June 17, 201114 yr Author For me too, it depends on the artist. If they are new, it can take 2 or 3 singles before I'll consider buying the album. If they are someone I like, 1 is usually enough. If they are one of my absolute fav artists though, e.g. Kylie, Katie Melua, I will buy the album regardless.
June 17, 201114 yr I'd say a perfect amount of singles off one album is FOUR. However it really depends about the quality of the album and if there is infact more then 4 hits off the one album then more should be released! Also i dont mind deluxe editions, there seems to be some hate towards them saying 'oh they are just to make more money and exploit fans' but i really dont think thats true, a deluxe is to just boost sales and appeal to more people to buy the album, its just more promotion for an already successful album. :)
June 17, 201114 yr Before album release - 1 Total releases from an album - 3 maximum Kath yeah, agree with you completely Kath
June 17, 201114 yr I would say 5 singles per album, but it totally depends on the album and the quality of the material. 6 is pushing it but after that point it seems pointless as the single won't do well and by that point, the people who have bought the singles probably wouldn't get the album as they have already got all the best stuff. The bare minimum amount of singles should be 3. If you don't have at least 3 single worthy songs then an album really should not be put out.
June 17, 201114 yr I voted for "Don't mind how many" although there should have been another category "should be album and artist specific". It is impossible to say that 3 songs should be released from every single album, just as it is impossible to set that number at 1, 2, 4, 5 or any other number. The number will vary across artist, genre and album, not to mention current selling trends and god knows what else (e.g. specific live performances - ref Adele @ the Brit Awards). Silly poll as it is impossible to generalise across all the variables I have mentioned.
June 17, 201114 yr As a rule, I'd say 4 singles but it depends on how many tracks feature on the album and of course if the album is re-released, then that may warrant more releases.

June 17, 201114 yr I think the rate of Tinie Tempah singles was just fantastic - he had 3 releases before the album (4 inc. Miami 2 Ibiza). The third, [WITS] was released a week before the album - putting both the single and the album at a good advantage of reaching #1; with the result being 2 #1s, a #2 and a #1 album. However, the real masters of release are JLS. The first single in the summer = #1. Then second single, most likely performed on X-Factor = #1. Then the album is released the week after = #1. Third single released February/March time where it reaches top 10 without much effort at all. Then they move on to the next album.

Apart from the part where they're idiots and release the week after Take That and fail to get #1 with Outta This World :D But yeah, JLS have been marketed pretty much perfectly. We'll see if cracks are starting to show in their release strategy if She Makes Me Wanna fails to get to #1 but so far barring the slightly unfortunate timing of OTW everything has gone smoothly.
June 17, 201114 yr depends on the artist... usually debut artists release 4 or 5 singles from their first album and then start to release less... back in the 80's and 90's, it was very common to release 7 or 8 singles from one album : Michael, Janet, Whitney to name but a few, then in the download era, artists started to limit their output to 3 singles sometimes even 2. Only very famous artists, Gaga, Rihanna, Katy, manage to release more than 3 singles from 1 album nowadays. I prefer the 6 singles from one album, it makes the album more worthwile.

You can't rely on this strategy forever, of course : if your music doesn't evolve, people will gradually get bored of it - and if your looks are a major part of your selling point, as with JLS, you are even more succeptable to changes in the market.
June 18, 201114 yr 4-5 personally It bugs me when the likes of JLS only do 3. I mean in just 3 years, they only have 6 songs to their name. Oh and seventh on the way. That's poor really. That's only a quarter of what a standard greatest hits hold.
June 18, 201114 yr I would also say 4-5, that's about average and not over kill nor not enough, I think it's pointless when some artist release an album, it might not start off well in sales then decide to abandoned the era after only releasing two or three songs from it, then go straight on to the next album, lots of artists have done this, like David John has said and it's annoying if some songs deserve the single treatment but never get released. I think most artist's should make the most of their albums, give the causal buyers a proper sample of their music because not everyone other then the fans buy albums, sometimes you might hear and like about 4 songs from an artist and that might prompt you to actually buy the artist album, most CD albums have an average of 11+ songs, so why not release half/quarter of it.
