December 28, 201113 yr I ended up buying Katy Perry- Teenage Dream Ed Sherran Matt Cardle Alnost everything else I would have bought I already had
December 28, 201113 yr I find that the pull of the sale is that if you've gone on a shopping trip and see something in there you're tempted by going cheap, you'll pick it up. Their share of the market for planned purchases will be far lower than casual buys at this time of the year.
December 28, 201113 yr I bought Coldplay's new album (not in the sales but I wanted it anyway) and Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds. The HMV nearest to me in Bath is quite big! They have three floors. The films and posters and TV box sets are in the basement, on the walk-in floor there is stuff like mainstream chart stuff, then older mainstream stuff, and then alternative stuff as well as headphones and iPods etc. On the top floor there's loads more albums and posters with a real mix of stuff, so I'm quite lucky! Bath stopped doing singles last year, but much smaller shops like in Bristol (Cribbs Causeway) and Shrewsbury still stocked singles when I last checked earlier this year. It's weird. The Cribbs shop is not that small now (one floor I grant you) but the one in Bristol City Centre has 2 big floors - I find the Bath store quite small as although it is on a couple of floors, they are small floors. We should just be glad we still have HMV I guess.
December 28, 201113 yr We should just be glad we still have HMV I guess. Definitely - There are only two HMVs in the whole of my county... Swindon and Salisbury, but it's much quicker to nip over to Bath if the supermarkets don't have what I'm after. Edited December 28, 201113 yr by cookie_monster
December 28, 201113 yr Author The day hmv closes it will be the end of record stores altogether.though i cant help but think someone else would see a market and replace them!
December 28, 201113 yr The stuff in HMV is massively over-priced. It is better to sell a lot of something at a competative price, than far less of something at an extortionate price. Sadly, that simple idea has by-passed HMV. As far as I'm concerned, if it folds, (eventually), it is its own fault - for selling things at such rip off prices. I have a brother, who will not use Amazon.uk. Instead, he thinks it is cool to go in HMV, to shop. In early December, he bought a Box Set of the 1970's TV Series, 'Department S'. HMV charged him £70 for it. At the same time, he could have got it from Amazon.uk, for £36! He bought an £8 Horror DVD, at the same time. Amazon.uk were selling it for £4! In both cases, Postage Free. So - my brother paid £78, at HMV, for 2 items, that he could have got for £40 at Amazon.uk. HMV are their own worst enemies, as most people are not as stupid, as my brother! Are you actually a dribbling idiot? Amazon do not have anywhere near the same amount of overheads that HMV have and thus are able to charge lower prices because their costs are lower. They have no retail rent to pay and the excess heat/light/wages/taxes etc that comes with that. Plus their CDs and DVDs often ship from the Channel Islands and through the VAT loophole which makes online retailers 20% cheaper before anything else is taken into account. HMV, unlike Tesco et al do not have Petrol Stations, Booze sections and general groceries to allow them to sell all of their entertainment goods as loss leaders. I shall explain loss leaders for you as you appear to be thick. A loss leader is a product that is sold at a price that is so low the company makes a loss on every unit sold, these are used to draw customers into the store in the hope that they will purchase more than just the loss leader and thus lead to a rise in sales. Loss leaders tend to be the things Supermarkets shout about having on special offer, especially at Christmas when they are trying to get you to do your Christmas shop with them and thus drop £150+ in a single visit. Only if they're making a profit on each item, which they don't, therefore they can't. They have far more overheads than any online business such as Amazon and can't afford loss leaders like a supermarket can. I agree they don't help themselves at times but the main reasons are out of their control. It's a completely unsustainable type of business, nothing to do with how HMV is run. Basically this. The high street is fighting a losing battle with itself and the government who are doing all they can to send us into a double dip recession that would be so bad that even the Supermarkets would start to have issues. Also, you have to take into account that shops have far more overheads than internet based retailers. For instance HMV.com is actually alot cheaper than HMV the shop in a lot of cases. I, for one, would be gutted if HMV ever folded as Im sure most members here would. I try not to shop online too much as its killing the high street but I did do a bit at Christmas. I bought the Harry Potter complete 8 film set for £25 at HMV.com and it was £32.99 in HMV. Oh and regarding the HMV sale...its shit! Sorry, but I go every year and I was so dissapointed this year :(HMV.com is cheaper because they ship from the Channel Islands and you do not pay any VAT on your purchase which can lead to a good 20% deduction.
December 28, 201113 yr I went into my local HMV and was saddened by the lack of CDs. It is a two-floor store and the upstairs has been filled with DVDs from as long as I can remember. In the last few years, the downstairs has been filled with more DVDs, computer games and iPods so CDs have been sacrificed. But it took the biscuit when I walked in the store yesterday and the area where compilations and non-chart CDs used to be was taken over by even more iPod gadgets etc - despite a store specialising in that just across the high street. So now the only CDs in my local HMV are chart ones. -_-
December 29, 201113 yr Today I got: Jay Z & Kanye West - Watch The Throne (£5) Nirvana - In Utero (£3)

I think the government passed a law before xmas which means that the channel island cannot be used as a tax loophole anymore which means more expensive cds!! :(
December 29, 201113 yr I dont know whether or not to buy Mylo Xyloto. Not convinced by the samples but I love coldplay.
December 29, 201113 yr Author Its great, go get it....you will end up buying it in Feb once airplay for Charlie Brown kicks in and they perform at the Brits with Rihanna!
December 29, 201113 yr Is there any need for rudeness? I think the government passed a law before xmas which means that the channel island cannot be used as a tax loophole anymore which means more expensive cds!! :( For as long as people insist on being utter morons, there exists a need for someone to be rude to help point out that they are ill-informed and should probably gain some background knowledge on the subject at hand before acting like they know it all. This particular Buzzjack forum is particularly bad for it, followed by perspectives. Although there one of the mod's tends to lead the firing squad. The loophole is open until the end of the Tax year when the new Tax statue comes into effect.
December 29, 201113 yr Author Okay but i still dont think there is any need for rudeness, not everyone knows everything about everything but it doesnt mean they wont give an 'opinion' on an internet forum.

I've ordered substantial amounts from HMV and they've come from the Channel Islands in the past. Although it has been a while since I online ordered from them.
