Posted May 24, 201114 yr It turns out that the final of the 2012 Eurovision Song Contest (due to be held on 26th May), is Israeli Independence day (again!). Therefore, they may be forced to withdraw unless the date is changed. Also, as Azerbaijan borders Iran (an enemy to Israel), extra security will be needed making it more expensive for Israel to enter. The date won't be changed to May 19 due to the Champions League, May 12 remains a possibility. May 5 and June 3 are very unlikely to be chosen. So if the date isn't changed, will you be sad to see Israel go for a year? And, will the arab countries participate? Morocco entered when Israel didn't enter in 1980, and Lebanon and Tunisia both were going to enter but withdrew most likely to do with issues of competing or broadcasting the Israeli entry. Also, Algeria, Egypt, Jordan and Libya (and Vatican City) have broadcasters in the EBU, with Iraq, Palestine, Qatar and Syria eligible to do so. Do you expect any of these to return or debut? May 24, 201114 yr I never really understand why they switch it between late and early May each year anyway.
May 24, 201114 yr This year when it was over I was like 'over a year until the next contest :(', but last year it was 'less than a year until the next contest :w00t:'. Maybe they should just try and stick to the same weekend, like MF does. May 12th would be good as it's sooner (although it's less than a year until MGP & MF anyway, and MF especially is almost as exciting as the actual contest for myself & many others), but I won't really be sad for Israel to take a break if they keep it the same. If they do have to withdraw, I would very much like to see the Arab countries take part for a year.
May 24, 201114 yr I really don't get why the Arab countries should be allowed to enter Eurovision, they aren't even in Europe, and I'm still reluctant to consider Azerbaijan, Armenia and Georgia European countries. My definition of Europe is all of the peninsula that we are on, Russia and Turkey plus islands like Cyprus and Malta surrounding it. Are the Faroe Islands allowed to compete in Eurovision, I quite like to see them enter (if San Marino can, then why not!)
May 24, 201114 yr San Marino is an independent country. The Faroe Islands are a part of the Kingdom of Denmark. :) And if Israel or Cyprus are allowed to enter, then I don't see why the Arab countries shouldn't be able to.
May 24, 201114 yr But are the Faroe Islands considered part of Denmark? I'm not sure, but if they are considered separate, it comes down to them having a broadcaster that is an EBU member. I have no problem with Arab countries entering, I know it's called EUROvision, but the rule is that they can enter if they have a state broadcaster that is a member of the EBU.

They count as separate nations in football contests, I've always known them to be an independant country. They should create a 'Worldvision'
May 24, 201114 yr Denmark still have huge control over the Islands. Scotland would probably have more autonomy than the Faroe Islands, and I don't think Scotland can't enter as a separate country. With regards soccer, that's true. But the same goes for Northern Ireland, Wales etc. I'd have no problem with them entering as separate countries, but where would it end? :P
May 25, 201114 yr I hope they do move it to May 12th. I wouldn't be too surprised if they did either tbh... Late Eurovisions make May seem so long too. :(
May 27, 201114 yr But if you think that, Most of turkey and russia isn't technically 'within' europe? :P I'd love to see Australia enter considering they even vote!
June 4, 201114 yr I've never seen the point in the fluctuating dates. I don't see why (as Jaack said) they don't keep it to the same weekend. If that's somehow inconvienient to the country then maybe I'll understand but knowing the 'political' allegations made against ESC, how long will it be before they're accused of deliberately changing the date to Israeli Independence Day? At least MF is less than a year away, that is as exciting as the actual contest (well, almost) for me!
June 6, 201114 yr I would much prefer it to be May 26th, as May 12th is my best friends wedding, and May 19th having a massive family/friends party thingy to celebrate that my dad is old :P. So May 26th works for me :P
June 7, 201114 yr They've all already got these things planned a year ahead martyn?! :drama: A wedding and a major birthday? It isn't too much of a stretch to believe, surely.
June 7, 201114 yr A major birthday obviously, but I've never heard of a wedding set over a year in advance!
June 7, 201114 yr Maybe I'm just thinking of engagements without an actual date set, but I thought weddings were normally set more than a year in advance? (edit: Was at a McFly concert in April, one banner was asking them to play at the persons wedding, May 2012) Churches probably get booked quite a bit in advance, so would receptions, catering etc. So plenty of preparation time, and guests have plenty of time to go and buy outfits. I would've thought a major birthday not so much, but obviously people will already know if someone will be turning 30/40/50/60 in the coming year. Erik, the 26th is also my friends birthday. Maybe we can all use this as an excuse to go to Azerbaijan on that date, as a celebration ;) Edited June 7, 201114 yr by Jaack Sykes
