I have nostalgia of far preferring the Bee Gees version.

Tragedy was so overrated anyway, they had far better singles imo  The production on their cover was good though, Robin Gibb even said that they did a great job with it - always reminded me of the production on another #1 from eariler in 1998, Feel It by The Tamperer feat Maya.

It really was overplayed to the point of madness though, but at least it gave them a million seller.

I'm younger than you...

Yeah, I know. It's just that in one of my previous posts I was saying how my dad kept telling me at the time that Steps didn't write the song, and how the original was better, then you come along a few minutes later and say pretty much the same thing.

2008 was the best ever year - talent like Alexandra, JLS (before they turned shit), Diana, Laura, Rachel and Ruth all in one year was and still is unheard of.

Having said that, this year came really close before that dumbass girl Kelly Rowland got rid of Amelia!

Yeah I agree 08 was brilliant. I also loved Austin. 7 brilliant acts that year out of 12 is pretty great.

It was only a million seller because it was basically two songs being counted as one though, surely? Which is what makes it even more ridiculous that the OCC doesn't count two of the same song (Mysterious Girl) as one, it should be a million seller combined but they don't acknowledge it as one. (Unless the sales tally for its original chart run was too high?)

Or to put it a different way, there's 2 songs counted as 1 to be a million seller (Tragedy and Heartbeat) and there's 1 song counted as 2 to not be a million seller (Mysterious Girl).

Stereo Hearts up to #3! :o

Ed Sheeran down to #7. Coldplay up to #28 (they might make top 40 this week after all then). Beyonce up to #90 (I love Countdown, I hope it's a smash).

Jason Derulo's next single up to #132. When We Collide at #126. Could it manage a million this year?

Listening to Tragedy again (the Steps version... B-) ) So much nostalgia.

I do kinda remember some hi-larious alternate lyrics other kids made up for the thing <_ but that par for the course i was always sensible one. and we were using it in morning routines stuff everyone really embarrassed at it.>

So, will some of the stuff we're listening to now be ridiculed by those in primary school now in 10 years time due to them having cheesy memories from when they were there? Feels a bit weird to think that.

It must be me getting old. So almost 18. :drama:

How would that work? You couldn't buy the songs separately?

When you bought the CD or the cassette, you purchased both songs but it would only count as 1 sale surely?

Oh, I'm annoyed at GCH going top 3, I was starting to warm to the idea of Christina Perri re-peaking this week. Ah well, she should still get back to her previous peak which isn't too bad considering how much it's sold already. And hopefully GCH can get to #2 now if they're going to be in the top three.

Ed Sheeran has been #7 for a while (unless he briefly went up to #6 earlier? I don't remember that happening but maybe it did, IDK).

I thought you were referring to 'Paradise' for a second there :P It is encouraging that Fix You is still climbing on the Monday evening, I still don't think it'll make the top 40 this week as it's sure to start the plummet before too long, but I'd love to be proven wrong obviously. The live version in the low top 200 could be helping it out quite a bit.

WWC can't be far off the million mark now. I hope it does make it by the end of the year. I still think it's by far the best winner's single.

I think it would have sold a million on its own to be honest, or very close to it. Heartbeat wasn't exactly a popular song at the time, it was ALL about Tragedy, nobody even ever referenced Heartbeat, even though it led the double a-side...

Heartbeat was already available on Step One too, it was Tragedy that got 95% of the airplay, maybe even more, I can't say I ever recall hearing Heartbeat on the radio although I recall seeing the hilariously crap cheap looking video quite a few times

Heartbeat and Tragedy were promoted separately though, so the double A-Side of Heartbeat/Tragedy was essentially acting as a 2-track album rather than a single, if you get me. People who didn't like Heartbeat could have been won over by Tragedy (and presumably they were in quite large numbers, since the double A-Side did far better when Tragedy started being promoted)

Maybe, I don't know. You're more knowledgeable on this than me so I'll trust your logic and let Steps have their million seller  I still think Peter Andre deserves his though (even if he is a hateable human being).

Isn't the biggest seller of all time in a similar situation though? The second half of a double a-side even though the first half got barely any attention whatsoever and accounted for a tiny percentage of its sales.

I got that.

Party Rock Anthem, definitely. And maybe some like California Gurls and I Gotta Feeling might be nostalgia fodder for those kids. Although I don't think the music now is as cheesy as it was back then, so it'll be less easy to ridicule in the future.

And let alone in primary school, even in college people made up stupid alternate lyrics for songs. The main culprit was Good Times by Roll Deep.

I can already SEE Sexy And I Know It being exactly this. :kink:

It's sold over 2 million though so no matter how you 'split' the sales between the two at least one of them is a million seller in its own right.

I reckon Something About The Way You Look Tonight would have been lucky to have been a 100k seller in its own right! Heartbeat may have sold 300k as a single a-side purely because of their status at the time, but I still think that had Tragedy been released by itself (bearing in mind that it was available on no studio or compilation album until late 1999) it would have still got to a million.

It's all speculation though really :P The only way we'd know this for sure is if the double A-Side were released in the digital era (although then the OCC may have had a hard time of deciding which to combine the sales of the 'EP' to)

Oh, I forgot about LMFAO. Of course they're going to be nostalgic. Oh dear at the Sexy And I Know It video even more, then.

Do It Like A Dude, Price Tag and I Need A Dollar seem likely fodder to me as well. I actually can't take the latter seriously any more (I've seen to many Sickipedia jokes/heard it joked about in real life/been listening to Til I'm Gone too much)

Yep! And when we can only speculate we have to look at the cold hard facts, that being that Steps have a million seller :P Whether they got it through a double a-side we'll never know but they still have a valid one which can never be taken away from them!
