Amanda Knox and Raffaele Sollecito have been acquitted of the murder of UK student Meredith Kercher following a successful appeal in Perugia, Italy.

Miss Knox, 24, and her ex-boyfriend Mr Sollecito, 27, had spent nearly four years in jail since they were convicted of killing the 21-year-old, from Coulsdon, south London, in 2007.

American Miss Knox sobbed as the judge said the pair would walk free.

Her family said she "suffered for four years for a crime she did not commit".

Speaking on the steps of the court, Miss Knox's sister Deanna said: "We are thankful to the court for having the courage to look for the truth and to overturn this conviction."

She also asked for privacy for her family to recover from "this horrible ordeal".

Protests outside

Hundreds of people had gathered in the streets outside the court ahead of the verdict and some shouted "shame" when they heard about the decision.

Inside the court, Miss Kercher's brother Lyle and sister Stephanie comforted each other as they remained seated in the courtroom with their mother Arline.

Earlier, Miss Knox, who is serving 26 years in jail for the killing, was given a final chance to state her case in a personal statement and she told a packed courtroom she was "paying with her life".

Tearful, and speaking in fluent Italian, the American said: "I did not kill, I did not rape, I did not steal. I was not there."

She added: "I want to go back home. I want to go back to my life. I don't want to be punished. I don't want my life and my future to be taken away for something I didn't do because I am innocent."

Her ex-boyfriend Mr Sollecito, who was given a 25-year term, told the court in his statement that he was in a "nightmare" and said the claims against him were "totally untrue".

Ahead of the verdict, Miss Kercher's family, who are in Perugia for the decision, said they would always find it difficult to forgive her killers.

Prosecutors had said they would appeal if the verdict is overturned. They had called for Miss Knox and Mr Sollecito's sentences to be increased to life in prison.

Miss Kercher had been sharing a cottage in Perugia with Miss Knox, who is originally from Seattle, during a year abroad from Leeds University when she was murdered.

Prosecutors said she was killed in a brutal sex game which went wrong. Her throat had been slit and she had been sexually assaulted.

A third person - Rudy Guede, 24 - was also convicted of Miss Kercher's murder in a separate trial and was sentenced to 30 years in prison.

His conviction was upheld on appeal but his sentence reduced to 16 years.

Well, justice at last...

I can't say I'm familiar enough with the story to be able to comment really.

The Daily Mail ran with a slightly different story though, before taking it down and posting the correct version. How utterly embarrassing! http://politicalscrapbook.net/wp-content/u...11/10/mailfail/

Oh dear. They must have put that up as soon as they heard the judge say he found her guilty for defaming another individual, which she was convicted of but since it would have been a three year sentence and she's already served four for something else they decided to let it slide

On the whole I'm pleased with this outcome, whilst I can't prove she's innocent, you equally can't prove she's guilty considering the flaws in the trial. And I think I'd prefer they release a potentially guilty person than lock up a potentially innocent one.

That really calls into question the journalism, sorry "journalism", that goes on there. The fact that they effectively fabricated an entire report to run just incase she was guilty.

I personally am quite interested in the case and believe she should never have been convicted on such horrific evidence. It was so poor and I really don't know how any judge with a degree of credibility allowed it to stand. Not only that, but any scientist worth their salt should never have stood by that evidence.

It's a strange world where she was imprisoned for four years yet

OJ Simpson

walks free. Just shows you what a good lawyer does.

She's as guilty a sin. Just like OJ a rich white American has got away with murder.

f*** off Chris.... Seriously... -_-

Did you hear the cries of "murderer" both inside and outside of the Court just after the verdict? Italians are very unhappy about this. Anyway there is a higher Judge and Karma, as the p**** who was disembowelled found out.

Go on Twitter and see how many say she's got away with murder. I'm far from being alone in thinking it. In fact an Admin on another forum called her a "murdering witch".

There is only one person who really knows who Murdered and Raped Meredith Kercher and she is no longer with us.

All the papers will have prepared two versions of the story although they may not all have included quite so much that was purely presumption (the stunned look, the prison van) and speculation (the suicide watch).

I expect there to be two versions ready to go, but the level of detail that was in that is what really knocked me for six. It was appalling.

OJ Simpson was white? Blimey, all those pictures of him were pretty rubbish then.

I meant a rich American. Typo.

As much as the investigation was entirely botched there was something definitely not right with her. Her body language, actions and character profile just strike me very sociopath-like. She's obviously a very deeply unpleasant young woman but of course this does not a murderer make.

We will never know now of course, with the Knox family hiring PR consultants, botched evidence, a very aggressive press.

I meant a rich American. Typo.

My arse.... Anyway, is Amanda Knox really all that "rich" compared to OJ..? Or Michalien Jackson...? Or Mike Tyson...? Well, I suppose she will be when she sues the arse off the Italian authorities and the makers of that woefully tacky and "playing fast and loose with the facts" piece of shit Tele-film starring the execrable Hayden Panettiere..... -_-

Dude, they basically lied out their arse, let's be honest....
