Supergrass: Late In The Day

I would go for Richard III, She's So Loose or Moving (though SSL isn't a single and Moving is too late!)

Garbage were great but it was always all about 'Vow', 'My Lover's Box' and 'You Look So Fine' for me.

20. DISCO 2000- Pulp (264,300)

After the debate as to whether this would would make it or not, here it is! The third release from "Different Class" had the benefit of Xmas sales to bump it up into our top 20. In 1995 Pulp could do little wrong and all three of thier singles from that year appear on our rundown- yay!

19. A DESIGN FOR LIFE- Manic Street Preachers (268,400)

Marking a major shift in popularity for the band, "A Design For Life" was the first fruits of life without Richey Edwards, and proved to be the springboard to a string of 14 consecutive top 20 hits where before they would struggle to enter the top 20. Despite leading initially- it eventually entered the charts at No 2 (behind Mark Morrison) but did lead to the million selling "Everything Must Go" Album.

18. A GIRL LIKE YOU- Edwyn Collins (280,600)

This is one of the "contencious" inclusions in my list. Released in 1995 Collins was former frontman for 80s group Orange Juice and seemed to perfectly fit within the Brit pop feel of the times, Incidentally no Paul Weller or Morrissey record would have sold enough to make our list had they been eligible or I would considered them too.

I would include Edwyn Collins in the list too, A Girl Like You definitely appeared on the Britpop compilations of the time and I certainly associated it as a Britpop track.

GREAT to see Disco 2000 and A Design For Life, both really amazing tracks. Disco 2000 in particular was a MAJOR favourite of mine back in 1995, a practically perfect pop song (plus I get bragging rights over Jester which is WAY more important! :D )

I haven't posted on this yet (oddly enough), but thank you Gezza for a wonderful countdown thusfar. I picked up the CD1/2s of Design for Life in a charity shop last year, the b-sides are surprisingly good, and the packaging is rather nifty too. Didn't realise Edwyn Collins sold almost 300k with A Girl Like You. Was it playlisted on Radio 1 at the time?
I remember hearing Edwyn Collins all the time on the radio in the mid 90s, can't remember whether that was Radio 1 or commercial stations however.

If it isn't there, could you give us sales anyway? I would love to know how much Help The Aged, Something Changed and Babies has sold as well :D

Now that we know the two remaining pulp tracks to chart- i've had a look at your request. Whilst I can't locate exact sales for any of them I can tell you what I can deduce!

"Babies" failed to show up on the 94 best sellers list meaning that it sold less than 49k (Est 33k)

"Something Changed" again failed to show up on 96's list meaning it sold under 122k (est 72k)

"Help The Aged" similarly failed to show on the 97 list meaning it sold under 80k (est 67k)

Your Welcome.

AGLY did top the Radio 1 and capitol radio's playlist and indeed was the No 1 on the airplay chart for W/E 15.07.95- it was everywhere! :D

Cool stuff. I guess the closest equivalent of this sort of thing happening now would be if the lead singer of The Automatic suddenly came out with a solo track next year that was massive and playlisted everywhere (don't shoot me, Orange Juice fans :P )

Booooo!

I am very happy to be wrong here, very pleased Disco 2000 sold so much

As for Edwyn Collins, I would count him as Britpop too. AGLY was one of the first CD singles I bought as I had been buying vinyl/cassette singles up to that point!

Thanks so much gezza :D

"A Design For Life" is a classic, "Disco 2000" is JUST ABOUT my favourite Pulp single - my third and fifth favourites may still feature as the same entry :D
