September 13, 201113 yr 'Hung Up', 'What You Waiting For' and 'Hey Ya' are quite possibly three of my most overrated songs ever. I honestly do not get why they are so popular  Each respective artist have FAR better imo. :( Isn't it a bit arrogant to claim they're all your songs? I think Madonna, Gwen Stefani and OutKast would have a word with that :kink:
September 13, 201113 yr Meh at another win for Bad Romance! I suggest it should be retired now to let someone else win next year :P I'm not sure how it can be beaten unless Lady Gaga releases some new song that sends the stans crazy. It's good but it's not even the best Gaga single of the last decade, let alone the best single full stop! And I really thought Robyn would win this year off the back of her last album campaign, but I guess she just isn't popular enough to beat the Gaga juggernaut. The results are indeed quite good overall. Varied, I think, which is good. I guess you could complain about the lack of dance in that respect but it's probably more of a reflection of the dire quality of commercial dance from 2001-2010 than anything else. Smooth presentation, RFC, bar that one hiccup! Good job :D
September 13, 201113 yr Boring winner. I still can't believe how poorly Mr. Brightside performed in the chart initially! Why could people not see how good it is then? Must be the absolute definition of a grower. I loved it on first listen but it took a lot of listens for it to find its way eventually to becoming one of my favourite songs of all time. A very deserved top 3 finish and I'm hoping it can do the impossible and win next year (which would make it the first male winner yes?) Thanks for running this RFC. :D But people could see how good it was back then. Very few songs got into the top 10 off the back of the support it received (i.e. attention in the indie press like NME, getting played on MTV2, minor support from Radio 1); it got that high purely because it was better them all. And for a band with very little fanbase, too! It got basically the same support as the first release of Somebody Told Me yet charted 18 places higher, which kind of says it all, surely?
September 13, 201113 yr I wonder if anything released in 2011 could challenge Bad romance, only one's I can think of are rolling in the deep, someone like you and on the floor

Fair enough I suppose. Maybe I should rephrase that as 'why did it not get much support initially'? It's become pretty much a radio staple since its release.
September 13, 201113 yr Fair enough I suppose. Maybe I should rephrase that as 'why did it not get much support initially'? It's become pretty much a radio staple since its release. It wasn't really a genre that was in vogue radio wise at the time. Awful R&B/Urban was dominating the charts to (most of it really was tragic back in 2004 imo - Eamon, Frankee, Chingy, J-Kwon, Cassidy etc :puke:) and commerical/mainstream radio didn't really cotton on to the new wave indie/rock bandwagon until 2005/6 when Snow Patrol/Kooks/Kaiser Chiefs etc began to dominate even Heart. In fact I can't even remember what radio WERE playing in 2004, I doubt they'd have been playing the type of R&B that was in the charts and I know that they weren't playing indie/rock yet. Pure pop and dance were both in a real lull too and didn't get much support. I think the likes of Anastacia, Will Young, Katie Melua and Dido were dominating radio at the time iirc, certainly radio playlists were even less out of sync with the charts than usual in 2004 and it's no surprise that singles from that year like Mr Brightside and Numb/Encore went on to much bigger things afterwards.

Other than that, Trick Me and Mr. Brightside (and Left Outside Alone I suppose) that is one appalling sales top 10. Airplay top 10 isn't much better and in fact probably a bit worse on the whole. 2004 seems fairly grim in general.
September 13, 201113 yr Yeah, barely any correlation there whatsoever as I expected. I don't see what's so hilarious about Summer Sunshine being #2, they were always a huge radio band and the song WAS at #12 in that very sales chart! More than can be said for some of the others in that airplay top ten! Funnily enough I do remember Single being played a lot on the radio at the time, she really rode on the coattails Daniel's success and the family name for getting Single out there didn't she! Although granted after that she probably became bigger than him (worldwide at least if not quite here). Interesting to see V there, a sort of failed attempt at launching a new boyband when nobody was interested. The Wanted basically ARE this band reincarnated, but at a time when they're back in vogue.
September 13, 201113 yr Is V the band Marvin JLS used to be a member of? Nope, that was mixed gender band VS who were also around in 2004.

Didn't notice that! Is V the band Marvin JLS used to be a member of?Nope. He was a member of VS. (They were rather excellent )

I wasn't laughing because I was surprised they were there! Just the thought of The Corrs still being hammered to death on radio in 2004 is probably the biggest reflection of how behind radio was with what the public was actually buying, that's all! At least someone like Joss Stone was having lots of people buy her album(s) I would say V were basically the last band to be successfully launched in the "old skool" way. They were on the same label with McFly and had been touring with them I think. Signings galore. Appearing on CD:UK et all plenty of times pre-release. I'm inclined to say Smash Hits were probably all over them too but I had stopped buying it by then. They weren't even in the airplay top 100 that week though!!! I guess so, I'll retract from going into defensive stan mode any further but Borrowed Heaven was a fairly successful #2 album (not up to their previous heights but still!) so it's not like radio were playing something completely irrelevant to the charts! Yeah I think so, my sister LOVED them and bought the album so at least the mass marketing worked on somebody. It's not a terrible pop album actually (the singles weren't a great representation) and half of the album could easily be given to One Direction now without changing much about the sound. I don't know if that says that One Direction are dated or that V were ahead of their time  Really though, apart from a select few nobody cared about them at all - pop boybands were so out of vogue at the time and seemed like old-hat next to Busted and McFly so it was no surprise that they got nowhere.
September 14, 201113 yr bad romance!? god awful song, terrible result, would rather have gwen or robyn at number 1 :(
September 16, 201113 yr What a surprisingly wonderful top 5 this had! :o Surely this has to be by far the best top 5 the contest has seen to date, all are 10/10 moments. Hey Ya top 10 too!

September 16, 201113 yr Wow, who knew Torn was THAT popular on here? :D Both years in the top 2! And suddenly the The Drugs Don't Work/Don't Look Back In Anger top 2 in the 1990s #1 Rate doesn't seem as surprising as everybody claimed back then looking at the 2006 game here! It's like BuzzJack has gone full circle and back to where it was before taste-wise! I doubt Angels would get that high now surely though. And why did Baby One More Time never make the top 10 until 2009 (its last year) - very strange, maybe people went off it due to its bubblegum influence before they finally accepted that it was too good a song to deny? Interesting stuff though. It's also strange how when the game was first run it was nowhere near as leaning to current releases as it is now - it's only really in 2008 that you can see that start happening more drastically. I agree this year has the best top 5. The early years are quite good too but they're ruined by Can't Get Out Of My Head constantly propping up its place there, and the last two by Poker Face and Since U Been Gone. This year is the first that I like the whole top 5. Edited September 16, 201113 yr by superbossanova
September 17, 201113 yr Author In 2006 BuzzJack had only just opened when this started, and it took a while for the stereotypical BuzzJack taste to become commonplace. Looking back at the voting thread for the original game, a lot of the voters were those that joined and mainly posted in the then thriving Will Young/Robbie Williams/Darius Artist Forums which resulted in more adult orientated MoR results.
