Who kept entering the Top 40 with their new hit before the previous one had left? And who has managed the longest string of consecutive occurrences of this nature?

(feels like Rihanna hasn't left the chart in 5 years)

Rihanna dropped out briefly a few weeks ago so I think the longest current run is by Adele. Make You Feel My Love entered in October 2010 and she has been ever present since then.

I shall leave the all-time records to others.

Correction - Bruno Mars entered a week before Adele and has been there ever since. This means that he has had at least one song in the top 40 ever since he first entered the chart at the end of September 2010.

90 weeks

Surely these are not even close to the all-time record which is probably from the 50s or 60s.

The Beatles for example were in top 40 at least from January 1963 to June 1964.

Edited by SKOB

According to everyhit.com:

Longest Continuous Run in The Top 40 by an Artist:

135 weeks by Elvis Presley. From July 1960 ("A Mess Of Blues") until Feb 1963 (when "Return To Sender" left the chart) - a total of 12 hits.

It's just a shame that this site no longer seems to be adding contemporary data.

According to my research, the Acts with the most Top 40 Weeks, in a row, are:,

1) Elvis Presley - 135 Weeks (From W/E 28th July 1960 - 'A Mess Of Blues' - No.19 to W/E 23rd February 1963 - 'Return To Sender' - No.33)

2) Cliff Richard - 125 Weeks (From W/E 9th May 1959 - 'Mean Streak' - No.14 to W/E 21st September 1961 - 'A Girl Like You' - No.32)

3) The Beatles - 102 Weeks (From W/E 1st December 1962 - 'Love Me Do' - No.32 to W/E 8th October 1964 - 'A Hard Day's Night' - No.28)

THE SHADOWS

However, since about 2004, the Guinness, (& Virgin), Books, & The OCC, have regarded Cliff Richard & The Shadows Hits, as also

being Shadows Hits. As well as Cliff Richard & The Drifters Hits.

If we do that, then The Shadows have the longest continuous Top 40 'Run'.

The Shadows - 185 Weeks (From W/E 9th May 1959 - 'Mean Streak' - No.14 (Cliff Richard & The Drifters) to W/E 17th November 1962 - 'It'll Be Me' - No.35 (Cliff Richard & The Shadows)

I'd say that Gaga and BEP have had quite long spells in the Top 40.
Correction - Bruno Mars entered a week before Adele and has been there ever since. This means that he has had at least one song in the top 40 ever since he first entered the chart at the end of September 2010.

Infact, if you included Nothing on You and Billionaire, he's been Top 40 ever since Nothing on You charted in May 2010! :D (NOY hadn't left the Top 40 when Billionaire debuted, and Billionaire hadn't left the Top 40 when JTWYA debuted)

Never realized Bruno Mars has done that long! :o And just when Marry You is about to leave the chart, Runaway Baby and It Will Rain get in. :drama:  I think there's the slight chance that his song with Lil Wayne could get into the top 40 soon too, but I think It Will Rain will last a long time.

I was thinking that, but I assumed Billionaire must have dropped out before JTWYA entered or Suedehead would have mentioned it (and NOY). You're right though - I make that 77 weeks in a row (78 on Sunday)!

Oh, so he's actually on 78 weeks already and 79 this Sunday.

EDIT: Actually, I must have made an error somewhere above because there's definitely only been 77 chart weeks since Nothin' On You was #1... I can't find where I've made the error though!

EDIT2: Found it. Yes, he is on 77 weeks.

I'm surprised 2 weeks ago was the first time he's ever had 3 concurrent top 40 entries!

I'd say that Gaga and BEP have had quite long spells in the Top 40.

Lady GaGa's best Top 40 Run was:,

41 Weeks (From 10th January 2009 - Just Dance (Feat. Colby O'Donis) - No.3 to W/E 17th October 2009 - Lovegame - No.28)

Her best Top 50 Run was 89 Weeks (From 10th January 2009 - Just Dance (Feat. Colby O'Donis) - No.3 to W/E 18th September 2010 - Alejandro - No.47)

The Black Eyed Peas best Top 40 Run was:,

41 Weeks (From W/E 23rd May 2009 - Boom Boom Pow - No.1 to W/E 27nd February 2010 - I Gotta Feelin' - No.33)

Their best Top 50 Run was:,

54 Weeks (From W/E 23rd May 2009 - Boom Boom Pow - No.1 to W/E 29th May 2010 - I Gotta Feelin' - No.43)

Apart from having the longest Top 40 'Run' by a Female, (90 Weeks), Rihanna seems to have the 2nd longest

Top 40 'Run' too - for a Female:,

The 'Run' that puts her in 2nd place:,

From W/E 26th May 2007 - 'Umbrella' (Feat. Jay-Z) - No.1 to W/E 3rd May 2008 - 'Don't Stop The Music' - No.37 = 50 Weeks

The Singles Chart was a Top 12 from W/E 15th November 1952 to 25th September 1954,

so Frankie Laine's consecutive Weeks were in the Top 12. The Chart was a Top 20 from

W/E 2nd October 1954 to W/E 7th April 1956, so 51 Weeks of Bill Haley & The Comets

56 Weeks, were in the Top 30. The Chart was a Top 30 from W/E 14th April 1956 to

W/E 5th March 1960, so Elvis Presley's 61 Weeks were in the Top 30 - as were

Pat Boone's 71 Weeks. The Chart became a Top 50 on W/E 12th March 1960 -

when the Record Retailer Chart was first used, instead of the New Musical

Express Chart. The Everly Brothers had their 59 Weeks inside the Top 50

- but, I've only counted their consecutive Top 40 Weeks.

1) Frankie Laine's longest Chart Run was:,

52 Weeks (From W/E 4th April 1953 - I Believe - No.11 to W/E 27th March 1954 - Grenada - No.10 & Blowing Wild - No.12)

2) Bill Haley & The Comets longest Chart Run was:,

56 Weeks (From W/E 10th March 1956 - See You Later Alligator - No.9 to W/E 30th March 1957 - Don't Knock The Rock - No.21)

3) Elvis Presley's longest Chart Run was:,

61 Weeks (W/E 11th May 1957 - Too Much - No.13 to W/E 5th July 1958 - Wear My Ring Around Your Neck - No.28)

NOTE - Elvis also had a 45 Week 'Run', in the 1950's:,

45 Weeks (From W/E 12th May 1956 - Heartbreak Hotel - No.15 to W/E 16th March 1957 - Mystery Train - No.25)

4) Pat Boone managed:,

71 Weeks (From W/E 6th July 1957 - Love Letters In The Sand - No.18 to W/E 8th November 1958 - If Dreams Came True - No.27)

5) The Everly Brothers managed:,

59 Weeks (From W/E 16th April 1960 - Cathy's Clown - No.22 to W/E 27th May 1961 - Walk Right Back/Ebony Eyes - No.32)
