December 7, 201113 yr I suppose I could do just the #1s of 1971-1980 (most of them are reasonably well-known), then the top 3s of 1981-90, 91-2000 and 01-11. It's supposed to be a Christmas hits rate rather than a Christmas songs rate though so I wouldn't include Wizzard as that never went top 3. The only non-Xmas-top-3 hit I'd include would be 'Justified And Ancient' by The KLF feat. Tammy Wynette (Xmas #4 in 1991), as I can't have Bohemian Rhapsody appearing twice. (Have any other songs been top 3 at Christmas twice? If so the same applies to whatever was #4 in the week of its second Xmas top 3 appearance). Anyway, I shall start this on Saturday :D I am pretty sure that Band Aid re-released 'Do They Know It's Christmas' in 1985 and it got to number 3, unless I am just confused. December 7, 201113 yr Yes, I saw this just before you posted. Edited my original post :P Also, did the Pogues' 2005 entry of 'Fairytale Of New York' make the top 3?
December 7, 201113 yr Also, did the Pogues' 2005 entry of 'Fairytale Of New York' make the top 3? Yeah, but I can ignore that - I'd rather have The Pogues in it twice than bloody Westlife/Diana Ross :puke: (But seriously, Westlife and Diana unfortunately will have to be in it despite not being a Christmas top 3 hit).
December 7, 201113 yr I am pretty sure that Band Aid re-released 'Do They Know It's Christmas' in 1985 and it got to number 3, unless I am just confused. It wasn't formally re-released. There was just sufficient demand for shops to stock it again.
December 8, 201113 yr Do we know officially what the winners single will be? Is it a Gary Barlow penned track, Damien Rice 'Cannonball' or something completely different?
December 8, 201113 yr A better idea would be to do an "Ultimate Christmas #1s Rate" (1952-1961, 1962-1971, 1972-1981, 1982-1991, 1992-2001, 2002-2011) and provide YouTube links for the songs that people don't know. It would be a lot more interesting imo than doing the #1s of 1971-1980, then the top 3s of 1981-90, 91-2000 and 01-11. :) Otherwise I like the idea :cheer: Edited December 8, 201113 yr by Griff
December 8, 201113 yr Thursday update 4-7 Military Wives Choir 15-8 X Factor Winner 8-1 Nirvana 16-1 Alex Day * 16-1 Dirty Mavis * 25-1 Arianna Morgan 25-1 Cast of Jersey Shore * 25-1 McFly 33-1 Amy Winehouse 33-1 Justin Bieber 33-1 Smiths 40-1 Bar * - odds only quoted by one bookie so not properly representative Not a lot of change, Military Wives Choir a little bit shorter, X Factor winner a little bit longer. Alex Day (ex of Chartjackers) appears on the list for the first time courtsey of a quote from Hills. Quite a difference of opinion on Nirvana (odds from 4-1 to 8-1 available) and Ariana Morgan (mainly 10-1 to 14-1 but 25-1 in a place)
December 8, 201113 yr I'm up for the ultimate rate Christmas game. Could make it any themed Christmas song that reached the top 40 of any year? That'd clear out all X-Factor / Spice Girls / Rage Against the Machine etc. I'm personally sick to death with the media obsession with serving armed forces, but I'm pleased to see the song the wifies are singing was written by an Aberdonian - and it's not a song that has been done to death. Plus, it's also great to not see X Factor win. I reckon they released a week early this year on purpose so they have an excuse when it gets knocked off - think the XF bubble will burst very soon...and it can't come soon enough for me.

Again it's not a Christmas SONGS rate :P I said I'd expand it to the Christmas top 3 of each year as my original idea was a Christmas #1s rate but that'd have too few songs. Only a few of the Christmas #1s actually have anything to do with Christmas.
December 9, 201113 yr Thursday update 4-7 Military Wives Choir 15-8 X Factor Winner 8-1 Nirvana 16-1 Alex Day * 16-1 Dirty Mavis * 25-1 Arianna Morgan 25-1 Cast of Jersey Shore * 25-1 McFly 33-1 Amy Winehouse 33-1 Justin Bieber 33-1 Smiths 40-1 Bar * - odds only quoted by one bookie so not properly representative Not a lot of change, Military Wives Choir a little bit shorter, X Factor winner a little bit longer. Quite a difference of opinion on Nirvana (odds from 4-1 to 8-1 available) and Ariana Morgan (mainly 10-1 to 14-1 but 25-1 in a place) Are McFly even releasing anything? Or are they just basing this on their fanbase getting Dougie to win I'm A Celeb? They ALL own all of McFly's songs already, no doubt... :P
December 9, 201113 yr Friday update 4-6 Military Wives Choir 2-1 X Factor Winner 9-1 Nirvana 16-1 Alex Day * 16-1 Dirty Mavis * 25-1 Arianna Morgan 25-1 Cast of Jersey Shore * 25-1 McFly 40-1 Cast of The Only Way is Essex 40-1 Stacy Solomon 40-1 Wham! 40-1 Wombles 40-1 Amy Winehouse 40-1 Justin Bieber 40-1 Chas & Dave featuring Karl Pilkington 40-1 Smith & Burrows * 40-1 Smiths 50-1 Bar * - odds only quoted by one bookie so not properly representative Slight drifting for all the top 3 today,
December 9, 201113 yr What on earth are these? 16-1 Alex Day * 16-1 Dirty Mavis * 25-1 Arianna Morgan 50-1 Bar
December 9, 201113 yr Joey Barton (footballer for anyone that doesn't know) is trying to plan some sort of campaign to get a song to Christmas #1 Not sure how much influence he would have, but he seems pretty serious about getting involved judging by his tweets @Joey7Barton
December 10, 201113 yr Saturday update 4-6 Military Wives Choir 9-4 X Factor Winner 10-1 Nirvana 16-1 Dirty Mavis * 25-1 Arianna Morgan 25-1 Cast of Jersey Shore * 25-1 McFly 33-1 Alex Day * 40-1 Mariah Carey & Justin Bieber 40-1 Cast of The Only Way is Essex 40-1 Wombles 40-1 Stacy Solomon 40-1 Wham! 40-1 Chas & Dave featuring Karl Pilkington 40-1 Smith & Burrows * 40-1 Smiths 50-1 Bar * - odds only quoted by one bookie so not properly representative Military Wives Choir holding steady, more slight drifting for both the X-Factor winner and Nirvana. (Stan James go 8-1 anyone other than the two favourites). Nothing seems to be making much of a move from behind
December 11, 201113 yr Can't do a Sunday update, my internet feed not letting me to Oddschecker. Military Wives Choir were apparently on Strictly Come Dancing tonight, so there's a little more publicity to drive their cause forward.
December 11, 201113 yr Author You would have though marian and stacey would have shorter odds given mariah is top 10 on itunes and stacey is all over the ads with that song athe mo!
December 12, 201113 yr Scratch that - I found the rate game thread! Edited December 12, 201113 yr by richie
