I could post a very long list of #1s I hate, but one that sticks out that I can't stand is the 2009 Christmas #1, 'Killing In The Name'.

I totally forgot about that, tbh it wins hands down - not only it is a screaming mess but the terms it got to number 1 on were unfair. I mean a campaign to stop someone getting number 1? How pathetic, surely it's not that bad for a song to get to number 1... I care about the chart, but if I don't like the number 1 I'm not gonna make a campaign to de-rail it. I get that the group wanted to curb Cowell's reign on the chart but I just think it was a really stupid idea, The Climb got number 1 the week after anyway and it just meant XF fans were in full force the year after and When We Collide got number 1 with total ease.

39 posts before anyone mentioned Westlife (if I didn't miss anything) is pretty remarkable thing here

If the prize would still be open after all those horrendous covers of 21st century, then I'd choose Stevie Wonder's I Just Called to Say I Love You or Ebony and Ivory, the duet with McCartney. What a horrible songs from such a great artist.

As a general rule, a number one is terrible if it is:-

- by Gareth Gates

- by Westlife

- a Charity song

- an X-Factor song

- by Robson and/or Jerome

- a dodgy cover version (which more or less means all the above, plus a few other one-offs as well)

Purely my opinion of course........ :teresa:

Leaving aside all novelty songs and anything related to X Factor, among the worst of the worst are

Anita Ward - Ring My Bell (1979)

All Saints - Lady Marmalade

Christina Aguilera et al - Lady Marmalade

Wet Wet Wet - Love Is All Around

Bryan Adams - Everything I Do

The last two were dreadful before they got to number one. Their longevity once they got there just added insult to injury.

Completely agree with the Stevie Wonder song. He's a marvellous artist but that is an atrocious song.

C'est la vie, Saturday Night, Mmmbop, Babycakes and The Club is Alive are the worst 5. I'm surprised songs like barbie girl, it wasn't me and any robson and jerome song havn't been mentioned!

Judging by the 'when did you start following the charts' thread, a lot of Buzzjack posters are (fortunately) too young to remember them. :P

Well, I voted 2008/2009 in that poll, but I remember Barbie Girl very vividly (probably one of the most memorable songs from my childhood). I was probably the perfect age for it, when it came out tbh. Young enough to genuinely enjoy the song, and not notice all the innuendo in it.

I don't really see why people are saying stuff that's aimed for kids. It would surely be far more weird if people who's age is in double figures do/did like Teletubbies and Mr Blobby. The same with most novelty number ones like 'It's Chico Time' or 'Crazy Frog'. They were made for a specific audience and were fine for that.

There have been many truly dreadful number ones since I've been listening to music, but the one that makes me heave most is 'I Wish I Was A Punk Rocker'.

Following close behind include 'Babycakes', 'Crossroads', 'Against All Odds' (Mariah/Westlife or Steve), 'Don't Wanna Go Home' and 'The Time (Dirty Bit)'

How could I have forgotten 'The Time' by B.E.Ps?

And I saw that on Graham norton where Example said Longevity was more important than getting #1. I mean, look at Diava Vickers...

I think sales are more important than longevity though. Like being in the top 200 for 6 months, and only selling 150,000 vs. being in the top 200 for 2 months, and selling 500,000.

Longevity might be more important than a high peak, but getting a high peak and good sales is better than a low peak and being around for ages, imo.

I know this is quite frankly a dangerous opinion to make on Buzzjack, but the worst number 1 for me since I started listening to the charts in 2009, and ignoring all novelty, x factor, and charity singles, the worst for me has to be...

Adele - Someone Like You

I just find it tediously dull, and I was watching her performance at the BRITS on TV, so I still don't get all the hype about it. What's worse is that I don't know a single person who doesn't like it!

3 Of A Kind - Babycakes

Basshunter - Now You're Gone

Cliff Richard - The Millennium Prayer

Crazy Frog - Axel F

Deep Blue Something - Breakfast At Tiffany's

Five + Queen - We Will Rock You (although I love Five in general, but this was truly woeful)

Limp Bizkit - Rollin'

Nick Berry - Every Loser Wins

Puff Daddy & Faith Evans - I'll Be Missing You

Room 5 featuring Oliver Chetham - Make Luv

Spacedust - Gym & Tonic

St Winifred's School Choir - There's No-one Quite Like Grandma

These ones stand out as particularly awful...

What a terrific list! Apart from Deep Blue Something and perhaps Basshunter (which I liked for about a fortnight) what an absolutely DIRE collection of songs. I too quite liked Five (and I wasn't one to like pop music at that age) but that version is even more hideous than the original, and I hate Queen, which reminds me.... 'Bohemian Rhapsody' is definitely up there.

Good Gosh, so many to choose from;

BEP - "I got a feeling" and "boom boom pow"

All X-Factor winner singles bar Leona and Shayne's efforts.

The X-Factor rapes for "charity" 2008-10.

JLS's singles.

Jason Derulo's latest effort.

anything by Robson and Jerome and Beautiful Girls by Sean Kingston would also contend, oddly enough I never really detest the novelty/XF/reality show number 1s, tacky but not bad as such, bar a few exceptions like Hero :puke:
I usually love the reality show winners singles, especially Hallelujah and A Moment Like This!

Oh, I don't expect many people/anybody to agree with me on Deep Blue Something. It's just one of those songs I find irritating as hell!! :arrr:

Just realised two that I forgot - Eric Prydz's Call On Me (how could I forget this?!) and Jennifer Lopez's Get Right (probably another one most people won't agree with me, but to me it's just incredibly irritating again with that horn loop) deserve a mention. Very little pre-1996 offends me that much to be honest, probably because I didn't follow the charts at the time and didn't hear them all over the radio.

With those kind of songs, it's more the principle of them getting to #1 that's annoying more than the song IMO. Because you know they won't be remembered and keep off songs that are actually genuinely popular, etc, rather than just selling off the back of charity or whatever, or might go on to be actual classics. Robson & Jerome are boring at worst, it's just annoying they kept off Wonderwall and Common People for example.

As for Westlife, it was more their tactics they used to get #1 that pissed a lot of people off. Plus it was scary watching them come dangerously close to getting the all-time #1 record. Thank God it looks like they have no chance of getting any more now (plus Elvis' re-issues thankfully raised the bar much higher than it was beforehand)...
