In a few words, an label in this case Madge's one has achieve an agreement with Clear Chanel, that they will play Madge's new single every hour on more than 850 radio stations in USA, which weekly have more than 100m listeners. The same deal has did Rihanna and Lady Gaga, that's why they get huge radio updates in the first 3 days. Britney with Hold It Against Me didn't had that deal, but she is still got huge first days in audience, thanks to public which has request the song without being basically pushed to listen that song every hour.

Thanks for clarifying, I'd never heard of this. Isn't it effectively chart fixing? Are labels just basically paying radio stations to play their songs?

As long as you go public about telling the radio to play your song it's fine. When you don't it's called payola and is illegal (example: Jennifer Lopez - Do It Well IIRC) but I'd imagine those radio stations would say they were "sponsored" to play the song when they did play it).

Why are the Whitney entries not on the list of biggest increases...?

Nice lead for Adele now and heading towards the 150 million mark again :D I hope this can get a few weeks at #1 on the airplay chart - Someone Like You was only #1 for two weeks, Rolling In The Deep had six.

If the Grammys affect the relevant download week for next Wednesday's Hot 100 (I never know what days count to which chart, it's too confusing) and Adele performs Set Fire To The Rain then she couldf easily get enough of a download boost to knock Kelly off #1. If not I think it could be back at #1 the following week.

For the Hot 100, sales are Monday to Sunday, and (I think) airplay is Wednesday to Tuesday and the Hot 100 is compiled on Wednesday, we see the chart online on Thursday.

Wow! What happened with Do It Well then? I never heard about that! :o Did someone in the press find out about the payola then? And do you remember what the general public reaction to the situation was?

Well Sony basically bought a lot of airplay in the early 2000s. They bribed radio DJs/stations to play the songs, even going as far as staging fake competitions and giving the prizes to the DJs and they did it with J-Lo quite a lot I think. I don't know how it was found out but it was anyway and they stopped. It wasn't a big public scandal IIRC but I remember a few people laughing that even with all the help Do It Well got it still couldn't go top 20!
