I'm waffling now but the point is it's perfectly possible for someone to think the "worst #1 ever" is something from 2011 without being seen as hyperbolic

But that label seems to get applied to more #1s than not recently and it always seems to be from the same people. I disagree with people branding a song the 'worst #1 ever' within days of it getting there as a rule, but those same people applying that to a different song just a few weeks later just seems ridiculous. I personally thought Jason was the third worst #1 of the year but just a couple of listens later it's up to 4th worst #1 of the year. Not a great example but still.

Again, I have absolutely no problem with people thinking the worst #1 of all-time is a song from 2011.

Infact, I myself have said on here that 2011 is the worst year for chart music that I can remember, and I've also said like 20 times in the iTunes thread that I don't like this new Jason Derulo song.

However, when the same people say it about like every other #1, it just doesn't mean anything to me anymore.

When someone says The Time is the worst song they've ever heard, then a few weeks later say the same about We R Who We R, then a few weeks later say the same about Party Rock Anthem, I just laugh tbh. I know in a few weeks they'll have completely forgotten about this so-called "worst #1 ever" and say the same about the next dance-pop song with rapping on by and American artist that comes along and gets #1.

Yeah, but most of the recent #1s are in the same "clubby urban" style. It comes down to genre again. Before the last couple of years there were almost none of those types of songs getting to #1 and now there's suddenly an influx of them. So if you really hate that kind of style of music then the current stream of #1s must be torture.

And why shouldn't people already think Jason Derulo is a bad #1? The song has been around for what, two months now? That's plenty of time to make up your opinion of it (unless you're like me and avoid TV and radio like the plague and thus haven't or have barely heard it )... I don't really see your point there, it's not like it only just got released the day before it hit #1.

I don't think it's being said by the same people either. Where's the evidence of this? Admittedly I don't use this forum as much as others but I certainly have noticed different people complaining about different songs, which is kind of what you'd expect on a forum like this. I mean, I'm pretty sure even I posted in this thread expressing my disgust at Nicole Scherzinger getting to #1 that week (although I didn't say it was "the worst #1 ever" admittedly).

What I tend to do is just say "Worst #1 of the year" (for me this year it's Grenade atm). I can easily keep track of what my favourite and least favourite songs in the space of a year are, and it actually means something then.

I realise the genre means some people are going to really dislike the #1s at the moment and I completely understand that (although I don't agree) - that's not what I was complaining about. I was complaining that people seem to overuse the phrase 'the worst #1 ever' or 'the worst #1 of the last ten years' or 'the worst song of the year' etc. and it seems one of these tags gets applied to almost every #1 this year.

And again, I don't care if people think Jason is a bad #1, but it's a little too early to be calling it 'the worst #1 of the last ten years' surely. I can't imagine russt68 as someone who would have heard DWGH 2 months ago anyway.

It might not be the same people, I admit. But it certainly *feels* like it's the same people. I seem to recall russt68 saying Give Me Everything 'might be the worst #1 ever'? (Correct me if I'm wrong)

I find it quite feasible for someone to think that 'The Time' is the worst number one in ages / ever, and I think it's equally feasible that someone who thinks that strongly about such a song would find the likes of 'Give Me Everything', 'Party Rock Anthem' and 'Don't Want To Go Home' equally, if not more, worse.

Of course it's feasible. It's equally feasible that Someone Like You is the worst #1 ever, or that Price Tag is, or Grenade, or What's My Name?

But you can't think all of those are the worst #1 ever. That's impossible, surely? Only one of them can be the worst.

Well of course you could. If you thought The Time was the worst number one ever then you disliked LMFAO more you'd then think that was, then if you thought Pitbull was worse again and so on...

It wasn't me who mentioned Give Me Everything, or about LMFAO.... however, yes, it was me who said The Time was one of the worst samples and singles in recent years - something I stand by now more than ever - because it IS a truly terrible record.

Black Eyed Peas are laughable enough, anyway (and I've seen them live - even worse)... but to sample something from Dirty Dancing is not only desperate, cheap, nasty and obvious.... it's also downright naff naff naff. Something BEP seem to be quite often (My Humps is my 3rd worst single of the past 10 years.. and let's be honest - that song is clearly indefensible).

Derulo has released a string of crap singles - none of them as awful as the Banan Boat Song-sampling new one. Just because it's been out 2 weeks, months or years - it's a record that Radio 1 are playing to death..... I've heard it quite enough thank you - quite enough to be able to state, without a doubt, it's my least favourite single to hit number one in 10 years - I follow the charts, always have done, so I think I'm qualified to state this, whether it be now or at the end of the year.

The record stinks like a tramps gusset in a heatwave.
