In August this missed in both Countries 09 WE DON'T NEED MONEY TO HAVE A GOOD TIME - SUBWAYS the Rock trio from Welwyn Garden City searched for a 6th top 50 single in September, but didn't get it, because it missed totally 10 SAVING A LIFE - CLIFF RICHARD & FREDA PAYNE Cliff, that well known British Indian put out an album, where he joined with Soul greats. This single featured Freda Payne from Detroit, but in October it didn't do a thing 11 MONARCHY OF ROSES - RED HOT CHILLI PEPPERS the Los Angeles band looked for a 25th top 50 single, But they didn't get it, because in November it failed to dent the top 100 12 HAPPY THIS CHRISTMAS - MICK HUCKNALL that ginger bloke from Simply Red issued this single, this month. It didn't sell a lot of downloads, but it did make the physical sales top 10 Just before we tackle this week's chart, let's shoot back! In December 1980 (the 30th December to be exact) a chart was compiled but nobody actually saw it. So, what did it look like really? Well this was that missing top 40, 3 weeks after John Lennon's death: 40 41 MY GIRL - ROD STEWART 39 43 I AM THE BEAT - THE LOOK 38 35 I'M COMING OUT - DIANA ROSS 37 30 I COULD BE SO GOOD FOR YOU - DENNIS WATERMAN 36 33 LOOKING FOR CLUES - ROBERT PALMER 35 37 IF I COULD ONLY MAKE YOU CARE - MIKE BERRY 34 40 RUNAROUND SUE - RACEY 33 36 LORRAINE - BAD MANNERS 32 27 ROCK N' ROLL AIN'T NOISE POLLUTION - AC/DC 31 34 BLUE MOON - SHOWADDYWADDY 30 32 DECEMBER WILL BE MAGIC AGAIN - KATE BUSH 29 31 WHO'S GONNA ROCK YOU - THE NOLANS 28 29 IT'S HARD TO BE HUMBLE - MAC DAVIS 27 28 THIS WRECKAGE - GARY NUMAN 26 26 DON'T WALK AWAY - ELECTRIC LIGHT ORCHESTRA 25 25 CELEBRATION - KOOL AND THE GANG 24 20 THE TIDE IS HIGH - BLONDIE 23 21 DO YOU FEEL MY LOVE - EDDY GRANT 22 23 TOO NICE TO TALK TO - THE BEAT 21 24 DO NOTHING/MAGGIE'S FARM - THE SPECIALS 20 22 LONELY TOGETHER - BARRY MANILOW 19 17 NEVER MIND THE PRESENTS - BARRON KNIGHTS 18 19 OVER THE RAINBOW-YOU BELONG TO ME (MEDLEY) - MATCHBOX 17 18 LOVE ON THE ROCKS - NEIL DIAMOND 16 14 LADY - KENNY ROGERS 15 16 TO CUT A LONG STORY SHORT - SPANDAU BALLET 14 12 LIES/DON'T DRIVE MY CAR - STATUS QUO 13 15 FLASH - QUEEN 12 11 BANANA REPUBLIC - BOOMTOWN RATS 11 13 RABBIT - CHAS & DAVE 10 10 RUNAWAY BOYS - STRAY CATS 09 08 EMBARRASSMENT - MADNESS 08 06 DE DO DO DO DE DA DA DA - THE POLICE 07 05 SUPER TROUPER - ABBA 06 07 ANT MUSIC - ADAM & THE ANTS 05 09 IMAGINE - JOHN LENNON 04 03 STOP THE CAVALRY - JONA LEWIE 97,500 03 02 STARTING OVER - JOHN LENNON 98,000 02 01 THERE'S NO ONE QUITE LIKE GRANDMA - ST WINIFRED'S SCHOOL CHOIR 100,000 01 04 HAPPY CHRISTMAS (WAR IS OVER) - PLASTIC ONO BAND 102,000 It was indeed that close in 1980's hidden chart covering 22nd to 27th Dec & you only had 4 days sales, with no shops open on either Christmas Day or Boxing Day & of course (thankfully) no damn Sunday trading in those lovely days! Those Woolworths sales keeping "Grandma" in the top 3, without them they only made #3 & John would of knock his self off the top, more than once through Dec & Jan...Oh yeah & Jona Lewie would have taken top spot, on the 29th Dec to 3rd Jan period, had John survived. Yep, things would have been certainly different. Credit to Mike, who took the MRIB figures & translated them to Woolworths missed sales. December 30, 201113 yr 103k for Paradise? Woah! I don't think Mylo Xyloto has sold over a million as it would need to clear 140k this week to do that (very unlikely).
December 30, 201113 yr The year to date chart above will have sales from Sunday 25th December included, so it be entirely different from the Radio 1 version transmitted tomorrow afternoon at 4pm with Tom Deacon. Regarding the YTD chart chat thread tomorrow, I'm away late afternoon, not sure if other chart mods are around, but if anyone wants to do the thread topic for it, check with the chart mods first whoever is online before creating a topic for it.
December 30, 201113 yr Just before we tackle this week's chart, let's shoot back! In December 1980 (the 30th December to be exact) a chart was compiled but nobody actually saw it. So, what did it look like really? Well this was that missing top 40, 3 weeks after John Lennon's death: You might want to rephrase that!
December 30, 201113 yr Author You might want to rephrase that! Oh dear & I didn't even spot it! Sort of ill-unintentional remark, that one of todays chart presenters might fluff up on!
December 31, 201113 yr Cheers for the charts Dave. Good to see the chart from 1980. Shame the BMRB didn't compile a chart for this week in 1980, it would have given John Lennon a hat trick of number 1 singles.
December 31, 201113 yr So after missing out on #1 at the last minute, "Champion" is now going to be relegated to #41 for the year in its last week. Unluckiest song of the year?
December 31, 201113 yr So after missing out on #1 at the last minute, "Champion" is now going to be relegated to #41 for the year in its last week. Unluckiest song of the year? 'Moves Like Jagger'? :P
December 31, 201113 yr 'Moves Like Jagger'? :P That was massively successful outside the UK as well so doesn't really count.
January 1, 201213 yr Think Champion will hold on at 40 - Lego House and Cannonball are probably too far behind to make up the gap in two days. Great that it looks like the whole Top 40 will be above 400K as well as the Top 20 over 500K! :D
