August 30, 201113 yr Author NO NO NO NO NO NO NO. You DONT just cover Massive Attack. I know Newton did and I liked his version but, no. Just, no. Teardrop is just the most moving, haunting song I know. José González did it much better than Newton Faulkner did. Nothing will ever beat the original obviously but to be honest it's been covered twice already, another cover won't hurt... maybe I'd be annoyed if it wasn't for charity though.

I havent heard the Jose Gonzales cover, I imagine it is similar to that of Newton. Everyone has one song that they dont want to be covered, this is mine. Especially if rap will be involved.
August 30, 201113 yr http://www.bbc.co.uk/pudsey/news/news250811.shtml Gary Barlow will be releasing a cover/new version of Massive Attack's 1998 UK #10 hit 'Teardrop' on 13th November (presumably it'll be out to download a day earlier) as the official Children In Need single for 2011. It features a bunch of British urban acts including Ed Sheeran, N-Dubz, Tinchy Stryder and Wretch 32. vidcapper will LOVE this. Hey... :P I wouldn't have described Ed Sheeran as urban, though (nor Gary Barlow, obviously). I never liked the original, so I doubt I'll dislike this one much more. However, I think it's a mistake including rap artists (and I'm not just speaking personally here). It's not usually the younger generation who are the main contributors to charities (as they have the least disposable income), but those of middle years/middle incomes - and such people are generally not keen on rap at all.
August 30, 201113 yr As much as I love Ellie, I've never loved an artist like her, but just no Massive Attack covers, not even from Ellie. Teardrop is too good to be covered. Its a very blinkered view but this song means so much to me. Oh, I agree. I really dislike covers but seeing as it has already been announced I was just stating my preference for the vocalist.
August 30, 201113 yr and such people are generally not keen on rap at all. That's a bit of a generalisation which I dont automatically agree with. Rap has been around long enough for people over the age of 30 to have experienced it's cross over in the early 90s.

Rap has been around long enough for people over the age of 30 to have experienced it's cross over in the early 90s. But that was before gangsta rap really appeared - it is that foul-mouthed, drug-dealing, crime-glorifying variant that older people find the most objectionable. Speaking personally, I don't know a single person over 30 who likes rap. Edited August 30, 201113 yr by vidcapper
August 30, 201113 yr Obviously #1 :( I know we've not heard their version yet but I've yet to hear a good charity cover so way to ruin a good song. At least we've always got the original even though it'll forever be tainted by the tacky brush.

August 30, 201113 yr I think vidcapper has a point. I think there are quite a few people over the age of 30 that like rap and hip hop, but I'm not sure if they'd be fans of Chipmunk and Tinchy Stryder. And I know I'm also making a sweeping generlisation, but I'm not sure how many N-Dubz fans donate to charity, and legally download songs (although, from a charts aspect, I'm sure a lot of people are relieved they don't legally download, or else they'd be forever in the top 10 with a song probably ). I'm not feeling too bad about it though. Considering some of the artists involved, like Ed Sheeran and Labrinth, I can't imagine them doing a straight-forward cover. I'm sure they'll write their own verses, remix the instrumental, etc.
September 14, 201113 yr apparently gary does sing on it according to a source on twitter with the urban gang taking care of the verses number 1

September 14, 201113 yr I just don't now how anyone could ever have thought this was a good idea. Why not write a new song or something? I can't see how Teardrop will sound good with those artists on it. I know I haven't heard it but I'm not sure I really need to in this case.
September 15, 201113 yr Do you know I really can't be bothered with this, Gary Barlow is such a tool for using this song, I'm prepared to have my opinion altered though when I've heard it.
September 15, 201113 yr It sounds like the biggest atrocity ever commited to music. Therefore-instant Number One.
September 15, 201113 yr Im still annoyed. This song is too good for these people that are known as 'musicians'. Sing swagger jagger or something.
October 2, 201113 yr Author What a boring name for this group - just 'The Collective'. Then again, Gary Barlow is a very boring person so it's only fitting. Have we still not heard this?
