December 27, 201113 yr Author I know Jessie J and Bruno Mars albums are both £5 and Westlife has been discounted. Might buy Bruno then, thought it would be cheap, good pop album. The vaccines is a decent debut and if you mean Watch the Throne then yeh its quality!
December 27, 201113 yr Some people are overreacting to the problems that HMV are having. Trust me, for the moment at least they're NOT going bust. Maybe not, but there's no way it can continue for that much longer. It can't compete any more and won't be able to, it's going nowhere, impossible to recover, it's not going to be making a profit anytime soon and the company has no value. It'll be like Fopp where only the profitable stores are kept open, and they kept open 6 out of over 60. It probably will exist, but not like it is at the moment, it can't continue at all.
December 27, 201113 yr Doesn't ship for free outside the UK :( well, it didn't expect that anyway.... -_-

December 27, 201113 yr I think HMV will continue, they will have to adapt further of course but I don't see them simply disappearing. There are still another 5 years left for the physical CD album I'd have thought.
December 27, 201113 yr but they have other successful departments too, which can make up for the losses in the music section.... Not really. Music, DVD and game sales are not just down, but they're also going ever more towards the downloaded product, and they'll never be able to compete with either supermarkets or online on price. They've done OK in branching out but they did it at least 5 years too late. They've got a decent technology department but it's not it's anything new or different, and its target market all have smartphones and will be able to check within 30 seconds what the price is online. There's nothing at all to suggest that entertainment sales will be making any substantial increase anytime soon, and their prices will only continue to drop, but the wages, rent, debt interest and utility bills certainly won't be. The only profitable part of HMV is HMV Live and they're trying to sell it in order to keep the rest of it afloat.
December 28, 201113 yr The stuff in HMV is massively over-priced. It is better to sell a lot of something at a competative price, than far less of something at an extortionate price. Sadly, that simple idea has by-passed HMV. As far as I'm concerned, if it folds, (eventually), it is its own fault - for selling things at such rip off prices. I have a brother, who will not use Amazon.uk. Instead, he thinks it is cool to go in HMV, to shop. In early December, he bought a Box Set of the 1970's TV Series, 'Department S'. HMV charged him £70 for it. At the same time, he could have got it from Amazon.uk, for £36! He bought an £8 Horror DVD, at the same time. Amazon.uk were selling it for £4! In both cases, Postage Free. So - my brother paid £78, at HMV, for 2 items, that he could have got for £40 at Amazon.uk. HMV are their own worst enemies, as most people are not as stupid, as my brother! Edited December 28, 201113 yr by zeus555
December 28, 201113 yr I'd miss walking into HMV and picking up 2 items for £10 which often predates a similar amazon discount
December 28, 201113 yr My local HMV is one of these 'refurbished with technology on tables' stores. It's useless. It is a giant store but the ONLY music it has is the UKtop40 singles and it's own peculiar interpretation of the albums chart, choosing to frequently replace certain albums (Florence/bruno/steps/saturdays i've seen so far) with something from the top 3!? If we're really lucky they will put a cardboard stand with 'future hits' or 'brand new' releases... This notion of albums getting to the '2-for-£10' section and remaining available after their chart run is basically the stuff my dreams are made of ;) Ps; So far for EVERY One Direction release they replaced the whole second half of the top40 with copies of TWMYB, GBY and their album.

We are lucky we have such a big store in town. That said often you have to hunt for the 2 for 10 in the back catalogue sections as they only put the more mainstream stuff on display up front (and that display disappered in December for Christmas 'offers' and stuff like Gaga was removed from the offer). So you'll find stuff like The Naked and the Famous on sale in their little section where the Katy Perry and Rihanna will be at the front of the store making it hard to browse the entire offer unless you are specifically looking and get a good surprise. And stuff you expect to be in the promotion isn't. So Albums from this october can be in the offer but James Blake and Clare Maguire are still full price a year on.

There are still another 5 years left for the physical CD album I'd have thought. I think the future is brighter than that - ISTM there's gonna be a market for physical music formats (albums at least) for a long time to come. You can't have sleeve notes with a download, nor wrap it & put it in an Xmas stocking... :P
December 28, 201113 yr The stuff in HMV is massively over-priced. It is better to sell a lot of something at a competative price, than far less of something at an extortionate price. Only if they're making a profit on each item, which they don't, therefore they can't. They have far more overheads than any online business such as Amazon and can't afford loss leaders like a supermarket can. I agree they don't help themselves at times but the main reasons are out of their control. It's a completely unsustainable type of business, nothing to do with how HMV is run.

Not everything is overpriced though...for instance the new inbetweeners dvd was only 9.99 in the first 2 weeks of release whereas it was 13.97 in tesco and most other places i know on the high street.
December 28, 201113 yr Also, you have to take into account that shops have far more overheads than internet based retailers. For instance HMV.com is actually alot cheaper than HMV the shop in a lot of cases. I, for one, would be gutted if HMV ever folded as Im sure most members here would. I try not to shop online too much as its killing the high street but I did do a bit at Christmas. I bought the Harry Potter complete 8 film set for £25 at HMV.com and it was £32.99 in HMV. Oh and regarding the HMV sale...its shit! Sorry, but I go every year and I was so dissapointed this year :(

Hmm, that sounds kind of the way HMV used to be here! All the mainstream stuff at the front, which is quite fair considering that is what will make them money, and then an unbelievable selection of albums old and new towards the back of the store. How I miss those days! Now the last two thirds of the store are dedicated to ipods/ipads/i-this/i-thats. Are the two for £10 offers the same in every store? Or are they selected locally? I'm thinking of heading into Birmingham to find a HMV that actually has products. If I succeed then my answer to the original question is that I would try to get my hands on Diana Vickers and a physical copy of Paloma Faith's album! But that's a little optimistic.

I would imagine it will be the same albums in every store, however the bigger stores will have a larger selection of albums so going to a bigger store may well increase the number of albums that are available to choose from. :)
December 28, 201113 yr I havent bought anything from the sale. Didnt think it was very good and a lot of stuff is miles cheaper from other internet sites such as amazon.
