"D'You Know What I Mean?" is still pretty well-regarded I think, certainly in comparison to its parent album. I personally love it, and Noel Gallagher (who's been notoriously unfond of Be Here Now in recent years) almost included it on "Stop the Clocks" a few years ago. It would have been the 19th track on there but got taken off at the last minute because it's so long Noel thought it would disrupt the flow of the compilation.

Top 3 time......

3. D'YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN?- Oasis (710,300)

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/5/59/D'You_know_what_I_mean_(oasis_single).jpg

Capturing over 20% of all singles bought in that week this opened with a rather impressive tally of 377K, at that point in 1997 a record and rushed to a fortnightly sale of just shy of half a million! It should say something that ended up being well over half it's eventually tally. In a way it was a record that was bound to disappoint, overly long and self indulgent, it didn't dampen the enthusiasm for the next album "Be Here Now" which debuted even more triumphantly at No 1 selling some 663k in just three days. Taking the unusual step (and this is a testament to the band's status in 1997) they were allowed to perform a six minute version of the trrack at TOTP- virtually unprecidented.

2. DON'T LOOK BACK IN ANGER- Oasis (761,900)

Often regarded as their best work, "Don't Look Back In Anger" debuted at the top (indeed they never climbed to the top) on a sale of a quarter of a million, more impressive by the fact that it was the fourth single from the Morning Glory album which itself had shifted around 2 million by the time of the singles release. A staple sound for a night out in 1996 I assure you, often played last song of the night with a bottle of Hooch in my hand!

And your winner (i know you all know but)......

1. WONDERWALL- Oasis (999,800)

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/1/17/Wonderwall_cover.jpg

Proclaimed as a modern classic virtually on release, "Wonderwall" has become their swansong. It was EVERYWHERE back in late 95, widely expected to make No 1 upon release it was denied famously by Robson & Jerome that still outpaced them in 1995 sales and indeed are still ahead. It was song that everyone felt they could relate to, and the ability to appeal to such a wide range of audience resulted in it being, in terms of longevity and sales, far and away their most successful track ever!

250k in a week from an album that was as ubiquitous as "21" is today is in a way more impressive than 377k in a week from an album that no one owned. Two great songs, DYKWIM is of course incredibly overblown and self-indulgent but it retains a unique charm for me - maybe because the chorus lyric of "all my people; right here, right now" is so on the ball for how big they had become. If the album had been full of moments like that, its sales would have been frightening.
And your winner (i know you all know but)......

When was the sales deadline for this? "Wonderwall" is, for me, arguably their finest instrumental moment but it's the one song where Liam's vocals grate on me a little. Still, you can't imagine anyone else singing it.

When was the sales deadline for this?

Sales to teh end of the 90s. As with all sales 94-96 they got downgraded hence it took until 2006-ish for it to officially sell a million if that's what you were wondering?

bloody hell, Oasis with 60% of the top 10 - I knew they were massively successful, but it still surprises me :o Wonderwall isn't Oasis' finest moment for me, it doesn't even come close to Don't Look Back In Anger, but its still a great song, its simplicity is its key really

Cast No Shadow and Slide Away are by far the best Oasis tracks for me, but Wonderwall takes it for their best single imo.

Without Oasis (and James :P)

Never liked Dont Look Back in Anger because of Noel's voice but I can't deny that it is effective.

I'm prepared to listen to Oasis still up until 'Roll With It' - it's funny, I think as soon as Tony McCarroll got kicke out they went really shit. How strange. Must admit that 'Live Forever' gets on my tits now though.

I think 'Bittersweet Symphony' is one of the worst records to ever hit the top 5. There's not a single redeeming feature about it. It's massively repetitive, the vocals are lazy and boring, the apparently 'iconic' video is a direct rip off of Massive Attack. I remember Jo Whiley playing it on the evening session for the first time and the ridiculous response to it. The Verve were a rubbish band riding on the coat-tails of Shoegaze, then they came back as a rubbish dad-rock band riding on the coat-tails of Oasis.

Still, despite all my grumbling about Britpop, thanks for doing this Gezza - it's far more interesting to read a run down on an interesting subject than yet another "top 50 girl band records of 1997" or whatever's going on elsewhere.

I am prepared to listen to Oasis when Liam is singing. I find my favourites are Live Forever, Morning Glory, Some Might Say, Bring it On Down and Falling Down. I like Don't Go Away too.

That'll be my other thread then! :(

Interesting then that "Falling Down" is sung by Noel. I've found that Noel's three singles off his solo album so far have all effectively been inferior versions of past Oasis singles ("The Death Of You and Me"/"The Importance of Being Idle", "AKA... What A Life!"/"Falling Down", "If I Had A Gun"/"Don't Look Back In Anger"). Since I love all those Oasis songs I really enjoy the Noel ones as well though.

Oh, I read that it was DYKWIM? at #2 on Oasis' best-sellers - I guess the difference comes in revising the sales estimates? Unless DYKWIM? has just been downloaded a lot more than DLBIA, but they don't really sell many downloads at all bar the occasional reappearance of Wonderwall or Stop Crying Your Heart Out AFAIA.

That list is probably from... actually I don't know when it could be from, "Don't Look Back In Anger" never charted after January 1997 and will be a far bigger trickle seller than "D'You Know What I Mean?".
