ridiculous.

I don't think she even popularized it really. She just became known for it, and then has had it claimed as her own by her fans. I bet if the Disturbia video got released now everybody would claim it was a Lady Gaga rip-off.

Everyone says she's revolutionized pop music, but I can't see what she's actually done. I'd say a song like Boom Boom Pow was more revolutionary, because travel forward a couple of years, and we've had numerous chart hits that've been similar to it, whilst it was more of a rarity before.

I know this, and this is a major factor but to say she hasn't had any impact in culture and to say 'nobody is trying to like her' is ridiculous as that is just not true. It is true, that its not going on as much as the Gaga fans say it is, and are looking for an excuse to say that Gaga was copied, but to say that there is no impact is simply not true.

P.S. Love your sig vid, Beyonce sounds amazing and the song sounds beautiful from that

I don't know a single person in real life that wants to be just like Lady Gaga, and dresses like her, and speaks like her. Do you?

I do  (That's not me)

Also people say Britney was really iconic etc which is true but the big difference between Britney and Gaga is that Britney was brought up as an idol whereas Gaga was brought up as an musician in the music industry. Idols will obviously have more impact on the culture.

Imo, Baby One More Time is the definitive song of the bubblegum pop era of the late nineties/early noughties and while poker face, bad romance and just dance are classics from the electropop/dancepop era we are in now, the definitive song of this era is I Gotta Feeling

I agree, I definitely think she's had a cultural impact, I just don't think it's as huge as people make it out to be. There are several songs that if brought out now, people would claim ripped off Lady GaGa. Rihanna's "Disturbia" and Christina Aguilera's "Fighter" videos for example. GaGa fans would be falling about themselves, screaming copycats.

And thanks, it was filmed by Jay-Z. ^_^ I adore the song and was completely blown away that a person could sound like that with no microphone or anything. That's why I'm a Beyoncé loon, tbh.

I do  (That's not me)

Yeah, I think that sums it up well.

Yeah. That's true. I hate Lady Gaga fans with their "Everybody's copying her fetish". It makes EVERYONE so annoyed, and is the main reason Gaga gets more and more hate now. Look at the California Gurls/Tik Tok situation. Firstly, the Katy Perry fans were, in general, like "Wow, yeah, this sounds like Tik Tok", and the Ke$ha fans, in general, were pretty calm about it. If there was ever a song that was as similar as, say, Love Game, as California Gurls is to Tik Tok, Lady Gaga fans would probably attempt to end the artists career or something drastic. It's so immature imo. I have more respect Katy's and Ke$ha's fans.
