Is there really a physical version for the Pogues :o

Don't know mate. I don't put it together. Coldplay have only shifted 8000 a day since then, so that's Tuesday/Weds/Thurs...maybe Mike's missed some days. In which case it's more like 61/62,000.

7" Vinyl at £3.99 if you please! :o

I've definitely heard Florence + The Machine on the Big Top 40 Show before. You Got the Dirtee Love was #1 on it iirc, and they had to play You've Got the Love for about 6 months too (due to them including airplay in the lower bit of the chart).

That said, surely Shake It Out is more Heart-friendly than, say, Earthquake?

Some of that email is from 2009. But it still beggars the question...If they don't intend playing certain songs, then why are they in there in the first place? Airplay = We play it on our stations, surely to goodness?

Apparently the chart only includes airplay from the stations that broadcast the Big Top 40 Show. Which is a good way of pushing the Radio 1-only songs further down the chart.

Sorry Dave, had to remove the email - it contained personal data and I don't want us to get into trouble because of it.

Feel free to repost a summary of the emails if you want to though. Ta.

It's a good way to make it a MEANINGLESS LOAD OF SHIT you mean :P

Well, it's not TOTALLY meaningless. And in terms of the show itself, ignoring it's methods of compiling the chart, it's much better presented than the Radio 1 chart show (although I haven't listened to it in a long time, but that used to be the case anyway).

It's just SO confusing to understand how it works, and I swear they change the rules every few months too, especially with the top 10 they played at the beginning of the show. One week it'd be the iTunes top 10 at 4pm on Sunday, the next week it was the total iTunes sales over the week, the week after it'd be the iTunes chart as of Wednesday at mid-night. So confusing. I could never work it out.

It'd be a much better chart if they simply did an iTunes freeze of the top 40 on 4pm Sunday. It'd be MUCH easier for the audience to understand how it works, you wouldn't have airplay keeping Only Girl and I Gotta Feeling in the top 40 for 18 months, and you'd get some interesting songs cropping up at the lower-end of the top 40, but now they never chart because all the interesting songs obviously don't get airplay on Heart FM, etc.

I'm horrified that 2.5million actually listen to it. Are they not paying attention &/or are they just plain thick?

Looking at some figures for Radio One vs Independant Radio, the other day:

In 1986:

Radio One Top 40 11million

The Network Top 30 6million

In 1997:

Radio One Top 40 5million

The Pepsi Chart 5.5million

In 2005:

Radio One Top 40 2.5million

Hit40UK (Capital) 2million

Smash Hits Chart (Emap) .2million

The A List (Heart) .3million

2011:

Radio One Top 40 1million

Big Top 40 2.5million

Can't quite get my head around how Independant Radio, haven't lost as many listeners, as Radio One in 25 years. Independant Radio 6million in 1986 & 2.5 today. Radio One 11million in 1986 & 1million today.

They're probably not specifically listening to the chart show. Just turning the radio, and it's on. Like all those radio stations would probably get 2.5 million listeners combined whatever they were playing, if I'm making sense.

Most of the audience don't care about the charts. They're just listening to the songs, if you get what I mean. They just get in the car and turn Capital on, and it happens to be playing a chart at that time.

Plus, what gets played on the Big Top 40 Show is the most variety you'll ever hear on Heart FM tbh. And I've never heard them claim to be the official chart. They just say they are the most-listened to chart show (which they are).

I wouldn't say it's difficult to understand how it works. Currently it's Sun to Sat sales for the Top 10 for the week on iTunes for the 4-4.30pm countdown. Then you've got the 40-11 50/50 airplay for the week. So, thats the chart for the week & the only part with any sense at all. The 6pm Lockdown on the Live iTunes Top 10 is the bit, where they try to be ahead of Radio One, but because they don't include multipli versions of songs together, you end up with the wrong number one...like Flo Rida's "Good Feeling", which definately wasn't really at the top at any point.

Over in Australia, they broadcast the "Live" iTunes Top 40, but on that all multipli versions are linked together & it's a good show.

Yeah. I get your drift. Guess it means that Radio One lost 6million between 1986 & 1997, because of the 1993 Radio axing of all the old tribe of presenters, or everybody hated Bruno Brookes & Mark Goodier.

Yeah, like what they do on Australia would be good.

I've seen so many weird things happen on the Big Top 40 Show. Like when there were the two versions of Forget You in the top 10, they'd play and chart both.

And there was another week (when Pass Out and Telephone were at the top of the charts), where a massive bunch of songs got deleted from the iTunes feed for some reasons, including a few in the top 10. Now THAT was a mess.

It's also messy when, either, a song that was played in the #11-#40 region climbs back into the top 10 at 6pm, or when a song that was higher than the #11 drops out of the top 10. As then in the first scenario, you get a song charting twice, and in the 2nd scenario, you get a song that's actually been very popular that week, not appearing in the chart.

So I think the chart is quite poor overall, but if they had a more sensible way of compiling the chart, I wouldn't mind it.
