IGORRR - ADHD Two months ago we sent a shitpost (lovable) J-Pop song, last month we sent a shitpost (lovable) folk-metal song, and this month it's the turn of breakcore out of my genre catalogue to g

Thanks for the kind words Iz and the kishi bashi and Ezra furman love I had hopes for both doing better so good to see them appreciated :cheer:

Love the original way you review it must take you ages to sort and research!

Speaking of the upcoming Buzzjack mountain entry, I think it has a good chance of qualifying as it's a lot better than Wasting My Life!

Especially if me, Lotti and mdh are in the same semi as it, that's at least 36 points for it there. :heehee:

Thanks popchartfreak and thanks to everyone who's commented, it's quite a bit of writing but I enjoy doing that so that's no problem for me.

Last lot.

Avalonia あふろにあ

Avalonia maintained a fairly high quality standard throughout the year. Fairly high quality, I didn’t like Burning at first but that grew on me a little, Arrow was the opposite, I really don’t like that now, it’s just far too basic a pop song. But otherwise, with the caveat that Before I Sleep is kinda only okay, that’s a lot of Avalonian entries I like. Waiting For Godot was very interestingly structured even if it took a long time to grow on me, I don’t normally resist female rock and Sono Ancora Io was certainly that, same with Lights, which really shouldn’t have DNQed. Terminate was a bit less my sort of thing but it was fairly strong for pop. The top 3 are the clear winners though, a cheeky use of Dance Of The Little Swans made me notice Symphobia (surprisingly not a symphonic metal act), of Verona are one of my old artists and Better With You was a lovely new song from them, possibly the best I’ve heard since their first album. And of course, Thomas Bergersen is proving to be a god amongst men with Merethe Soldtvedt the goddess beside him as Children Of The Sun made another huge pairing and utter life anthem to follow in Compass’ footsteps.

Ranking: Thomas Bergersen – Children Of The Sun > of Verona – Better With You > Symphobia – I Do > Silver Cities – Lights > Nicole Skye – Terminate > Deborah Iurato – Sono Ancora Io > Javina Gavankar – Waiting For Godot > Joy Williams – Before I Sleep > Carina Dahl – Burning > Philippa Hanna – Arrow

Altyr Muunilinst あるちゃむうにりんすた

Definitely diverged too far from Altyr for the second year in a row, there’s a little less to be jealous about though :P Although Hey was not really my cup of tea, and that was the main one as an entry that outpeaked me. It was a shame to see For My Sins fail as I know how much you love that but it hasn’t aged that well for me. Threshold, Wherever You Go, Closer To Life, they ended up being pretty middle-of-the-road dance for me sadly, nice enough but not Altyr’s best. Crush On You was slightly better, following up the rather great sample song of Heartbeat in the Reinvention spinoff, but then everyone ragged on that for some reason. Saara not of Aalto created a fairly lovely pop song, I was surprisingly convinced by Shaed as it initially looked to me like the pop song I watch everyone else liking but don’t like myself, it had some very nice parts to it. The best Altyr this year was clearly the alt pop Youngr though, I was slightly influenced by my brother liking it so much but it’s clearly quite a tune and has some really good synthy bits in it that even seem a bit OMFG at times.

Ranking: Youngr – Out Of My System > SHAED – Running Through The Fields > SAARA – I Do > Nick Talos – Crush On You > Atella x Froder – Closer To Life > TRXD – Wherever You Go > Redlight – Threshold > Jess Mills – For My Sins > High Contrast & Claire Maguire – Who’s Loving You > WILLA – Hey

Alteria あれてりあ

Alteria continue to prove themselves with low volume high quality entries that unfortunately don’t make an impact to everyone else. But then I think they were the only other person to enter a Japanese act this year – unless I’m forgetting something. So they definitely have that going for them. And Beautiful Life is a very lovely song. Although I haven’t seen the anime it’s associated with – that’ll be a nice bit of familiarity if I ever do, I haven’t started any new anime for a while so I’m not brimming with anime music potentials right now.

Ranking: Shiggy Jr – Beautiful Life

Aeroche あえろち

Another BJSC year, another hugely successful year for Aeroche, another year where Iz likes about ONE of those big hits and one of the surprisingly underrated flops. I always get convinced that Aeroche is going to win when I actually love their entry, but those most often end in 2nd to 4th. Anyway, it wasn’t quite that bad, Skyline and Crazy For You are not my cup of tea in the slightest, Stars was a bit basic although got better with repeated listens and while I thought I would like Ridin Round it ended up like feeling like even for that slightly weird sound, I’d heard it before and I wasn’t finding it as exciting as I’d like. Fate was not the best winner either, weird as many of my taste compatriots were falling over it but while the instrumental was fine, I wasn’t too into most of the rest of it. However, however, however, the top 5 of Aeroche are pretty great tunes – Bassnectar marked the first Aeroche DNQ where I thought it didn’t deserve to DNQ, being quite an invigorating song, I sort of wish I’d pointed it a bit now. All Over The World was a good dance anthem and it was nice to hear more from Above & Beyond. Angel sounds so much like a lost nightcore classic – although that may just be the 天使 (tenshi/angel) vibe that many nightcore classics have (e.g. Angel with a Shotgun/Angel of Darkness), and is definitely very enjoyable. However the top 2 are where Aeroche’s special touch really comes into its own for me, Tear is well, Scottish rock, the best part of Scottish music and a delightfully different for Aeroche to go into, those vocals are so brilliant. But nothing beats Hateful Love, and that’s certainly among my Aeroche classics now, from the very beginning the instrumental hooks you in and draws you in among the incredibly hostile and dissonant lyrics. The huge rave hardstyle factor works in its favour so much, it’s a style of music that I love and that far too few people in music are doing right now. That’s my vision of Aeroche success – and all forms of Aeroche success for the future please.

Ranking: Little Big – Hateful Love > Holy Esque – Tear > Polyna – Angel > Above & Beyond – All Over The World > Bassnectar – Now > Fraunhofer Diffraction – Fate > Kalis Uchis – Ridin Round > Project 46 – Stars > Zonderling – Crazy For You > Sophie Beem – Skyline

Aelandor あえらぬどる

This was my motivation to finish. Because I couldn’t do a BJSC round up without saying just how underrated I think Aelandor are and how y’all need to give them far more qualifiers next year. I guess part of that is naturally wanting them to do well so I can banter about doing better than them without feeling bad, but they really haven’t entered a bad entry yet and have not got anywhere near what they deserve for it. Nostalgia I ended up loving even though I knew it was doomed and did take a bit too long to build, Cat, entered through a one-off catalyst, was maybe not the prime way to cater to BJSC tastes from Relient K’s vast catalogue but it was very catchy and it was a catastrophe it didn’t make it through, would be up for one of their earlier catclassics eventually finding its way in via CatAelandor, not to be confused with Catalonia. Unbreakable, lovely to see Fireflight entered after I passed on Stay Close ages ago, and I thought that one would have been fine to go through too. Into Your Veins comes in the middle, a bit Cat Empire but more rocky, there’s another band Aelandor could enter, and it was a strong debut. I really really really thought Bear’s Den would be a safe qualifier, it’s a very powerful ballad and that I think is their most critically acclaimed (and if not that, it’s my personal favourite) song, at least as far as I’ve heard. That and Imperial Leisure were the two Aelandor songs I knew before Jacob decided to enter them, and Imperial Leisure comes in as my second favourite – partly influenced from seeing them live, but Man On The Street is a right ska anthem – there’s far too little ska in BJSC and it really sucked I was in the other semi and couldn’t help it, that’s another thing, the cruelties of the BJSC semis meaning I could only watch most of the time to help these. Others would say that that’s good as it’s preventing nepotism. That’s probably accurate. At least, at least, people finally managed to put something through from them, and it’s turned out to be their clear best. I mean, Pass Out should have been at least top 20 in its contest by all rights but at least it was a qualifier, that track makes you feel so beautifully alive and it’s a wonderful discovery I’ve made from them. Gushing over. The race is now on Jacob, which of us can get higher on the EOY next year?

Ranking: Soeur – Pass Out > Imperial Leisure – Man On The Street > Bear’s Den – Above The Clouds Of Pompeii > Five Iron Frenzy – Into Your Veins > Fireflight – Unbreakable > Relient K – Cat > Said The Sky – Nostalgia

#00274E ¥おおにななよんえ

I suppose one of the bigger things I’ve noticed this year in countries I don’t often support is that it is so often JakeWild. And I think that stands out to be more than most countries I don’t often point because he’s so successful and I don’t know if I’m missing anything. But there were a few entries I liked, although nothing as much as machineheart this year. Secret, I’ve said how it’s weird how it’s now the biggest K-Pop hit but it’s certainly a good one as one of the better dirtier dancey K-Pop songs (would still prefer something gorgeous and clean like Rough but I’ve gone over that), Relax, one of Jake’s better entries so I’m not going to be disparaging about this winner (as much as seeing a 90s top 40 hit winning takes some getting used to), it only narrowly didn’t get points from me and it is quite a good bop. Now Bad Boy was rather enjoyable too, I know I didn’t enjoy it as much as some, but it was certainly in contention for points. Ghost and Howl were fine pop songs too honestly. I… wasn’t particularly keen on the rest, I’ll Take You was okay once I got used to the slightly screechy vocals, the rest… not my thing. Particularly I thought Infinity Ink was one of the more wallpapery songs of the year. I wanna like your stuff Jake, it just hasn’t been the best year for me and you. Still, every country starts with a clean slate, now I’m finished with all of this.

Ranking: Yuri & Seohyun – Secret > Crystal Waters – Relax > Paul Cronin – Now Bad Boy > Tkay Maidza – Ghost > Norell – Howl > MSTR ROGERS – I’ll Take You > Hotel Garuda – Smoke Signals > Jean Tonique – Guest > Infinity Ink – How Do I Love You > Ben Delay – I Never Felt So Right

Don't go away just yet though, pretty soon (i.e. right now) following this post I'm going to post, without any fanfare, my actual top 100 of BJSC entries for this year, so you can see where all the gushing I've been doing over the best entries actually stacks up in a normal numerical order.

Top 100 2016 of Séyetana:

My top 2 are from the same contest, I really wish I'd been able to give both of them 18s but both of them have stuck with me so much ever since that they really feel like the right top 2. The rest of the top 10 is all utterly incredible too, as is all of the top 100 to be fair. I think, gathering my thoughts, all of the top 20 I think would easily make their way into being on the same quality levels as the tracks in the all-time BJSC countdown I did earlier this year, and some of them were actually there.

'Toccata' top 15 and a further 4 entries in your top 100! :cheer:

Great countdown Izzles! It has been very fun to follow.

<3 Yes!

Fantastic write-ups and what a coup to finish at No.1 on somebody's EOY chart, much love all round Iz

Yayyy for BOOTS being in your top 5 + TSRP also in the top 50

Excellent job with all of these write-ups x

The effort is incredible Iz *.* yasss @ 3 of my entries in your top 100 too!

I have to say, sometimes I find your use of the word "pop" interesting ~ it's just curious because I never really thought of songs like Noréll's 'Howl' and Tkay's 'Ghost' as "pop", or Deandria's own song 'Alchemy', which you also referred to as pop once. No need to respond btw, it just makes me think and expand my own definition of what "pop music" is or what it could be :o

('Father Hu$$la' is the one out of my songs that I find the most difficult to categorise genre-wise!)

Edit: Just noticed it was two songs of mine in top 100, not 3, one was a commiseration haha

('Father Hu$$la' is the one out of my songs that I find the most difficult to categorise genre-wise!)

As I love arguing over genres: It's not actually 'pop' that's the problem, it's 'indie' that I don't like using, and in fact, Buzzjack is the only place I've seen where it's used as liberally as it is, to define pretty much anything that isn't rap, cutesy bubblegum/Disney pop or club dance tracks. Sure, you have 'indie-pop' but that doesn't literally mean electronic subtle pop, it has to have more of a rock leaning. Basically most of the stuff that Buzzjack likes from the indie forum is actually pretty much pop music - and that's what it really is for the most part, an alternative pop forum. They have a slight indie leaning and influences from the indie scene, there's a certain type of artist that we perceive to be indie that tends to go in there, but not true indie. Tkay Maidza definitely does synthpop on Ghost even though she's often a rapper, Howl is very pop and so is Alchemy, they have different vocals from the norm but I wouldn't say that changes their genre.

Basically if a song has a standard structure, is not overtaken by huge guitar sounds or EDM beats but more full and melodic instruments, and has a big hook, then it's pop in some fashion or other - you can probably identify whether it then also draws upon the dance, the rock, the indie, or the urban world, or any other genre for that matter, but it'll be pop still.

Oh, and I'd say Father Hu$$la is some sort of noise-pop-rap.

Hurrah for four entries in your top 100, exactly as many as you had in mine I think! <3 Fantastic top 10 all in all and amazing job with the write ups as always (although I hate to be that guy, but you forgot Ajanaeda!)

Knew there'd be one! Sorry Josh!

Ajanaeda

Why was an okay cover of that famous song it was part of but not my favourite, I've just had to listen to Paradise Blue again and that's certainly a rather great pop song, all those little dreamy vocal bits, shame that didn't make it through! I may have to put that on rotation a bit.

Ranking: AJA ROSE - Paradise Blue > Skylife - Why

Oh my, three in your top 40?!!! *.*

I had no idea you loved Fall On Me so much either, although I can't blame you as it is fabulous! :D

Alright, new year, new Séyetana, sounding exactly like the old Séyetana :D

Babyraids Japan - Cinderella Na Jirarenai

I think this might be the most stereotypical Séyetan entry I've ever entered, it's got rock, it's got Japanese, it's got a cutesy pop aesthetic, their name isn't too dissimilar from Babymetal, and most importantly, it's a proper banger that I'm entering to see how many other fans of it I pick up.

(I mean, I gotta establish a baseline before I go off experimenting, right?)

It's a bit late, although sometimes we don't even report on the finishes of our entrants, but Kalafina have come home with a respectable 33rd position in the final of BJSC LXXXVIII. It was nonetheless a historic occasion as Fate/Zero's 2nd OP To The Beginning marks the first anime opening (OPs) that I am aware of that qualified for the BJSC final. Previous attempts include The Melancholy Of Haruhi Suzumiya's 2nd OP Super Driver in BJSC LVIII, sent by Umiiruka, before any Séyetan had knowledge of anime, Sword Art Online II's 1st OP Ignite in BJSC LXXX and Assassination Classroom's 2nd OP Jiriki Hongan Revolution in BJSC LXXXVI. For anime endings (EDs), Alteria's Beautiful Life in BJSC LXXXVII was the ending to the second season of Rin-ne but no other known endings have been sent to the main contest. This is with the exception of the Séyetan entry to BJSC LXXXI, Requiem, which was a one-episode ED and impact song for Dusk Maiden Of Amnesia, although of course that was sent in a remixed form.
idk why this is so late but i just found out that MASAYUME CHASING from a bjsc before I was even in the site was an OP for Fairy Tail

I never thought to check that but it makes sense as I loved that (and no, I still have not seen any Fairy Tail).

Girls Dead Monster - Ichiban No Takaramono (featuring the vocal talent of LiSA)

Translating as 'My Most Precious Treasure', Ichiban No Takaramono stuck with me after watching Angel Beats, asking that I come back to listen to it again and again and again and again and I can't list many songs from a TV show that have stuck with me like this, and yet I resisted entering it here because I was under the impression that it wouldn't do well. However, it's far too good to be left alone. I mean, FAR too good, because of the emotions behind the vocals and the steady building feeling that rewards you so well each time through, for a pop track, the soundscape is immense. And so, after it became my third-favourite song of last year, I decided I had to send this. Just to see what would happen. And also to prove Bré wrong on it being a nul pointer contender. #provebrewrong

There are two versions of Ichiban No Takaramono. I've entered the Girls Dead Monster, or the 'Yui version', a more rocky and slightly more upbeat version, named after the lead singer of GDM. Girls Dead Monster is the fictional rock band from the story of Angel Beats that 'released' this as a single with the actual vocals being sung by Japanese singer LiSA, who at the time was an unknown but has since gone on to bless many anime theme tunes with her voice including Sword Art Online and Fate/Zero. So my sort of anime music.

Anyway, I hope you all enjoy (and don't cry too much).

Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas - Let Me Hear

I think at this point, it's held on so long in my affections, that this might be my favourite electronicore song of all time. Possibly second to The Hardest Mistakes actually. But basically, expect similar to that - except this time I've left the harsh vocals in.

Let Me Hear is the opening song to the anime Parasyte~the maxim~, which makes it the first anime I've sent songs from twice to a BJSC as I sent a song from there to Instrumentals. But this has held on so well from that I barely associate it with the anime anymore, it's just an incredible invigorating tune that I listen to give me chills on a regular basis - and I just want to see if it can get anyone else on side. It has verses in English and a chorus in Japanese, despite at times sounding like that should be the other way around. Seriously, look at the lyrics and try to pick them out in the song, the English cadences are emphasised where you wouldn't expect them to and the Japanese hook line of the chorus bears a similarity to 'I keep calling out your name'.

But yes, give votes to the most hardcore song seen in BJSC for a good while.

OR... while I'll stress that the contest version that people should be voting on I've entered is the above and I think it, the original, is the best version of the song, which is why I entered it - I know that's not to everyone's tastes. So in the interest of giving as many people as possible a good discovery, as I think Let Me Hear is an incredible song no matter what genre it's been put into, I'll also share a cover version that turns it into a dark and haunting female vocalled ballad (with a few lyric changes to make the song completely English too).

i.e. if you're put off by the harsh vocals and have come here to complain, listen to that version to soothe your soul xx
