Just wondering if anyone else has noticed a change with this trend, there was a time when you couldn't hear singers breath between lines, or verses, or at all really. Now you can hear clearly singers breathing heavily, taking noisy deep breaths where they wish to, which in my opinion ruins a song. Notable culprits are Mike Posner, Adele and possibly worst of all (although she is not a 'star' as she didn't win) Janet Devlin off X-Factor. What's with it?? Do they think it sounds good because to me it sounds like a mess!

Trust me, there are no bigger hits with heavy breathing than Lil Louis' "French Kiss" and Jane Birkin & Serge Gainsbourg's "Je t'aime moi non plus" in the UK. They're literally sex on records!

I've noticed this, too. I guess it's to make it sound more natural.

After all, if you are singing along, you have to breathe occasionally... :)

I've noticed this too and it's bloody annoying.

If I wanted to hear Darth Vadar in these songs, id switch the movie channel on.

There was a time when producers would remove any evidence of breathing, just because they could, and they thought it sounded messy. I remember one of Westlife saying that their producers liked them to record one line at a time, and get that absolutely perfect, and then it would be pieced together. That gives a very polished finish, but it doesn't sound very natural.

These days, the fashion seems to be for a more naturalistic production, with whole sections of the song being recorded in one go. Some producers probably go in and delete any breathing sounds, but you can bet they were there when it was recorded.

I don't really care about breathing sounds, in fact I rarely even notice them unless someone points them out. When you sing you do have to breathe. It makes no sense to cut breathing sounds out of a recording because it's not going to sound like that live.

I agree you have to breathe, but it is possible to breathe silently, when you're talking to someone, you don't hear a huge darth vader (good example!) breathing impression from them! I'm beginning to notice it less and less, purely because it's on every song released!!

I never noticed it with Janet, and she has over 1,000 plays on my last.fm. :P It was Frankie Cocozza I noticed it more with, especially on his performance of The A Team.

Wow, I listen to Mike Posner alot (not Adele or Janet) and haven't noticed any breathing sounds. Maybe it's because i've not been listening out for them, though, is it noticeable on Cooler Than Me/Please Don't Go/Bow Chicka Wow Wow/With Ur Love?

In Cooler Than Me it's very noticeable, everytime he sings 'You're Cooler Than Me' listen out for the huge breath intake!

I think it's like blinking. You don't notice it but when someone points it out, you can hear the breaths really clearly for a while afterwards. Aside from that though, I don't notice or care.

Just noticed this. So Janet isn't a star cause she didn't win? OK, so JLS, One Direction, Cher Lloyd, Diana Vickers, etc. aren't stars either?

While it's debatable, particularly with Diana, you could argue for it because they've had #1 singles. Has Janet?

A fair point you bring up. :P I suppose she's not a star on the same scale, but in a way, she is still a star.
