Posted July 22, 201113 yr Atleast 30 people have been killed in two terror attacks in Norway - a bomb near the office of the Labour Prime Minister, and a shooting rampage at a Labour Party Youth camp. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-14256712 It seems initial suspicions that this was an Islamic terrorist attack were wrong, because the person who did it is apparently Norwegian and typically Nordic-looking. My suspicion is that it's just some insane loner who was thrown out of the Labour Youth wing (for being too radical/far-left maybe?) and wanted to get "revenge". I find it hard to believe it was a politically-motivated attack from some far-right group - it has the air of a personal grudge to me.
July 23, 201113 yr I hadn't thought of that, I guess that's quite possible - though I heard that he apparently had links to far-right organizations, so I still think it might be that. However the fact it was originally thought to be an Islamic terrorist attack shows that it probably isn't best to make any judgements so soon.
July 23, 201113 yr It certainly looks like the initial assumptions by some people that it was an Islamist attack were wrong. A far right link still seems more plausible to me.
July 23, 201113 yr Author Sky News and the Daily Mail are both claiming they know who it is, and that he has links to Christian nationalist groups. I'm kind of reluctant to post his name/picture here tbh, in case it turns out he's completely unconnected, but the info's out there for anyone who wants to look (for now).
July 23, 201113 yr Sky News have named someone but the BBC haven't. It's probably better not to post a name.
July 23, 201113 yr Author Even though it looks like I was wrong in my theory in the OP, I still find it weird. If this guy is some far-right anti-immigrant nutter, wouldn't it have made more sense to target an area with a lot of Muslims living there? (Though admittedly, those would probably be hard to find in Norway.) Shooting young members of a political party just seems like a strange way to make a political statement, even by a crazy person's logic.
July 23, 201113 yr Horrible stuff. Reading all those witness reports from people, who were on Utøya at the time of shooting, reminded me of a movie with a killer on an island. :(
July 23, 201113 yr 91 people dead. It's really shocking seeing al the footage of Oslo, after the bombing, and like Pavel said, reading the witness reports :( Found this video, it really shows how big the bombing was. It's a miracle only seven people were killed there :o http://www.zie.nl/video/terreur-noorwegen/...lo/m1ezr7uf1mfl
July 23, 201113 yr Just seen on Facebook that some friends of a friend were near the explosion. Thankfully they are OK but some of their friends were injured in the shooting. Dreadful news this morning.
July 23, 201113 yr Looks like scenes from New York 9/11 :( The guy who shoot the children on Utøya is apperently far-right radical, he had posted really disgraceful things on twitter and facebook. They have also arrested another guy just an hour ago or something. We don't know much about this new guy, but he had a knife and was in the same area as the PM. 84 people have been confirmed dead in Utøya, and 7 in Oslo. They are expecting that number of deaths will rise at Utøya :( For a little ago I was driving to the store, and there was alot of people who are flagging at half mast, there is a really weird atmosphere in Norway now, all the norwegians channels have been broadcasting from the attacks since 6pm yesterday.
July 23, 201113 yr The gunman is said to be linked to Fremskrittspartiet (the Progress Party), the second-largest party in the Storting. And there have also been reports that some government members are among the dead, but that has yet to be confirmed.

The scenes seem shocking enough from over here. I can't begin to imagine what Norwegians are going through. :( Good to see your Foreign Minister saying that Norwegian values will not change.

I can't begin to imagine what Norwegians are going through. :( Good to see your Foreign Minister saying that Norwegian values will not change. I agree with this. Norway is an amazing place and they will no doubt stick to their values. I still can't believe it happened in Norway out of all countries. I'm more shocked about the scale rather than the actual [suspected] motive. Scandinavia has always had a large underground far-right following, and it was only a matter of time that it raised it's ugly head. It's why Norway is the way it is. Nazi occupation is still a sensitive topic there, and it's also why they didn't stay neutral and joined NATO, and it's why they're so open and liberal. It just fuels the far-right. It was going to happen sooner or later, unfortunately. :(
July 23, 201113 yr Thankfully one of my best school friends who lives there are OK. Although it's still a very upsetting disturbance. My thoughts and prayers go out to the friends and relatives of the victims :(

Shooting young members of a political party just seems like a strange way to make a political statement, even by a crazy person's logic. First of all, hello to you all! :) If the info that's coming through proves to be correct, I think I can see his rationale. In his mind, it was all (to use a typical liberal-baiting American conservative expression) the lefties fault. The way he saw it, the fact that foreigneirs, non-Christians and basically everything typically non-Norwegian was entering his country was all due to the Left's policies. Bottom line: he was a man driven by hatred borne out of frustration of some kind. I mean, he was a suburban, middle class man in his mid-to-late 30's "still living in his momma's basement" (another typical American expression here). He was obviously someone with antisocial issues. And as we all know, nutcases aren't exclusive to any social class, nationality, race, religion or political affiliation.
July 23, 201113 yr NRK just ended it's news program for today, now they are showing pictures from Oslo where people have started to lay down flowers and light candles Reminds me of when Diana died
