It's exactly two years since Leona Lewis' second studio album 'Echo' debuted at number one. It was one of 12 debuts in the Top 40, the others being from Queen, N-Dubz, Will Young, Stereophonics, Them Crooked Vultures, Ronan Keating, The Carpenters, 50 Cent, Norah Jones, Foster & Allen, and John Mayer. The album debuted with sales of nearly 162k, significantly less than the 375,872 copies Spirit debuted with, but it was still the 3rd highest sales for a number one album so far that year. Since then, it has been certified 2x Platinum and it's sales are comfortably passed 600k.

Unfortunatly, Echo was one of many to suffer a huge drop after the Christmas/New year rush, others including Rod Stewart, Westlife, Michael Jackson, and Soliders. Only the release of I Got You seemed to help Echo keep stable, and even push it Top 40 for a week.

 

Two singles were released from Echo - Happy and I Got You. Happy got off to a very good start, settling at number two, after being overtaken by Black Eyed Peas during the week. However, Happy didn't remain too happy for long (sorry, I couldn't resist! :P ) as it plummetted down the chart, only being rescued for a couple of weeks by the New Year sales rush. I Got You didn't have a great success, as it became the first Leona single not to reach the Top 10, peaking at #14. Only one other song from Echo managed to chart - her cover of Oasis' number two hit Stop Crying Your Heart Out debuted at #55 the same week Echo was released, and peaked at #29 after an X Factor performance.

 

I don't own Echo, and I haven't listened to any of the songs apart from the three that charted, but Stop Crying Your Heart Out is one of my favourite Leona songs :wub: , her version was fantastic, and I was really sad to hear it wasn't released as a single! :( So what's your opinion on the album? What's your favourite track? How would you have released the singles? What promotion do you think should have been done to have saved the album?

 

 

 

 

Stop Crying Your Heart Out was one of my faves too! I loved Echo, much better than Spirit in my opinion :) I think my favourites along with SCYHO were Outta My Head, Naked and My Hands (along with the two singles) :)

I'll have to have a listen to the album on YouTube. Tbh, apart from the singles, Spirit was a bit "meh" :(

Love this album... shame about I Got You... if it had been the first single with an xfactor performance i think it woulda got the attention and success it deserved... shame it didnt really catch on, or boost the album much... mothers day had a bigger effect if i remember correctly, pushing it back to 35... top 40 for the only time since 2009 :-S

 

also a shame they seemed to give up so early... Cant Breathe was a BIG missed opportunity IMO!

Not releasing 'Outta My Head' was the BIG missed opportunity here, it still pains me. WHY give her a song of that calibre and just let it go to waste? They could have even saved it for later on and released it in place of 'Collide', or something.

i quite liked Outta My Head, but mainly coz it was a bit different for Leona... as a stand alone song im not quite as mad about it... was never personally sure it was single material (altho i know many fans loved the song... and it was great live in concert) :-)

It's still as incredible as when I first heard it. 'Alive' is the most underrated from this album, I feel. No one seems to talk about that much but I find it stunning personally.

I have no problem with saying that this is one of my favourite ever albums and MILES better than Spirit, although I suppose that makes me seem like quite the Leona loon. It's so BIG sounding compared to her previous album and some of the songs really are rather 'epic' as much as I hate using that word. I'll do a rate when I've been through and had a fresh listen.

Jonjo i completely agree! I LOVE Alive! Also love Broken as well, disapoints me we've never had a live performance of either :o :(

Amazing album, Happy, Broken, Naked, Alive & Lost Then Found are 4 of my favourite ever leona songs that i still listen to daily, and all 10s for me. :wub: :wub:

Cant believe its been 2 years, and we're still waiting for the 3rd album!

I adore Stone Hearts too, I always seem to be the only person that massively cares for it :lol: I still actually prefer Spirit though if I'm being completely honest - Bleeding Love, Whatever It Takes, Better In Time, Take A Bow, I Will Be, Angel, The Best You Never Had, Footprints In The Sand and A Moment Like This (plus Run and Forgive Me if we're talking about the deluxe) are all great to me.
