Will Young performed on Graham Norton tonight

On his *show*, I hope you mean.

might give his album a bit of a boost.

Should do.

There is no hiding Madonna is flopping with this 'comeback' single. It isnt doing well at all, regardless of radio or tv, for this 'comeback' single from Madonna, this isnt doing well.

Hopefully Turn Me On goes top 10 this week on iTunes at some point, then officially next Sunday.

HA HA, I meant on his show

Why would she need to do that? the only country it isn't performing well in is the UK.

Everywhere else its performed well.

Did Britney Spears class Till the World Ends as a promo single?

The UK isn't the centre of the world you know? Infact, for International artists, the UK is quite irrelevent. The song got to #2 on US iTunes already, so it's been a success as far as Madonna and her label are concerned. And it'll almost certainly climb in their official chart in the coming weeks.

looooooooove that silent valentine by will young is in the top 300
Surely the UK chart is the second most important, in terms of cultural impact at least?

Probably. Although if we're talking about cultural impact, I'd say some songs that missed the top 40 in the UK have had more cultural impact than some #1s, so our charts aren't very useful in that respect, and it's probably the same in most other countries.

In terms of sales, I think it goes:

1. Japan

2. US

3. UK

4. Germany

Although obviously Japan is quite disconnected from the rest of the world in terms of its popular music.

But it's not just Madonna and Britney Spears. Also the likes of Lady Antebellum, Taylor Swift, and many others don't get much radio support in the UK for the vast majority of their discographies. They don't see themselves as flopping. They just simply don't care, it doesn't affect their careers enough for them to care. They're all happy with their multiple top 10 hits in the US and many other countries.

I think overall, I'd go:

01 US

02 UK

03 Germany (?)

But Japan and South Korea have really high sales.

I'm almost certain it is:

2 Japan

3 Germany

4 UK

I remember reading an article not long ago which said that the UK had dropped to 4th behind Germany, I may be wrong about the order of the top 2 though.

I meant in terms of cultural importance too. Because Japan is quite cut off from Western music, so I bumped them down a couple.

Oh, fair enough :P

I never knew Germany had such high sales! :o Their charts are really good though, much better than the UK's, and almost as good as the US's.

Japan seems to have strange buying-habits though. It seems they spend a whole year having a different song at #1 almost every week. I wonder if they hold songs back like the UK, or if their public is just more musically aware, so they don't take 6 months to discover a good song.

But to be fair most UK acts that have great careers never crack the US either, it works both ways

My point was, Madonna, Britney Spears, Lady Antebellum, Taylor Swift, Lil Wayne, Tyga, etc. aren't seeing themselves as failures at the moment. They're seeing themselves as successes.

Country acts never really break anywhere bar the US and Canada (which as I said earlier, is like the UK and Ireland for chart paralells). For example Carrie Underwood has sold over 30 million records in the US alone but all she's done in the UK is had a number 93 album  But I guess it's no different to say Take That being huge over here yet never really breaking elsewhere. Everywhere has big regional acts that for whatever reason doesn't make it big anywhere else.

Yeah, and Take That aren't regarded as flops either. People need to get out of this little bubble that if someone flops in the UK that their career is dieing. It's not true at all. When you look at Britney's overall success, the UK is just a tiny proportion of it all, and it actually turns out Till the World Ends is one of the biggest hits of her career, yet people in this little UK bubble think it's a flop.

I think you are over exaggerating here, Britney has had millions of hits and #1's. A song that got to #3 in the US, helped massively by a remix with Nicki Minaj & Kesha along with rather average chart positions in most other countries it charted in, is certainly not one of her biggest hits. It wasn't a flop internationally, but you are certainly increasing the songs achievements here.
