Adele succes is amazing but lets not forget before her we had "THE SPICE GIRLS" so she;s the most succefull british act since them.

Spice Girls were never as big as Adele in the USA which surely counts the most? I would agree Adele is probably the biggest British artist worldwide since at least George Michael/Wham!

I don't know if Adele is the biggest British chart success since the Beatles... remember George Michael racked up SIX no. 1s on the Billboard Hot 100 in a span of 6 years (plus 2 earlier with Wham)... but she's certainly up there. She will likely finish 2011 with the top selling album and single, and another top 5 selling single. Incredible.

Elton John.

Really?? well the spice girls albums sales in america tells otherwise look it up. Spice girsl were MASSIVE worldwide as well and they were the biggest british pop group since the beatles in the 60's. Maybe you're too young to remember how massive the spice girls were??

Spice Girls were way bigger than Adele based on both their first 2 albums and singles

Spice Girls sold about 12-14 million albums and 6 top 20 singles

Adeles has sold about 4 million albums and 2 top 20 singles so far.

They certainly were. Wannabe may have been their only #1 single there but the Spice album shifted over 8 million copies there and they were a huge phenomenon in terms of media recognition, cultural impact and branding, moreso than Adele could ever be purely because of the nature of the artist that she is. I wouldn't put Adele ahead just yet because she's had one extra chart topping single but we'll come back in ten years and assess the situation I guess!

Congrats to Adele :winner:

And another top 10 for Gaga :cheer: Matching Mariah's record for most consectutive top 10 singles on Billboard (every one since Just Dance)

It's not a record of any kind.

re: Spice Girls vs Adele: You really can't compare the album sales of 96-97 to the sales today.

Exactly, if Adele's 21 was released years ago, no doubt it would go and shift 10 million+ copies.

We dont actually know that. But the original poster stated that Adele is bigger than the Spice Girls were back then. That is not the case

Did Judas go top 10?

And Gaga has just reached Mariah's numbers, there are others with more.

I'm sure ONE OF THE artists with most consecutives #1 is Madonna, with 17 or 14 (can't remember for sure)

I believe Judas did get top 10 (it debuted at #10 iirc).

Judas did went top 10. The only single to miss it was Eh Eh (Nothing Else I Can Say) but it wasn't released as a US single so it doesn't count.
I don't recall a British artist having this much worldwide or domestic success ever before in my lifetime! Adele = nu Beatles!

the Spice Girls actually.....

they were a lot bigger... maybe u don't remember but back in 96-98, they were the biggest act on the planet racking up number 1's all over the globe in coutries where Adele could only dream of reaching... so OK Adele may have the voice & she's not a manufactured pop star, but the Spice Girls were way... way more succesful....

Elton John, George Michael; Duran Duran, Kim Wilde, Coldplay, Rick Astley,Spice Girls, Susan Boyle...to name but a few... all had more succesful careers than Adele so far...

Spice Girls only had 1 us #1 and Adele has had 2 - so she beats them already on one point.

I can't argue at Dannyboy's points about sales but Adele clearly has the potential to be bigger. Plus, i'm not too young to remember.

Susan Boyle? No.

We'll see if Adele can maintain her massive worldwide success with future albums before we can judge how she's done in comparison to the other ones. I'd argue she's bigger than at least a few of that list.

Susan Boyle? :???:

Honestly, though, it doesn't matter. Adele is just on her way to reaching the heights of those artists.

I think she will have more hits overall but I doubt she will ever come close sales wise, especially since the sales each yearwithin the industry get lower and lower every year.

If Adele gets to 10m US album sales (which I think could happen if she can sustain at least decent success for more than one more album) then surely given the lower album sales climate in general it's a bit unfair to say she's still not as big as The Spice Girls album-wise?
