The airplay rules annoy me too, in a way. But only because they hurt many songs that I like. In the year-end charts last year, I remember some of my favourite songs like Look At Me Now and Black and Yellow being really high up in the Digital chart, but then because of airplay they were low in the official year-end Hot 100 chart. :(

I wonder how big a lead a song would have to have on download sales in the US, to be #1 despite low airplay?

It depends on the week (as some weeks all the songs with high airplay are low down the chart, for example). But I think less than 20 songs have ever debuted at #1 in Hot 100 history, most of them in the download age, so it is quite rare. Eminem and Britney Spears always manage to debut at #1 with their lead singles (still living off their popularity from 10 years ago evidently ), and a few other songs managed it such as Part of Me last week, Born This Way, We R Who We R, Right Round, and a couple of others.

I think the *lowest* sales of a song to debut at #1 was We R Who We R, but I remember even that having over a 50% lead (over Whip My Hair by Willow, which obviously wasn't getting much airplay). So the other songs must have had huge leads. Born This Way had the biggest lead I think, I think it was something like 7x of the #2!

Turn Me On back at #10

The Monkees - Daydream Believer #40

The Monkees update:

38. Daydream Believer - The Monkees

72. I'm a Believer - The Monkees

86. Daydream Believer - The Monkees

116. I'm a Believer - The Monkees

137. The Monkees (Theme Song from the Show) - The Monkees

146. (Theme From) The Monkees - The Monkees

147. Last Train to Clarksville - The Monkees

176. Last Train to Clarksville - The Monkees

247. Daydream Believer - The Monkees

280. Pleasant Vallley Sunday - The Monkees

290. A Little Bit Me, a Little Bit You - The Monkees

Quite a lot bigger of an impact than I thought would come from Davy's death :o Daydream Believer could sneak into the top 40 like 'At Last' did.

I do recognise the bit of Daydream Believer used in an advert but not the rest of it.

Seeing what effect Davy has had, I'd imagine we'd have a full-scale invasion if Paul McCartney were to die (maybe not so much Ringo).

09. David Guetta & Nicki Minaj 'Turn Me On'

10. Jessie J 'Domino'

^ Hoping Jessie J can hold for a tenth week next week - although I'm hoping StooShe can crack the T10 - depending on who grabs the #10 spot this week (Guetta/Minaj, Sheeran or Redman/LZ7) - I reckon they'll be the one to fall out.

Dappy is falling so fast now!

168. Thank You Jb - Lexxi Saal and the Beliebers

I don't know what this is, all I know is I want it dead immediately.

02 (0.6526) Dappy / Brian May - 'Rockstar'

03 (0.6517) Emeli Sande - 'Next to Me'

^ Dappy is very soon set to fall to #3 - and Flo Rida / Sia are right behind on 0.6386 - so I imagine in a few hours time, Dappy could well be down to #4! Good thing he won't be #1 on Sunday - it's likely to be a 3/4 drop at least.

96. Broken - Richard Wisker

It's the début single by the Tracy Beaker Returns star and Friday Download host. I don't expect it to get very high, but his fans got "#BrokentoNumber1" in the UK top trending on Twitter yesterday...

I don't think right round did debut at #1, it just has the record for the highest opening week sales (Can't remember if Gaga broke it or not). It charted before its digital release from strong airplay.

Speaking as a Belieber, I want to say that I have absolutely no idea what the hell this is. :P

C.W got it right, it's his 18th birthday today. :)

It is (I only know because it's dominating trending topics on Twitter :drama:), and ikr? :drama:

'Thank you Jb' for what? Making all our ears bleed in synchronisation?

Not to mention The Beatles would have a big sales resurgence in both singles and albums I'd have thought.

Actually if Paul M died I think his very success would work against him - what song/s would the sales cluster around - the thing with the Monkees is these days they are remembered for 5 or 6 main songs - and Davy Jones only sang lead on a few of those - it means there is less to choose from so you'll probably get one or two songs with a higher peak. The thing with Whitney recently is a good example - too many hits to pick from split the 'vote' - resulting in a fairly fleeting chart display.
