I took a look at the line-up and most of the song were actually obscure for me this time, apart from Coconut Tree, Moves Like Jagger and Glad You Came!

BTW Fervorosia being one of the BJSC countries also participates in NSC, as I've noticed!

Oh right, I wonder why Greenfroze declined? :o Exactly how many BJSC countries/participants are currently in NSC by the way?

That's actually really good on first listen, I think it could have done well here too! I always though Belle & Sebastian were an indie act, I didn't expect this at all when I clicked onto the song! 9th and close to DNQ'ing? How does that work, do quite a few people auto-qualify each month on NSC or do you just have tiny finals?

That's the Richard X remix of it. The album version is much more mellow

Belle and Sebastian

I quite like that Richard X remix, not heard it before but it makes it sound like Saint Etienne

Actually Fervorosia participated in NSC long before they participated in BJSC. So it's the other way around.

Admittedly, it's not just 'cheap songs' that put me off considering participating in NSC, but it's definitely a part of it, I would have almost certainly quit BJSC had the new mod veto rules not come in, it really was all getting a bit pointless at times. I've always thought that these things should be about discovering and sharing new music more than anything else. I just cannot fathom why anybody would want to waste an opportunity to introduce 50 odd people to something new or obscure that they love by wasting it sending the latest A-list hot leak that everyone already knows. And then to see something like that triumph was always incredibly annoying.

But I reckon I'd be completely out of sync with the general tastes over there. I often search the NSC wiki in search of potential BJSC entries, or just decent new songs, and I very rarely enjoy the winners or immediate runners up - either they're not from my sort of genre (e.g. gothic rock or metal) or I just can't hear a hook. And then I listen to all of the DNQ's and find that I like pretty much all of those! I still shudder from how badly Robots In Love did over there :drama:

Not everyone has the same scope of what they see the contest as though. Some just want to enter songs they love, plain and simple...even if that song is a mega hit. :P

From my experience of NSC (45 editions, I'm OLD :drama:) I would definitely argue there is a lot of opportunity for new discoveries in NSC. Whether those discoveries are to your tastes is another thing altogether. I think NSC suits my tastes slightly better than BJSC does really (although it alternates, sometimes I'll be more interested in an edition of BJSC than NSC and vice versa)...but it's not so much of a gap that I don't make great discoveries here either. I guess I'm lucky to be somewhere between BJSC & NSC taste wise.

I usually think a good rule of thumb is if it DNQs in NSC, send it to BJSC.

Even if you wanted to enter, the waiting list at the moment is awfully long (23 people are waiting to get in) so you could be waiting a while to be a full member....

I'd noticed that, which was my third reason for not thinking about entering  Insanely popular contest! How does one get in by the way, only when somebody else leaves or are there alternating people sitting out each month?

Only when somebody on the current member list has missed 3 contests in a row, they get removed and WL country takes their place. The problem is none of the 60 current members miss 3 contests in a row very often. So it's a bit of a slog.....it wasn't always like this though.

I remember I sent in my application during NSC 23 and I was put on the waiting list but was able to participate in the next contest NSC 24.

There's also a system in place to make sure the actively participating waiting listers are at the top of the list for entry into the main contest. It's required for nations on the WL to vote in a Waiting List jury for the final. (all their votes are grouped together into one set of eurovision style votes.)

If a WL nation fails to vote they move down the waiting list by 2 places. (and so people that are taking part move up, even if they submitted their application a while after a WL country that failed to vote)

WL nations also have a mini contest they can take part in each month called WLSC.

Sounds quite complex but like a fair way of doing things!

I can imagine that it gets a bit busy when the voting periods of both contests clash, you must have near to 100 new songs to listen to in about a week  Do you still take part in the VESC also?

No, I don't take part in VESC any more. I think my friend Mattias (Deandria) still takes part in it though. Partly because I lost interest in the contest itself but also because it was a bit of a strain worrying about three contests at once. Especially since VESC is probably bigger now than it was when I first took part.

I'm able to manage two contests alright....but any more than that is a bit dodgy.

Sisse Marie - Dirty Hands was in NSC 71 actually. It failed to qualify (it came 14th out of 25) It was around 10 points away from qualifying though.

I somehow have a feeling that I wouldn't do any better with my NSC DNQ entries if I sent them here, though. :kink:

So some things about the two contests are exactly the same at least!

Maybe :kink:

The craziest thing I've done lately is try to participate in BJSC 36 while I'm hosting NSC.

Big mistake. :S Still I managed to get my votes in anyway.

I'm glad you did though. Late Night Alumni is beautiful

Oh right, I wonder why Greenfroze declined? :o Exactly how many BJSC countries/participants are currently in NSC by the way?

For the whole of July I was away visiting/living with a good friend of mine. Sort of practicing before eventually living together. I had to prioritise that + I wouldn't have had the time to host a contest like NSC. Also I don't think I could host that contest as good as everyone else have done. I didn't want to ruin anything :P

Just had a quick peek.

Philter won for Greenfroze :o

I know, I never would've thought that really. Philter winning is quite unique

Oh :o That's another song that could easily do well in BJSC I think!

I considered sending it here, but I figured UP was more of an appropriote contest to send it. And because of that I can't send it to BJSC now as that would be overkill.

For all it's "cheap" songs, I don't think it's fair to just rubbish NSC based on that. It's much more unpredictable....but the diverse range of music styles makes it very rewarding too. I've found songs there I love that never in a million years would I have discovered otherwise. Usually good (unknown) does prevail over evil (cheap) :P at least in terms of winners. I think in a way, because NSC tastes are so diverse....a song from Lady Gaga might not really be that cheap. Judas failed to qualify a few contests back.

I agree. And cheap songs can fail to qualify in NSC (Lady Gaga, Rihanna) and highly inspired songs like Philter can win it

Yeah and let's not forget about KaraMel and Zowie. Both failed to qualify :nocheer: :(

Not everyone has the same scope of what they see the contest as though. Some just want to enter songs they love, plain and simple...even if that song is a mega hit. :P

That can be justified a bit if they haven't had the time to look for a bit more unknown music one month or so, but when they keep sending cheap and uninspired stuff then that's just lazy imo. They even value discoveries themselves, so why not give other people some discoveries too? That doesn't make sense <_<

I feel the same way. Although the opposite of you I feel BJSC suits my tastes slightly better, I enjoy participating in both contests and there are a wide range of songs I can only send to NSC and by looking at KaraMel and Zowie apparantly the other way around as well :drama: :P

So some things about the two contests are exactly the same at least!

Maybe :kink:

I really don't know what I'll do if Sisse misses the top 10 - it's unprecedented for me to go three contests outside the top ten, and as I'm depending on something leaking in time that could easily get stretched to four!
