Barbra Streisand an unexpected sucess? It was charting high on the dance pre-order chart and it got lots of radio 1 support, a lot of it from Chris Moyles when he did his "Duck Register" basically replacing Barbra Streisand with other peoples names. We all knew it would be a hit - it was very unlucky to slip to 3 at the end of the week thanks to Bruno Mars/Matt Cardle

In hindsight maybe it was obvious but at the time it was definitely fairly unexpected.

I have no idea which of the new entries next week will reign victorious. Jason Derulo has the potential, Dappy has the fanbase - as proved by 'Spaceship', Sak Noel has generated a lot of pre-orders, One Direction could easily spend a second week atop and as always Maroon 5 will pose competition.

My prediction - Dappy will debut in the T3, Jason Derulo will debut in the T10, Sak Noel in the T15 - still not sure whether it screams T10 hit; although I'm really enjoying it.

Sak Noel I think will be top 3, everyone seems to be raving on about it and it's awful imo.

'As always'? Maroon 5 have only been competition once so far.

An as if Sak Noel will miss the top 10. Have you not noticed about 10 different fake versions have charted in the last few weeks? It's guaranteed top 5 and I'm fairly certain it'll be #1, although not 100% certain as it may do a Stereo Love.

Sak Noel's not out until the week after :P

I was just listening to Holding On by Darren Styles. Does anyone think Turn Me On is SO similar to it!? :o

Cheers doing very well for Rihanna. I love this song. Up to #14 now.

Will Young #7

Well it was but now it's back at #8

Did ppl really think Moves Like Jagger would be a hit when they first heard it?

I heard the song back in June, and I loved it. But never did I think it would be as big as it is. Maroon 5 bombed with their last era, and Christina flopped even harder. It's an infectious tune, but I never ever expected it to do this well!

There have been so many singles that have did better than they deserved for example, Nero - Promises & Cher Llyod - Swagger Jagger. Disgusting that they became number one and have had such awful chart runs and awful sales yet you do see Artists in the top 10 for weeks always getting close to number one but somehow never making it. A lot of my favourite songs seem to have peaked at number #11 and do well in the charts, CoverDrive are #40 on iTunes and somehow managed to get top 10 3 weeks ago.

I thought it would be a one week in the low top 40 kinda song when I first heard it, then I thought it would make top 10 maybe when it began blowing up worldwide. Never did I expect this scale of success by any means though.

No. Not when I first heard it, I had no idea it would be this big (although it did get to #1 on US iTunes back in June iirc just after it was released). But a month ago it was quite clear it would be huge imo.

I always thought it would be big in the US. Just because it was performed on The Voice finale (or semi-final), and both Adam Levine and Christina Aguleria were very much in the public eye.

I did always have a feeling it could cause a surprise due to the success of The Voice, but I certainly didn't expect it to be anywhere near this level!

edit: so yeah, pretty much thought the same as Rooney :P

Yeah, I think the performance on The Voice was what got it to #1 there so early. And then it fell down to #50 after a couple of weeks or something, then re-climbed back to #1 a couple of months later (after they performed it a second time). I wonder if it would've been so big worldwide if it wasn't for The Voice.

It's the same thing with On The Floor and American Idol. People can say all they want that American Idol has no relevance outside of the US but it was the hype from On The Floor smashing in the US due to the American Idol connection that got radios to play it in other parts of the world. I'd imagine without The Voice MLJ wouldn't have done very well at all.

It's Cher Lloyd. Why do you always put the Y before the O?

Nobody cared about JLo @ the American Idol in worldwide basis. It was a strong comeback. It is easily the catchiest song of the year even it hadn't been for Jlo. Also it was not random that it was a duet with PitBul whos been very successful WW with his collaborations lately. Even the second single was a duet with the US-so- beloved-Lil. On the floor would have been a big hit even without Jlo imo. The fact that it was her comeback just made it bigger.

About 'Moves Like Jagger', it was an obvious hit imo and it has nothing to do with Idol. An instant, the kind of song that sounds like a hit on the first listen. (even though I do not like it and I would not buy it)

If On The Floor and MLJ (or even Born This Way) do not sound like hits what does? Roling in the Deep? Definitely not!!! It is a miracle that a such good (and not that mainstream) song became a huge worldwide hit but it is also rare.

You're right it had nothing to do with Idol. It has something to do with The Voice :kink:

But seriously, if Maroon 5 and Christina didn't have such a big platform to launch it on in the USA I'm almost certain it would have been far less successful. It probably would still have been a hit but on nowhere near the scale it is now.

-x-

Nice gains for Will (even if they are due to price reduction), if it isn't put back up to 99p within the next week or so I wonder if it could actually get back in the top 5 next week? With the new entries from Dappy and Jason Derülo (and James Morrison but he probably won't be top 5) it will be difficult but I can just about see it.
