I agree with everything this report says... Obama is as big a sell-out as Nick Clegg, and now millions of Americans will suffer even more from the $4 trillion in cuts.... What a crock of shit.....

American politics is basically the difference between being f**ked and being raped.... The Republicans may f*** you, but at least you know what you're getting into, the "Democrats" have been raping their voters since 2008 with sh"t I doubt ANY Democrat voter consented to, including this..... Which is why I say Obama = Clegg....

Yes, it's terrible, but there wasn't much he COULD do given it was all but electorally impossible to get past the Tea Party's numbers in Congress and have tax rises as a part of the deal (whereas Clegg quite definitely did have another choice) - it's more a deal that came as a result of a broken political system. Would you rather the US defaulted and the world was plunged into another recession?

Yeah, like that wont happen anyway, the US has, in reality, already defaulted... This is delaying the inevitable if you ask me... Frankly, I'd be interested in seeing what would happen if the US defaulted officially.... And dont try to defend Obama, he put stuff on the table that the Republicans weren't even asking for... He's actually made more Austerity cuts than a Republican would.... If I was an American right now, I'd be seriously considering joining a Militia group and plotting revolution.....

The more I hear by Cenk Uygur on Obama the more right I think he is....

When Obama is pressurised by the Right, he basically crumbles and caves in, which is why the Left/Progressives need to quit being afraid to criticise him and seriously turn the screws on Obama....

From what I saw in America, a lot of the left TV have been criticizing Obama for many months now, so either they aren't convincing enough or Obama has just been ignoring them. I've heard that there might be a chance that he might not even get the re-nomination from the Democratic Primaries (which I believe would be unprecendented in modern American politics). The Republicans don't have a strong enough candidate to defeat Obama though, so I can still see Obama getting another term (providing he's not stabbed in the back of course)

Well, that's the thing really - there isn't anywhere near enough pressure on Obama from the left. What was it that FDR said to his assistant? 'I have the policies to sort out this country in place - I need you to go out there and get the public pressure for them' - that's what's lacking in America at the moment. The Tea Party have completely dominated the country's discourse and as such Obama's virtually powerless (in electoral and public demand calculations) to push for a fairer deal.

Of course, default is all but inevitable given the US economy's flatlining and they're taking $4tn out of it, but at least it's been postponed for a couple of years...

You cant compare Obama to FDR, it's like comparing a boy to a man... FDR had the guts to do what needed to be done in the 1930s, Obama is totally in the pockets of Wall Street. It's not even really about Democrats V Republicans anymore if we're being totally honest, as BOTH parties seem to be completely sucking the dicks and balls of the Fed, Wall Street, Goldman Sachs, Jamie Diamond, Ben Bernanke, Warren Blankstein, and all the other crooked banker scum that FDR would've thrown in jail in the 1930s.....

But, Max Keiser lays it out far better than I ever could....

I personally hope the left DOES stab him in the back, for the good of the country as well as the Democratic party, like the Roman Senate literally stabbed Julius Caeser for the good of Rome..... Obama's a joke and a Corporate "Yes Man"... Besides, it needs more than TV commentators to criticise him, it needs the progressives in his own party to stop being wimps and actually oppose the man... He's done more U-turns than a Hollywood stunt-driver, on the wars, on the banks, on civil liberties, on the economy, and now this.... You'd may as well vote f**king Republican, because Obama eventually just kowtows to the Republicans anyway, cut out the middle-man.....

Very pleased that a deal has finally been reached. Obama should be congratulated. Second term looms I hope.

I agree what else could Obama have done, it is both simplistic and ridiculous to think that Obama could have held out until the bitter end.If he had waited to impose the 14th amendment the Republicans and Tea party would have had him in court or impeached him.The Left have nothing that is the equivalent of the Tea Party they are happy to bitch now but where were their voices when this rubbish was going on-mostly silent. The rich backers of the Tea Party are not stupid they are using poor, foolish and badly educated people to do there dirty work and theyare too dumb to see it.How can a poor person work so hard to get a rich person to pay less tax and still use tax loopholes. We know what the end game of the Tea party is to destroy Obama and the Left need to grow up and meet them head on but they have not been forceful enough either.Fox, the Druge report, Politico and the Tea party work 24/7 against Obama what is the left doing to fight back.

Obama has tried to run a bipartisan government which he needs to do to get laws and bills passed. His wrong doing is to not want to get his hands dirty and fight fire with fire.He has had an eye opener but I think he will change his policies now and have no choice but to get further left.I think he will get re-elected because the Republicans have no one who is better and the Tea party has taken them too far to the right. If you watched Obamas speech yesterday he was clearly not happy and stressed he will not let up on tax cuts, trying to stop tax loopholes and to try and stimulate the economy.

No, they're certainly not stupid - devious fascist scum, yes, but not stupid... The stupid ones are the American public for falling for their snake-oil.... Frankly I wonder sometimes if Britain should just tell the US to f**k off and throw in our lot with Russia or China...... Obama's a puppet of the Right, he'll never be the great President he promised to be.. The reason why the Progressives didn't say anything was laid out in the clips I posted, they were too scared/cowardly.... This is basically what this "deal" is - a product of cowardice.... The "Democratic" party should hang its head in shame because they've just signed the death warrant for the American working classes....

Very hard hitting and truthful look at the Tea party and Debt Ceiling from Salon.com

Today's Tea Party movement is merely the latest of a series of attacks on American democracy by the white Southern minority, which for more than two centuries has not hesitated to paralyze, sabotage or, in the case of the Civil War, destroy American democracy in order to get their way.

The Republican Party's attempted government shutdown of 1995 marked the new domination of the Republican Party by Southerners like Newt Gingrich, Dick Armey and Tom DeLay. The impeachment of their fellow Southerner Bill Clinton was an attempted coup d'état by the Southern white minority in the United States, which, as in 1860, was frustrated because its candidate lost the presidential election.

The debt ceiling crisis is the latest case in which the radical right in the South has held America hostage until its demands are met. Presidents Andrew Jackson and Abraham Lincoln refused to appease the Southern fanatics. Unfortunately, President Obama and the Democrats in Congress chose not to follow their example and instead gave in. In doing so, they have encouraged the neo-Confederate minority in Congress to find yet another opportunity in the near future to extort concessions from America's majority by sabotaging America's government.

Oh, I have no doubt that everything in this article is pretty accurate... My issue is with Obama attempting to appease them and Wall Street... After all, you wouldn't have seen a British Prime Minister attempting to appease the Nazis would you........? Oh, hang on................

the facts are that Obama has actually escalated the war in Afghanistan (witness the proliferation in Drone attacks that have killed thousands of civilians), he's committed MORE tax-payer billions to a war in Libya, he's done precisely FUKK ALL about Guantanamo Bay, or the Banks that he said were "too big to fail", and he's done a total U-turn on Mercenaries (oops, I mean, "Private Security Contractors") being deployed to Iraq....... It's almost as if Bush and Cheney never left frankly.....

There is no denying the fact that Obama is too centrist and has tried and failed to play the appeaser bringing both sides together.I think that Obama is rather in denial about how hated he is by the Tea party factions and the American right. He seems to have blinkers on that he has stirred up so much hate and that there is a racist faction that despise him.He has always been a moderate not a hard left wing activist, but I think his anger was obvious yesterday at the outcome of the Debt ceiling.I think he will take on those who are trying there hardest to bring him down and I am keeping the faith with Obama. What is the alternative Right wing, racist, southern bumpkin hicks who only watch Fox News-Bachman, Palin, Romney, Gingrinch.

And this is the whole problem with American politics right there..... Although, to be honest, I'm really beginning to side with Bill Hicks and what he said about US politics....

Also, we should listen to Alyona Minkovski a bit more, for she is wise...

The Left wing of every strand needs to accept that globally we are on the backfoot and are being shouted out, drowned out and floored by Right wing politicians and propaganda.Either we unite and become organised or from Europe to North America the Right will continue to advance. We are too timid and maybe too scared but with the knocks the Evil Empire of fascist Rupert Murdoch and Fox news is taking, now is the time to get our house in order.Obama as someone says needs to pick a side, the centre is lonely and cowardly and will lead to loosing in 2012.The Left underestimates the Tea Party because we regard them as idiots but the puppet masters pulling the strings are far better organised than any left wing organisation out there.

I think it was Keith Olbermann who basically said in no uncertain terms "pick a side" in his quite astounding editorial commentary that I embedded a few posts back..... I agree, the leftists and progressives need to get more organised.... Maybe a third party is the solution..?

Under First Past The Post, it would be almost impossible for a third party to establish themselves in the USA. The ability of the existing parties to gerrymander boundaries (after all, it was an American politician who gave his name to half of the word) makes it even more difficult.

Keith Olberman is telling it like it is in the most basic and brutally honest manner.Obama and the Democrats are pussyfooting around the issue of the Republicans surge to the extreme right. The Tea party continue to rewrite history to suit there agenda and continue to keep lying to the public and the Democrats never call them out about it.It will be a long and bitter Presidential campaign next year and I hope Obama develops some steel they will be throwing everything at him.Keeping his head above the discourse will not work.I think Americans want to see him take charge and show some backbone.I want to hope that he is currently down but not out.

This article sums it up:

Progressives took a great deal of ground during the first two years of the Obama Administration. Then the empire struck back and we have been defending that turf ever since. We cannot be deflected from preparing the most robust counter offensive in the history of American politics next November.
