Midweek Charts: Little Mix's Cannonball firing to top spot

Singles

Newly-crowned X Factor champions Little Mix are heading to the top of the UK singles chart this weekend, but their first-day sales are significantly down on those of 2010 champ Matt Cardle.

Their Syco-issued cover of Damien Rice’s Cannonball sold 68,800 copies by the end of business on Monday to put it around 38,000 sales in front of its nearest challenger, according to Official Charts Company data. However, its sales in the week so far are fewer than the lead Cardle commanded day one for his own winner’s single When We Collide a year ago.

Unusually, the X Factor winner’s single has been released two weeks before the Christmas chart, which is announced on December 25 this year, so, although Cannonball looks destined to lead this coming Sunday’s countdown, it will have to hang on another week to be the Christmas number one.

Rice’s original version of Cannonball is heading for a chart return on the back of Little Mix’s cover. Having made the Top 10 for the first time this year after being performed by X Factor contestant John Adams, the Atlantic-handled single returns as the 11th best seller of the week to date. Michael Buble leads albums midweeks (see separate story).

Lining up behind Little Mix, who beat Marcus Collins in last Sunday’s final, are two acts who featured on The X Factor over the weekend. Parlophone signings Coldplay look on course for their highest chart peak on the singles chart since Viva La Vida reached number one in 2008 with Paradise’s sales leaping 261% after they performed it on the ITV1 programme. Having ranked seventh on last Sunday’s chart, it is the new chart week’s second biggest seller.

Meanwhile, Syco artist Leona Lewis, who performed on the Saturday programme, is showing up as a new entry at three with Hurt, while 2009 runner-up Olly Murs’ Epic single Dance With Me Tonight, which climbed to one last weekend, is now down to four. Def Jam/Mercury’s former chart topper We Found Love by Rihanna featuring Calvin Harris completes the top five, dropping 4-5.

Mariah Carey’s All I Want For Christmas Is You is heading for the Top 10 for the first time since 1007 with the RCA-handled single moving 12-7 in the midweeks, while Warner Bros’s Fairytale Of New York by Pogues featuring Kirsty MacColl leads a wave of other festive singles progressing as it rises 15-13.

Midweek Charts: Looking like a Buble Christmas

Albums

With little more than a week to go Michael Buble is staking a serious claim to top the festive artist albums chart with his album Christmas’s sales rising week-on-week by 79%.

The Reprise/Warner Bros album, which was number two on last Sunday’s chart, has now overtaken Island’s Amy Winehouse album Lioness – Hidden Treasures to be the new chart week’s biggest seller, according to the Official Charts Company. Up to the end of business on Monday, it had sold 78,227 copies, around 29,000 sales ahead of Lioness sitting in second place.

As the penultimate chart before the Christmas Day one starts to take shape, Parlopone’s Coldplay are also in the ascendance. Like Buble, they performed on The X Factor over the weekend and are benefiting hugely with their album Xylo Myloto’s sales leaping 142% on the week to move it 8-3. There is also a big rise – 49% - for Westlife’s RCA album Greatest Hits after they performed on the same show and it moves 11-10 as a result.

Olly Murs’ second Epic album In Case You Didn’t Know is presently holding its position of four achieved on last Sunday’s chart, while Def Jam/Mercury Rihanna album Talk That Talk remains in fifth position.

In its 47th week on the survey, XL’s Adele album 21 continues apace with its weekly sales up 31%, leaving it in sixth position, while the midweek Top 10 is completed by RCA act Rebecca Ferguson’s Heaven (down 3-7), Asylum/Atlantic’s Ed Sheeran debut + (7-8) and Syco act One Direction’s Up All Night (9-9).

Some 3.8 million people tuned in to watch The Nation’s Favourite Bee Gees Sing on ITV1 last Friday night and as a result sales of the band’s Reprise/Rhino album Number One are up 741% on the week. Having debuted in 40th position last Sunday after little more than a day’s benefit from the programme, it is now up to 19.

The big Q4 albums are already in the market so there are no new entries showing up anywhere in the Top 50 midweeks, leaving the highest arrival down in 53rd position, courtesy of RCA act Jai McDowall’s Believe.

Midweek Charts update: Coldplay have the X Factor

10:50 | Thursday December 15, 2011

Source: MW

By Paul Williams

Coldplay’s Mylo Xyloto is enjoying its greatest demand at retail since it debuted at number one in the UK in October with the band’s X Factor appearance lifting week-on-week sales by 132%.

The Parlophone release currently stands as the week’s third top artist album of the week having sold 86,808 units up to the end of business on Wednesday, according to Official Charts Company Data. That is more copies than in any entire week since the album debuted at number one seven weeks ago with 208,343 sales.

The band’s first ever X Factor performance is also significantly boosting their fortunes in the singles market with Paradise, which was seven on last Sunday’s chart, the week so far’s second best seller after more than doubling its sales from a week ago. Only one other Coldplay single, their 2008 chart-topper Viva La Vida, has peaked higher in the UK.

The X Factor is further helping to determine who will be number one in the singles and artist albums countdowns this weekend. The 2011 winners Little Mix are more than 80,000 sales ahead of Paradise with their Syco-issued cover of Damien Rice’s Cannoball, although are a long way off reaching the 439,007 first-week sales of last year’s victor Matt Cardle’s introductory single When We Collide.

On albums Reprise/Warner Bros’s Michael Buble, who was on last Saturday’s ITV1 show, also has a convincing lead, around 47,000 sales ahead of Island release Lioness – Hidden Treasures by Amy Winehouse. Buble’s Christmas had sold 147,641 copies up to the close of business on Wednesday.

The X Factor’s 2009 runner-up Olly Murs will be in both the singles and albums top five on Sunday with his Epic single Dance With Me Tonight currently third for the week and album In Case You Didn’t Know only being outsold by Buble, Winehouse and Coldplay. Def Jam/Mercury’s Rihanna album Talk That Talk completes the albums top five at number five.

Its a shame it wont be the original version of it though.

LOL, when I said this people here wanted to kill me, but you absolutely right.

I cant decide what to think, I championed Little Mix from when they sang I'm Like A Bird. but Cannonball is one of my favourite songs and is the reason I brought the album 'O' which is my favourite album of all time.....
It will be interesting to see the boost Coldplay get, especially with them performing two songs, I reckon it will have convinced a lot of people to buy, top 3 this week?

I dont mind LM.... but their version of the song is awful

I dont mind LM.... but their version of the song is awful

Same here,

They are OK but their version is so bad and plastic and it's one of the best songs in the past 15 years from one of the best albums of the last decade, that's Y I don't like it but whatever.

LOL, when I said this people here wanted to kill me, but you absolutely right.

Exagerating, much? :P

I'd love to see Rebecca still in the top10 this week with the album, and the single still top 40 as well. Go Liverpooool ! :cheer:

Well the chart positions are a full gone conclusion, the intresting bit will be if we get any sales data with it.
