December 29, 201113 yr Author This was the year when downloads were first added, week ending 8 April, as I remember Gnarls Barkley was the first track at #1 on downloads only.
December 29, 201113 yr God 2006 no1s got better as the year went on...and what great sales for Crazy in the week it sold 194k...imagine how much it would have sold now...although maybe it sold loads because it was an oa/os release??
December 29, 201113 yr This was the year when downloads were first added, week ending 8 April, as I remember Gnarls Barkley was the first track at #1 on downloads only. Downloads were first added in 2005 (IIRC when 'Amarillo' was number one) , this was the year they were eligible one week before the physical release which saw lots of huge climbs!
December 29, 201113 yr So downloads were added around when Madonna Hung up and U2 vertigo were out but only after the release date , is that right?
December 29, 201113 yr Author Downloads were first added in 2005 (IIRC when 'Amarillo' was number one) , this was the year they were eligible one week before the physical release which saw lots of huge climbs! aha... that's right its all coming back to me now. I knew that was some sort of new rule added at the time.
December 29, 201113 yr 'Crazy' was the first #1 on download sales only. Then I think Viva La Vida was the first download-only #1 to never receive a physical release?
December 29, 201113 yr Author So downloads were added around when Madonna Hung up and U2 vertigo were out but only after the release date , is that right? Mark is right, just consulted my folder it was week ending 23rd April when Tony Christie was #1
December 29, 201113 yr Ahh yeah they used to do a download chart seperately near the end of 2004 when Hung Up and Vertigo dominated it weeks before they were released on cd. Scott Mills used to do the countdown on radio 1 on a wednesday night at 6pm...can anyone remember what the first download chart no1 was in september 2004?? :P
:P A live version of "Flying without Wings" by WESTLIFE Yes all sales were counted for Y/E chart purposes but the weekly count (and thus chart position) had to be linked to a physical release.
December 29, 201113 yr Sorry if this is a silly question, but when did downloads start? Like I know people could do it illegally for ages, but when was the first legal online store (like iTunes, Amazon, etc.) that sold digital downloads? I remember someone saying Crazy in Love by Beyonce was downloaded a TON, but that was back in 2003 (I think). Although I guess they wouldn't have started doing charts for them straight away. Gosh, sales were awful in 2006. The songs, however, are amazing. I wish I followed the charts back then. I used to be obsessed with so many of these songs. I'd've been stanning for something like mad every week. Now I hate nearly everything that gets near the top of the charts.
December 29, 201113 yr The only chart rule in 2006 I didn't approve of was the deleting of singles at the discretion of the record company. Seeing a track like 'Crazy' have a chart run along the lines of 01-01-01-01-01-01-01-01-01-02-05-OUT was just embarrassing for the UK charts. Same happened with 'Maneater' iirc only that song disappeared from #10. -_- Thankfully the compilers saw sense (eventually) and stopped this farce in January 2007.
December 29, 201113 yr If I recall "Crazy" by Gnarls Barkley was the first number 1 to be caught by both rules that were introduced in 2006 - the record was the first to reach number 1 on downloads alone under the "one week before physical release" rule and the first number 1 to be removed under the "two weeks after deletion" rule.
December 29, 201113 yr A live version of "Flying without Wings" by WESTLIFE Yes all sales were counted for Y/E chart purposes but the weekly count (and thus chart position) had to be linked to a physical release. Correct...well done, thought no-one would get that!!
December 29, 201113 yr yeh those were a joke, maneater and crazy could have had MLJ style chart runs, i guess the occ were worried about the affects oif downloads!!
:lol:Some acts had been selling downloads since the 90s via their own website but the first legal download store in the UK was something like My Coke Downloads in (I think) 2002 followed by sites such as Dotmusic and 7 Digital. 7 Digital began in January 2004 and was followed by iTunes in the UK in June 2004. A download test chart began on June 26, 2004 with "Bam Thwok" by The Pixies at number 1 with the first official download chart being broadcast on Radio 1 on September 4, 2004. The number one was "Flying Without Wings (Live) by Westlife.

Thanks! :D Mad to think that was happening in the 90's! :o I feel like I missed out on a lot, since in my family we were always VERY behind with technology. We didn't even have the Internet in our house until like 2004 I think.
