Goldie over the chart - another forgotten song.

Black Sabbath - possibly less than a fifth of the way through their wait for another number one album.

Showaddywaddy - what a shame we’ll never hear Jimmy Savile say their name again.

Marshall Hain accompanied by a standard Legs & Co routine.

Whitesnake - it’s metal night!

Heatwave - mind blowingly boring.

Brotherhood Of Man sounding just like Brotherhood Of Man

The BBC World Cup theme composed by Ander Lloyd-Webber (who had recently written Evita) and performed by Rod Argent - aka Rodrigo Argentino!. I remember it well! Those late nights watching the 11.00 kick-offs being thankful I didn’t have an A-Level exam the following morning. My dad said it sounded like Sylvia’s Mother so I did a rather crude mash-up which showed he was right.

Thin Lizzy sounding like Thin Lizzy.

Bob Marley - not his greatest work but still many times better than Heatwave or Motherhood Of Bran.

Another dull David Soul ballad to finish.

Week two for John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John. There’s still a long way to go.

No programme next week because of the Cardiff Singer of the World.

That Black Sabbath track sounded rather tame compared to their usual standards, whilst that Whitesnake song had an almost boogie-woogie feel to it, a million miles away from the mid 80s hair metal image of the band, complete with ladies cavorting on overpriced cars.

I also see that Blue Oyster Cult have started their climb up the chart with "Don't Fear the Reaper". Did they get to perform on TOTP, or were they judged not to have enough cowbell?

I can't remember whether BOC were on or not. Of course, even if they were on, it could have been in one of the programmes that won't be shown :(
According to DS posters, the No.1 this week was originally accompanied by a Grease film clip but looks like the BBC don't want to pay the fees that they'd owe to Paramount so are substituting the Legs & Co. routine. Same will happen with Summer Nights, Grease, Sandy and Hopelessly Devoted To You. Next year will prove a problem with Bright Eyes from 1979 as there's no other clip except the one from Watership Down.
They have had the same problem with some of the earlier programmes so they just cut the song but they couldn't really do that with the number one. The BBC have to make hefty cuts and at least this has no significant impact.

so begs the question - if the BBC are happy to chop out songs as originally broadcast, and happy to chop out DJ's introducing tracks they chop out in shorter versions, why is there such a problem with chopping out JS & DLT and just show the missing episodes minus DJ's....

Logic?

Logic?

I made the same point several months ago. It shouldn't be too difficult (or costly) to cut the DJ's waffle and replace it with captions or a voiceover.

Good show this week. I'm guessing that that was probably Whitesnakes first UK tv appearance.

Trivia question. Name the chart hitting drummer that has been in both Whitesnake and Black Sabbath?

They were featured on two editions of Top Of The Pops, the 15/06/78 edition where the song was the playout song over the credits and then on 29/06/78 when a video was played. Unfortunately the 15/06/78 edition was hosted by Jimmy Savile and the 29/06/78 edition was hosted by DLT...

I dare say we'll be able to see those shows somewhere.

On the point of editing out Presenters. Where as it might work now. It won't later, as the chart was later read out by the presenter in the show was it not?

Think they need to get some balls & show them anyway. A late night 2am slot, shouldn't get complaints on a low key channel like BBC4. Plus what DLT has actually done is nothing compared to others & the Savile (well) that's just a bunch of people, with little actual evidence against a dead bloke, who can never be tried. And on some channels they show Hitler every night & various other dangerous dead criminals. Thne there's adverts, where a young office girl goes off with a balding actor (that resembles Gary Glitter). Double Standards? I think so & Sky TV too!

And with Mark Williams Thomas about to make another thrown together programme, trying to pull Top Of The Pops apart. It's likely to be taken off altogether & I dare say it'll disappear from the Christmas schedules forever, as an air-brained ex-detective tries to make some more money to aid himself, in his pauper ex-dick pension. A man that should also be taken in, as all he really wants is money. He don't care about anyone, really. Would he be interested in child protection, if he weren't getting paid for it? I doubt it. Don't see him giving to any charity or raising money for any neither.

Late post from me on this this week, been busy!

Thanks for the AC/DC answers, I myself have access to two of thier albums, Highway To Hell and Back In Black, good heavy metal stuff. And yes, they kind of evolved from The Easybeats, who had George Young, a brother of Angus and Malcolm, in their ranks. George would later produce AC/DC albums, and was indeed heavily involved with Flash And The Pan.

Liked this week's show, had variety with MOR from David Soul and Brotherhood of Man, commercial singalong disco with John T and ONJ, soul from heatwave, reggie from Marley, heavy rock from Black Sabbath and Whitesnake, more mellow rock from Thin Lizzy, and an instrumental penned by Lord Webber. I liked Dancing In The City as well, I was reasonably pleased with this week's show.

Fiesta, my answer, off the cuff, would be Cozy Powell to your question.

Interesting debate as well, and thanks again to Dave Taylor for the links.

Would love to hear Blue Oyster Cult on one of these shows, simply fantastic record. Should really have been a bigger hit.

Basically I agree with all the points made, there are programmes that show Hitler and other villains, indeed, didn't Eastenders have a real life murderer in their cast at one stage (Leslie Grantham). I would have thought that giving heavy exposure to a real life killer would be far worse than broadcasting an old 30 minute programme presented by Savile or Travis!

Trivia question for this week relates to the king of reggae, as many Marley hits as possible, and the title of his posthumus, multi million selling compilation album, still one of the best selling compilation albums ever released.

All the best,

Ah Legend, Waiting In vain, No Woma No Cry, Buffalo Soldier, donuts wi Jammin', Three Little Birds, Iron Lion Zion...there are others but I won't hog them. Including my fave a remixed 90's hit, see if anyone gets that one..

I agree about Leslie Grantham, while I heard some comments at the time that he had served his sentence and we should forgive former criminals, I dont see anyone using that as an argument to play gary Glitter records, and whatever DLT did or didnt do (yet to be determined) at least he didn't shoot someone point blank in the head for a bit of cash. Call me judgemental, but I think that's good enough to disqualify someone from a career on TV ....

There is a bit of a clique in TV & Radio. Always has. The I know someone, who could do this job or i'm related to someone already employed by that company, or in the media.

Leslie Grantham's walk into tv came, as he was a chum of Louise Jameson (Dr Who's Leela at the time). She constantly visited him in Jail (where he used to take drama classes). Later Louise goes to some other pal (BBC Chief) & he's given various acting roles, before the big one in Eastenders....Amazingly everybody knew about his crime, but still watched him in this awful programme, every week. Commisioned by Michael Grade, that thought nothing of axing many a comedy & other popular shows (including Dr Who) to plough money into a soap, far to expensive to make. And then there was another Grsde clique in operation...A mate of "Eat" enders writers & production crew. I always hated working where cliques ruled the roost. People that always stick up for each other, not worrying whether criminal activities had taken place. Pay offs to keep people quiet, everyone up each others arses. How can you work like that? Awful.

Interesting stuff. In other words the BBC is just like everywhere else, not what you know its who you know. Your comments apply exactly to the upper echelons of local councillors and big knobs running local gov. If you dont toe the line they get rid of you and block the truth with non-disclosure cash deals or character-destroying accusations, depending on how lucky you feel about taking on a big organisation....

I suppose there's a modicum of re-assurance in Grantham eventually getting caught in a role he preferred not be so public and Grade's attempt to kill of Doctor Who only allowed it to come back stronger than ever and a major cash cow for the BBC. Though the gentleman in question seems keen to take the credit for that, as if it was his attention all along. As if!

No comments from anyone yet...awww!

How strong was this weeks show? It was SO good they had to chop Andrew Lloyd Webber out (and showaddywaddy) for the shortened version. Clout (Russ Ballard song, I think), Justin Hayward (saw him in concert last week with the Moody's, minus this Jeff Wayne classic), City Boy (future Maisonette included), ELO cowboys, Marshall-Hain and more. Great pop songs all.
