Moved to the Pop forum, not really chart forum material.

20 years ago I was -6 years old, so I much prefer the pop music of now to be honest :P

Seriously once you look past JLS, Justin Bieber, One Direction and Bruno Mars there are some very good pop songs being made these days :D

I wasn't around to experience the music being released 20 years ago so I couldn't possibly tell you if it was better or not.

The only problem I have is that there are now no real personalities in music these days :(

I think pop music is generally pretty good, looking at the YTD top 20, there's been quite a few future classics released this year

as for the 80s/90s, of course there have been many classics from this period which I don't will ever be beaten, but there did seem to be a lot more variety - something that was mainly lacking in current pop music

*Cough* LMFAO *Cough

*Cough* LMFAO *Cough

They are the best, their year defining hit Party Rock Anthem was totally original and totally re-invented the face of music

When I first heard it (on Capital before it got big) I actually thought 'wow! this is really different' Apart from the very generic lyrics, it's actually quite unique! :P

LMFAO made ONE party song. Sexy And I Know It is a bit of a joke too far, but I don't blame them for Party Rock Anthem at all. It's just the end result of a long line of songs of that type all culminated into one.

And pop's moving away from that sort of thing. Recently, seeing uninspired trash fail in the charts (most notably Gotta Be You, UGH) has made me feel more confident that 2012 will move us on the up for pop music. 2011 was just a dip, a slight dip, but I don't think that we're at dreck levels yet, nor are we going anywhere near. There are still classics being produced, and there always will be.

There'll still be those who say this year is the worst ever for pop music, but I think we've got over the autotune club banger era that is so derided.

I think 2012 will be really exciting. We could have a big resurgence of genres that had practically non-existent success in 2010/11, perhaps indie/rock or R&B? One definite change is that boybands have fallen, and with Little Mix's XF win we may see a rise of girlbands, StooShe especially could be ones to watch.

Indie or rock coming to the forefront would be really exciting, it's been a while. Maybe if Somebody I Used To Know gets big, that'll pave the way. A lot of the previous big hitters tried this year and really didn't live up to their previous success though, so we'd have some new faces too. 2010 was fairly devoid of rock being released altogether, and I can't think of anyone making a comeback off the top of my head.

RnB was fairly big in 2010, I'd say it's got a few years before it really comes round again. Definitely looking forward to boybands being changed into girlbands, hopefully it'll really happen hugely and we get a Wanted to Little Mix's JLS. Or something. I can't GET StooShe though. Maybe if 2012 was looking to be RnB heavy, maybe, but I can't see them slotting in. Also, maybe I need their material to grow on me.

I meant proper R&B like perhaps Fantasia/Chrisete Michele. Then again that's never had success apart from maybe the odd Mary J Blige minor fluke hit now and again so it's doubtful.

About this.

Firstly, what do you mean by "personalities"? I think there are personalities in music at the moment. Granted, maybe not as much as the 70's and 80's though (and from memory, not as much as in the late 90's/early 00's), but I still think there are some.

And secondly, why is that important though? I admit, I do like my favourite artists being in the media sometimes, and interviews, etc. would be more interesting, but it's not really that important. I'd rather good songs than lots of beef, media frenzy, etc.

I agree with other people that I have high hopes for 2012. I've been really disappointed with this year, so much, but it can only get better from now. :)

I can't really help with how music today compares to 20 years ago, since I was in a womb then. But I think most people prefer music from when they were growing up. Obviously, there's lots of exceptions, but as a general rule.

The next big craze will clearly be synthesized banjo funk.

Honestly though I think we'll see more variety next year. Club songs will still be dominant but I think more indie stuff and a bit of RnB will creep back. Perhaps Azealia Banks will lead to tuneless urban music taking the charts by storm or maybe rock music will come back for no reason in particular. WHO KNOWS.

Anyway, more on topic. I think pop music is in great shape. Maybe the charts aren't but there will always be quality music even if you have to dig a little deeper to find it these days. 2011 was a dip in quality in my opinion, but 2009 was the best time in pop since 2003/04 for me and 2010 was also amazing.

Word. Those two years don't get enough love. Well, 2009 does, but 2010, I thought I was about the only one who loved that year. There was a lot of weak stuff in the year-end top 40, but a lot of the middling stuff was class pop music. One example, and I'm not going to use Alexis, why would I do that  , that kind of sums up the year for me, is McFly's Shine A Light. It's far better than a lot of their other stuff, had a brilliant chart run for its peak and the fact it's McFly, is pop/RnB in genre with Taio added, and it shows the strength of the year's middling hits.

The type of RnB getting success around then was also quite good, considering I'm not a fan of some other types of RnB (proper RnB has to be an acquired taste :P)

A lot of the greatest songs I've found in 2011 are the ones I've had to dig deeper for. I know so much more music, yet it feels like it's on a lower quality curve to everything that's come before.

Ok, I do agree that there is more variety due to the Internet. However, when you see artists that keep pumping half a** material into the charts I feel like the bar is steadily declining. I mean the artists 20 years ago were quality acts. Now it just seems like a lot of the artists just seem to be pumping out as much music as possible with hopes of landing one hit. Don't get me wrong. There are songs that are great, and artists that have a lot of talent. Just feel like they could put a little more time into their music.

JLS are no worse than some of the shite that they've been surrounded by recently. Bruno Mars actually writes some damn good pop songs (cough, Grenade) so I wouldn't put him in that company at all just because he's got a knob.

Exactly, anyway looning LMFAO makes the degrading of Bruno Mars irrelevant anyway.

Also I don't get the hate for JLS, I honestly don't think they're as bad as a heap of other acts in the generic stakes.

Have a feeling Bruno mars doesn't write his own stuff. What happened to JT. J bieber is great, I just think he came out with a Christmas album way too early. Artists don't do that till they're way in their career. Which takes me back to my point. Artists pump as much music out there tryin to see if on gets a hit. I'll give to to Bruno Mars though, he puts out some quality work.
