December 9, 201113 yr First of all, I'm glad you added that part in brackets, as not once did I mention that Leona Lewis is comparable in any way, shape or form to Johnny Cash, so the insinuation I may have any kind of disorder was a bit random. I'm a massive fan of Leona, but only a complete moron would try to compare the two. That said, I still disagree with the stance in their being "no real point" in her covering the song. Why not? Isn't it possible that, like us, she finds the song moving and dark, and beautiful, and simply wants to pay tribute to it (while raising money for a charity I believe)? Actually, why does there have to be a point? She's a singer. She likes to sing songs. She obviously likes this song. What's to stop her? I just don't understand. Oh, and I just cannot fathom this notion that a cover version can "ruin" the original song. How is that possible? The original is still there, it's not damaged. In fact, usually a cover version works wonders for the original, regardless of the quality, as people naturally go looking for the original to compare them. I'd imagine it'll be the same with this song, as it's not a typically well known song. Just because she is a singer and she likes to sing songs is not a valid enough reason to cover a song, especially not a song like Hurt. There has to be point because otherwise she will do it terribly and bland, which according to next post I have quoted that is true. I thought you had heard Hurt before? the reason why it is such a special song is because of how personal it is, and the great amount of emotion put in by Cash/Reznor. Lewis has been through f*** all in her life, she is a diva, Hurt has completely no relevance to her. People shouldn't just record songs because they like sing songs, there should be actual point, clealry you like trash such as Leona Lewis but I happen to think music is an art form, and should be treated as such, for points i've reiterated a thousand times already, Lewis can't perform this song with a decent amount of emotion to compare to the original and Cash's version, therefore her cover is pointless. People shouldn't record and release just any old crap, they should put in alot of effort and make a piece of art, not just sing songs cos they like it. I like playing guitar, doesn't mean I should start recording bad versions of Johnny B Goode. will have to agree to disagree on the ruining a song point, I understand what you're getting at but I disagree, surely a bad cover version of a classic song is a ruined version, obviously one can still enjoy the original but acts can still ruin a song by doing it badly enough. Her cover of "Hurt" is beyond bland IMO. Thank you for confirming that my thoughts are true. could someone link me to where I can hear her cover? or will I want to be killing myself due to how bad it is, not due to the emotion put into the song. I remember the first time I saw NIN I literally had tears in my eyes when they closed with Hurt (and so did Trent), it was emotional and beautiful. I think it's going to hurt (no pun intended) me hearing such a bland emotionless version of it.

December 9, 201113 yr It's not a bad cover as such, it's the wrong song for her to do this to though. For me, it's just the fact that the original and Johnny Cash's version are so full of emotion and this... just isn't. I love Leona but I'm not gonna try and claim this is even 1/100th as emotional or sincere as either the original or Johnny Cash's - because it simply isn't. I do hope nobody calls music snobbery on people slating this because it'd be pathetic and overlooning - tbh I'd much rather listen to a Leona album than one by Johnny Cash or NIN (just my general taste in music) but the bottom of it is that you cannot say this does justice to the original. I don't mind it but it's just so soulless compared to the other 2 versions, and the bottom line is that overproduction.
December 9, 201113 yr Is there any good uploads to YouTube for any of the songs? All I can find is speeded up versions!

Hmmm. I do know the song. I know it well. I'm not sure why you would question that. I therefore completely understand the emotional connection there is to both the original and Johnny's version. For different reasons of course. However, I still don't understand the issue with her covering the song if she wants to. Why should she be told what she shouldn't do? Her music could be considered her art, so even though you think it is trash, it's clearly not to her. I listened to her version and, while it's not entirely unpleasant, I don't personally rate it that highly. Probably for the reasons we've already discussed (emotional connection etc) but I still don't want her crucified for wanting to put out a version of a song she likes possibly just as much as anyone else. It just means that I'll go listen to Johnny's version again before I consider giving her's a spin in future. Also, how can you just assume that the song has no relevance to her? We don't know what's going through her head when she sings it. While it might not be a reflection of her own life, how are you to know that someone she knows hasn't been through hell and back? It can still strike a chord with her even when it's not actually about her.
December 9, 201113 yr I love all 3 tracks! They're brilliant :D Will this be out in the UK on Sunday? Leona said she's performing on Saturday on Twitter/Facebook (can't remember which) - so would that mean lost sales? Hopefully it won't make too much difference!
December 9, 201113 yr Thankfully Iris and Colorblind are much better! Well like I said above, Hurt isn't bad but it's just too overproduced, and it sucks the emotion from it. Had she done it in the same way as the other 2 tracks she'd have done amazingly with it but it just falls a bit flat...
December 9, 201113 yr I've heard Hurt but I'm so confused why they put such a messy track out. The ending is horrific. The backing track completely overpowers her vocals. And it just does not work on piano. It sounds like someone hit the wrong key.
December 9, 201113 yr Vocally 'Hurt' is good, those low notes sound great! But the backing track is too loud and takes any soul or emotion the original (and Johnny Cash's did). Iris is good however but too slow! Might have to edit that haha.
December 9, 201113 yr Iris is just sublime. Her voice is PERFECTION on it! Kinda wish it had been released instead, but tbh i love all three songs. So glad to hear new Leona music :)

I think the discussion was talking about in general, and before actually hearing that specific interpretation. Fair enough if dont like it after, but go in open-minded. :) Really looking forward to tonight's performance, been 2 years, cant wait! :D Why is it not available in Ireland anymore though? :o  Edited December 10, 201113 yr by Karma
December 11, 201113 yr Is it just me, or is there nowhere near as much emotion in Johnny Cash's version either? Having listened to all three, the original by Nine Inch Nails is very good and is clearly very special to the singer in NIN. I do admit that Leona's is nowhere near as emotional, but out of the three it would be my preference due to my music tastes. But Johnny's doesn't have either of those appealing qualities. Very overrated.
December 11, 201113 yr #5 now. This is amazing. It obviously really touched a lot of people, beautiful.
December 11, 201113 yr Hope it goes Top 5 officially even though its not the best I want her to have another Top 5 under her belt.

I can see the story behind Johnny Cash's version is very sad (he recorded it when he knew he was dying) but listening to it, it doesn't really touch me at all. He is obviously a great musician and well renowned but I don't think his voice really lends itself too well to emotion. I definitely agree with the general consensus that Leona really cannot touch the NIN version, even though her Hurt has really grown on me a lot.

Leona sings it very well, but she doesn't really connect with it as it isn't her song. The original is always going to be the most emotional as Trent wrote it for himself. If you didn't know anything about the back stories to the three artists recording their version of 'Hurt'. It would go NIN>Leona>Johnny imo.

Agreed, it's pretty much always the same with a cover, you just can't own a cover... And yeah, stripping away the stories I definitely agree - I'm not going to deny Johnny's version will touch people (of course it will) but it doesn't do much for me.
