Diva is fantastic but I was never a big fan of Video Phone. It's nice but not as good as the former.

I love how off topic we've all gone.

Until Whitney has climbed another place I REFUSE to discuss anything else!

Well not to sound TOO much like Vidcapper I've never been a big R N B fan so her songs that veer towards that end never score highly. I'm one of those that think that the Freemasons turn most things they touch into dancefloor magic!

Anyway what do you know I don't even know what I'm hatin on! (must be the fact I'm tired) It's not "Ego" I dislike it's actually "Diva" I recall during 2009 that the songs she made videos for I either hated or loved

The Beautiful Liar remix, is one of those songs I like for about 45 seconds, and then get bored and usually put something else on. But I do like it in short spells, so I think it would've been cool if they perhaps had the original for the first half, and then done the dance bit for the last half (like Just Can't Get Enough by the BEPs). So they could've had an epic crescendo section in the middle aswell. But I guess it's too late for that now.

It's good that they had the two versions of the song though, and that both were getting decent promotion. I don't understand why crossover artists like Beyonce don't do that more. I've seen so many artists get into a mess by trying to juggle two singles at the same time to try and cater to both sides of their fanbases, but they just as easily do an urban and a dance version of the same song. And even better, for chart purposes, they'd both get combined aswell.

2009 was an amazing year for Beyonce really. I much prefered her Sasha Fierce songs to her I Am... songs. Some of them had such good beats.

Interestingly, Diddy also sampled Pon De Floor in Ass on the Floor, his follow-up to Coming Home, so it was out when Run the World was in the charts. It obviously flopped majorly (although I do remember it getting top 300 on iTunes), but it's probably a more "creative" use of Pon de Floor's beat, in terms of the way they sampled the song anyway, in that they took "layers" out of Pon de Floor out and added their own sounds in it:

I think it's more likely that "Ass On The Floor" flopped because it wasn't by Beyoncé. There's little difference between it and "Run The World" both stylistically and quality-wise IMO though as you said the more imaginative use of the sample elevates AOTF above RTW for me. For it to be a hit it would have needed a far stronger hook. In terms of what you said before about songs lacking melody doing better in previous years than now, I think the successful ones tend to fall into one of two camps - 1. songs by an artist with an established fanbase OR coming off the back of a big hit or 2. songs with a little earworm hook that makes up for the lack of a key melody (such as Boom Boom Pow).

Why would it bother you at all? Surely it's a good thing that there are lots of songs going to #1? It's more interesting than seeing the same song at the top every week.

Personally I prefer fewer, longer-running #1's, as that generally means they are of better quality.

 23. Wherever You Will Go - Charlene Soraia -_- God damn you DOI.

That song, along with Birdy, Lana (VG) & CP (JOH) are the 4 songs in the charts I really like!

Hey, I don't mind R&B (preferably by females though) - it's only hip-hop/rap that I object to...

I agree with that. I think probably the only way we'll ever one of those "empty" rhythmn-based songs do well again is if a big artist does it. Although, even then, I think Single Ladies and Boom Boom Pow would flop if they were released now. However, a song like Gotye's getting to #1 looks promising for acceptance of more types of music in the future, and that song is very rhythmn-based, like Timbaland songs.

Looking down the chart, there are a fair few of the "emptier" songs, but most of them are from Whitney Houston. Although there are a few others like Bad Girls by M.I.A. (but that's hardly going to be a hit, is it :().

Also, I know this is the UK iTunes thread, but people need to see the top 5 on US iTunes. This is incredible!

1. Whtiney Houston - I Will Always Love Your

2. fun. - We Are Young

3. Adele - Rolling in the Deep

4. Adele - Set Fire to the Rain

5. Adele - Someone Like You

I think 2012 could be Adele's year aswell.

Great to see Emeli Sande set for a T3 debut - and hopefully a #1 album debut too. Shame it's DJ Fresh at the top on the singles chart - it'll probably spend a few weeks in the T10 and them bomb out of the top 40, I mean 'Louder' didn't sell that much in the end, despite a 115k opening week.

'I Will Always Love You' is now #12 combined.

Is anyone else shocked that there wasn't a tribute to Amy Winehouse at the Grammys last night. It's not like they replaced an Amy tribute with a Whitney one at the last minute. It's such a shame because Amy was a huge influence and indirectly helped the likes of Adele and Duffy break into the US market.

 89 Emeli Sande - Read All About It, Part III

Quite high already, hopefully it will go top 40! I think it could!

I Was Here still seems to be a fan favourite from what I'm aware. It's quite like Halo I think.

1+1 is my least favourite from the album, but I love pretty much everything else on there.

I heard 1+1 when her Glastonbury set was on TV and it sounded like one of the dullest things ever.

Well I don't own a Beyonce album so i'm not in a position to argue, but for me her best songs are

Sweet Dreams

If I were A Boy

Beautiful Liar (literally only for the AMAZINGNESS of that Freemasons remix)

Halo

Irreplaceable

Love On Top

and the poor ones/ I can't make out any tune whatsoever

Countdown

Ego (seriously WTF?)

Single Ladies (repetitive and V Grating- perhaps had something to do with the fact it was around FOREVER)

EDIT: and Run The World

Sweet Dreams, Beautiful Liar and Irreplaceable are great (and I agree with Eric that the original of Beautiful Liar is better than the remix). If I Were A Boy is awful though, one of her worst alongside SL(PAROI) and RTW(G).

I know you meant Diva now :P but Ego is pretty average in its original form. I do love the remix though. Kanye West can make anything sound amazing  Except 'Stronger' which I hate.

Yeah because it is "so personal" blah blah. :P

My highlight from 4 is by far the military 'End of Time'. WARNING: If you detest RTW you might not like this but this is one of the BEST things Bey has done.

I've heard End Of Time as well, just randomly on the radio - sounded quite decent. Is she ever going to release it though or is the '4' era over here? :drama:

-x-

OMG at Adele having 3 of the top 5 on US iTunes again (RITD is now up to #2) :o :cheer: Hope she can get the 2-3-4, she won't get near Whitney though as she's miles ahead. Coldplay's Paradise is also back up to #7 :w00t: So I'm guessing they performed that instead of Princess Of China even though the Grammy performances list said 'Coldplay and Rihanna' together? 'Princess Of China' is only #44.

Ooh, Adele won all 6 of her nominations :cheer:

Amy received a posthumous award at least for Best pop Duo performance.

Amy received a posthumous award at least for Best pop Duo performance.

True but I'm still shocked that her premature passing wasn't given a tribute. Although she got one at the VMAs with Bruno Mars performing 'Valerie'.

Amy better get a tribute at the BRITs this year and if she doesn't, I'll be absolutely shocked. I don't think there are any plans for it though.
