Good grief! How on Earth did it get so popular!? It's not exactly the type of song people in the US tend to like. Was there some sort of controversy around the song which made it really popular or something? Or did everyone just happen to like that song, but no other rock songs?

I think it was also the most played song on the radio over the decade which explains it's ridiculously high position on that US end of decade chart

I don't really know what happened... there were other rock songs that were popular around the same time ("In The End" got to #2) that were far more deserving, imo. And they're Canadian! :o :P

Yeah. Very strange. I found the top 10 of the decade, and it's true! :o

1. Mariah Carey - We Belong Together - A deserving song to be #1 of the decade imo.

2. Usher - Yeah!

3. Flo Rida ft. T-Pain - Low

4. Nickelback - How You Remind Me :o

5. Black Eyed Peas - I Gotta Feeling

6. Alicia Keys - No One

7. Black Eyed Peas - Boom Boom Pow

8. Mario - Let Me Love You

9. Kanye West ft. Jamie Foxx - Gold Digger

10. Timbaland ft. One Republic - Apologize

It looks so out of place.

The UK's top 10 of the decade was embarrassing compared to that.

The UK's top 10 of the last decade (and the '90s actually) is filled with novelty and reality acts that are incredibly frontloaded. It won't be the same this decade, it'll be more like the US where the consistent sellers from strong sales periods dominate. In that top 10, eight hit #1 in the second half of the decade when downloads took over.

Agreed, that is a great top 10 for a decade that many people think is comfortably the worst since chart music began

That's going to be applied to every decade from now on though. A load of the people who thought that about the 00s will think it about the 10s and the 20s and the 30s and so on (if they're still alive then obviously - it tends to be older people that think this as their opinions are slightly warped by nostalgia and whatnot, that said I do far prefer the 90s to the 00s myself and I was only alive for less than half of the 90s ).

The top 10 of the 10s so far is very decent, hopefully we'll finish the decade with 10 songs that sold on merit alone compared to the 00s where there were only 2 and the others were novelty hits, charity singles and reality show winners.

novelty & Comic Relief/charity associated singles really seem to have taken a decline in popularity as the digital era began, (although, reality/X Factor related shows are still pretty strong), so yeah, I think the 10s will be pretty similar to the US (in terms of songs with longevity, not necessarily genre) who, judging by that top 10, seem comparitively less influenced by these sort of things

Yeah, I think the days of charity singles being million sellers are pretty much over now. Unless they do a fourth Band Aid single for the 30th anniversary in 2014 of course. That could easily pass a million. And when was the last big-selling novelty hit? Crazy Frog? I think they're a thing of the past as well.

X Factor winners' singles could still get very high sales - Matt Cardle should become a million seller fairly soon but I don't think he'll be in the decade end top 10 anyway as we seem to be getting a lot more million sellers on merit the last couple of years - but other than that the top sellers of the decade should all be 'proper' songs the way it's going so far. :D

I suppose it's a bit (well, a lot) too early to make bold predictions like this. We just have to hope it stays this way for another 8 and a bit years :P

I said this before, but I think Someone Like You could be the #1 of this decade. Yes, I'm aware there's still 8 years to go. But Someone Like You will remain a consistent seller forever, and it's one of those songs that makes an impact on people whenever they hear it (and they'll hear it a lot, since the song is so radio-friendly), so people will keep buying it. I also simply can't see any songs just being that big. And I also think sales will peak and fall in a few years, making it even more difficult for songs to overtake Someone Like You.

I imagine Just the Way You Are will end up in the decade-end top 10 aswell. The other 8 songs will probably be songs we haven't heard yet.

Unless of course a massive change happens to the way we buy music in that time, which results in sales sky-rocketing. Like if we did like that country in Asia where you get to download like 30 songs a month if you pay a subscription fee. Then none of the songs we know will make it, probably.

"It Wasn't Me" was one, what was the other song that was in the top 10 of the '00s on merit?

I think it was Can't Get You Out of My Head.

^ Kylie's Can't Get You Out of My Head I think, the rest was Pop Idol, X Factor, Comic Relief and Bob The Builder

Take note UK record companies, this is the way forward if they wanna stop piracy. OA/OS failed for many songs and hasn't decreased illegal downloads which is why they've gone back to '2010 ways'

Sales would go so high if they did that. Especially at the end of the month, people would just go on a downloading frenzy to use up their 50 songs.

A bad thing about that would be a lot of songs could sell even if they weren't that good. People would just be like "Oh, may aswell get that, because I can. I need to get something". Now, at least for some people, they can't afford to buy songs they aren't certain they'll like.

Pixie is decreasing fairly quickly now.

VERY suprised at how well Olly is doing. :o He could be #3 in a while.

So when is No Direction out midnight or tomorrow, does anyone know

Midnight.

And will probably be #1 by 12 noon. :(

Aren't most scheduled releases out at midnight? So then why would this be any different?

On a technicality Mikey, midnight is tomorrow.

Ha ha, I was alive for one quarter of the 60s :)

But you make a good point. People will always look back at the era they grew up as having the best music. And for me that's the 80s, and especially the early 80s.
