Yes that third act with three entries is obviously Rihanna, who else could it be? Surpringly for a Rihanna album it doesn’t contain a Number one single but even that couldn’t prevent half a million sales for the star who is unquestionably one of the biggest stars of this decade. Critics noted the darker, foreboding mood of the album and cited the stars troubles with former boyfriend Chris Brown as a possible reason for this.

Back where it all began, “Glee” was a genius concept, a TV show where you could instantly buy the songs you just heard, the download age made that possible and the considerable buzz surrounding the show before it made its way to Channel 4 was considerable. Indeed the album charted on import alone, taking a massive leap from 68 to No 1 in Feb 2010 when released fully in the UK it kickstarted the brief fad. Multiple tracks charted every week but it was only the version of “Don’t Stop Believin” that really stuck around and sold well.

What new things can we write about “Only By The Night”? A top 5 best selling album of the years of 2008 and 2009 with sales of 2.2 million pretty much split between those years the rate of sales have tailed off from that heady pace, yet it still makes the top 50 for the current decade. All of which turned the band into an international phenomenon mainly off the back of lead single “Sex On Fire” which also refuses to die having sold a million copies itself.

This is the second album from UK outfit Chase & Status, the guys responsible for introducing Plan B into the mainstream after he lent vocals to “End Credits” which became the breakthrough for both acts. He’s on this album too, this time on production duties, but the group have carved out a successful career themselves, this album having the misfortune to be up against Adele, and thusly failing to top the charts, their other top 10 hit “Blind Faith” samples Loletta Holloway’s 1980 hit “Love Sensation” which was overlooked at the time but has since proved No 1 material on Black Box’s 1989’s best selling single “Ride on Time”.

42. MOONLIGHT SERENADE- Andre Rieu & His Johann Strauss Orchestra (464,200)

Proving that “Forever Vienna” was no one off, Rieu returned for Christmas 2010 with his orchestra in toe this time and pulled another hit album off. Debuting in the top 5 on sales of almost 60k, sales had quickly spiralled to nearly 350k just 6 weeks later, there are signs that appetite for his music is on the decrease after 2011’s album “And The Waltz Goes On” was released at a similar time but failed to break the quarter of a million mark.

Despite lodging the biggest weekly sale for an album that peaked at No 2 all year in 2011, the band couldn’t quite catch the furious pace set by Rihanna the week it debuted. Of course the boyband were created on “X Factor” but great things were predicted for them during the course of last year and debuting single “What Makes You Beautiful” became the fastest selling single of the year (to that point) when it sold 153k to make the top a promising start for the newest teen screams on the block.

I wonder how much Adele will add to '21' during the course of this thread :)

Suprised at the success of the Chase and Status album. I never would have expected them to sell 200K never mind close to 500K. Dubstep/drum and brass acts rarely sell albums, do they?

I think 'Immersion' by Pendulum and 'Welcome Reality' by Nero are the only #1 drum n bass and dubstep albums (respectively) ever and I don't think either have sold near as much as 'No More Idols' has. The only other top 10 dnb/dubstep albums I can think of are Magnetic Man's debut (#5) and Pendulum's previous album 'In Silico' (#2) although I'm probably missing some/loads.

Naturally, but then I'm only updating annually, so next year's countdown will only blurbs about the climbers/ new albums and I'll just list the fallers- hopefully :( :D

TOTAL SALES: 1,567,000

After a truly phenomenal year in 2009, 2010 was always gonna feel slightly like an anti climax. Three chart topping singles in the former year helped “The E.N.D” shift over a million copies during those 12 months and enabled the band to spend 28 weeks at No 1 stateside (26 of them consecutively) singles wise, even a fourth single “Imma Be” was a US No 1 into the bargain. In the UK it was third album to peak at No 3, a position that, unlike on the singles chart, they have never managed to get any higher than. It was originally going to be called “From Roots To Fruits” but the band decided that was a far better future GH title.

Without doubt this is the Scottish band’s top selling album providing them with a larger audience than previous efforts in part due to the six singles that were lifted from it. Although released in late 2009 it didn’t achieve its peak position until the promotion surrounding its nomination for the mercury music prize got going (for which it didn’t win), and further recognition for the group’s talents came in December 2010 when a cover of their hit “Many Of Horror” by X Factor winner Matt Cardle made the song instantly far more famous and caused their version to re-enter the charts in the top 10 becoming their third top 10 single to date.

38. MESSY LITTLE RAINDROPS- Cheryl Cole (489,000)

RELEASED: 01:11:10

PEAK POSITION: 1

WKS ON CHART: 16

CHARTING TRACKS:

PROMISE THIS (1)

THE FLOOD (18)

Largely abandoned after the relative failure of second single “The Flood”, Cole’s second album sold roughly half of first set “3 Words”. Much had happened in Cole’s life in between those albums, including a malaria scare and a high profile split from “love rat” husband Ashley Cole, but Cole remained the “nation’s sweetheart”TM and used that mentor role on X Factor to launch this second album with a chart topping single in “Promise This”. Sales of half a million are nothing to be sniffed at, but Cole has certainly been less high profile since its release, stepping down as X Factor judge.

Whenever I think of 2009 I ALWAYS get reminded by The Black Eyed Peas. Me and my mate used to listen to 'Boom Boom Pow' all the time and think it was amazing, then I heard 'I Gotta Feeling' on the radio when I was travelling back from a caravan holiday and became addicted to it, and I can remember both constantly being on the music channels and remember just how HUGE they were. Then they had the X-Factor performance and another #1 huge single later in the year. It was an insane year for them, they were unstoppable. :o Her and Gaga (i'll give her credit) ruled the charts that year.

And of course, I think everyone knew their next era was going to underperform. Hopefully whenever they return they have another massive era ahead of them.

Named as Gallagher was listening to Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac, post split the brothers Gallagher are still trading insults in the press but its Noel who appears to have won the battle, certainly in terms of sales of albums with Liam’s new group “Beady Eye” having failed to make this rundown. So too on the front of chart positions with Noel managing to top the charts after moving 122k in one week (almost the entire yearly total for Beady Eye). So that debut album we can chalk down as a success.
