I bet the other 2 songs are Iris and Don't Stop Believin' :(

Would not surprise me.

What they SHOULD do is write an original song, as they supposedly said they were going to months ago...

Yes. I thought Gary Barlow would have written a song for the winner.

Why is The X Factor (UK) cheapened so much that our winners are only good enough for releasing cover versions?

Look at the recent winner of Australian Idol (or whatever it's called). A young lad called Reece who used to live in the UK won the competition. He wasn't handed over a copy of Karaoke Party and asked to pick his fave track to cover. No, he gets an original song. As do all winners in other countries.

I do think it's sad that Simon Cowell has so much control to the point he didn't think an original song could be used. Maybe he thinks if it's a unknown song, or even a new song the British public won't "get" it. Does he really think the British are that stupid? :kink:

Madness!!! :P

If they use a cover, surely they make less money than if they get someone to write a new song even if it does sell 10-20% more because it's well known?

A few weeks ago they were saying on the radio and in the news that Fazer was going to produce for the X Factor winner.

Also, didn't Shayne Ward have an original song?

But I agree, I can't understand why they keep doing covers. I'm sure at Simon's own record label he has probably hundreds of original songs that haven't been used by an artist, and he has the money to pay a song-writer and a producer for one of their songs, or to make a new one. I can't understand why he does these covers all the time tbh. He could at least do a mash-up or a medley or something, just so it's a bit more interesting.

When Leon Jackson did a cover of 'When You Believe', that for me was like the Titanic hitting the iceberg. Then when Joe McElderry covered 'The Climb' (oh the irony when it progressed 02-01 in the charts!!! :manson: ) that was like the Titanic sinking into icy cold waters. Matt Cardle didn't stand a chance. Poor guy!!! :(

Eric, you're right. 'That's My Goal' was an original winners single and might explain why it sold so well (became a million selling single in less than 2 weeks). I expected Leona's 'A Moment Like This' to become a million seller but it stalled around 880k.

So it is more important to sell more rather than make more money? That's pure vanity then....

'That's My Goal' was not a 'New' Song. It was just new to the Charts.

It was a 2003 Westlife reject. Even they didn't want it.

Let's face it - had 'That's My Goal' not been by the 'X Factor' Winner, Shayne Ward

would have had a job to get it into the Top 40. It is weak as water.

From December 2005:,

"Sony BMG admitted to "Music Week" this week that "That's My Goal" has been hanging aroung the Sony/BMG offices for a while;

"It's a song we've had for quite a while and it's a great pop song that stands up on its own merits," says Sony BMG imprint Syco's vice president Sonny Takhar, who is confident the record can make it to the top spot, but acknowledges nothing can be taken for granted".

As a Pop Fan commented at the time:,

"But is the world aware that this was a song that none other than Westlife rejected for a soundtrack to the Special Olympics in Ireland 2003 for sounding "too wet" !!???"

It's a much better alternative than doing a cover. And what you say applies to lots of songs. UK #1 hit, Telephone by Lady Gaga is a Britney Spears reject. US #1 hit, Break Your Heart by Taio Cruz is a Cheryl Cole reject.

I heard his song last night, it's an upbeat song too. I think they used the instrumental of P!nk's Raise Your Glass for it, because it sounds the same

I'm not a Damien Rice fan (espec. not of this song) but he's definitely an artist that an X-Factor winner should not be covering. Actually, they shouldn't be covering anything 'cause what remains is always an insult to the original. X-Factor and anything related (Voice of ..) should just disappear.

It's pretty hard to 'insult' Miley Cyrus as she's pretty low on the musical ladder already and The Climb is one of her worst songs :kink:

But her version of "The Climb" was still a million per cent better than the X-Factor version

Tbh it wasn't. As much as I wish Olly had won (although I expect he wouldn't have had the same career) Jo's version is much more palatable than that Disney bitch.

Interestingly it seems like Coldplay will be doing the finale after all, I wonder what made them change their minds? :kink:

Oh it was. Go back and listen to the two, back to back. Forget the names on the records. Miley Cyrus' voice carries that song much much better. (And I say this as someone who rates both artists fairly similarly - in the "tolerable" category!)

A million percent better than 0 is still 0.

They've already confirmed they're not going on it twice. Why does their name keep coming up as a rumour? Or is this actually confirmed (i.e. by the X Factor producers) this time?

It's been confirmed:

Bit silly after they'd already 'confirmed' they weren't doing it...

Ah, I see. Well, I'm glad. It's not like Coldplay have any credibility to kill by appearing on the X Factor. I hope they perform Paradise and finally send it into the top 10.

I also wonder what made them (well, Will Champion and Guy Berryman anyway - the other two already wanted to go on XF) change their minds.
