Gavin Ryan's Chartifacts

(Thanks to Gavin Ryan)

Singles

Six straight weeks at No.1 now for Flo Rida and Sia on "Wild Ones", only one week shy of his seven weeks accumulated with the song "Right Round" from 2010. Plus this week the top three all remain static, with Gym Class Heroes at No.2 for a second week with "Ass Back Home", and 360 and Gossling spend a third week at No.3 with "Boys Like You".

After the Top 3, it all changes, with four songs leaping into the Top 10. Firstly, up seven places to No.4 are Qwote and Pitbull with "Throw Your Hands Up", after which last weeks top three debuts all claim Top 10 status in their second week within the Top 100. Katy Perry's "Part of Me" leaps seventeen places to No.5; Chris Brown's "Turn up the Music" is up seven spots to No.6, and jumping a massive twenty places to No.7 is Jason DeRulo's "Fight for You", the fourth consecutive Top 10 single from his "Future History" album (TW-77), and his seventh Top 10 on the ARIA Singles chart.

The remainder of the Top 10 consists of David Guetta and Nicki Minaj with "Turn Me On" down two places to No.8, "Hey Hey Hey (Pop another Bottle)" for Laurent Wery and SwiftKid down five places to No.9, and also dropping five is Coldplay's "Paradise" spending a thirteenth week within the Top 10 and up to 4xPlatinum in sales.

NEW PEAKS & MOVERS: With One Direction announcing an April visit to our country it has helped their first single "What Makes You Beautiful" to climb back up six places to No.13, whilst their new single "One Thing" drops only three places to No.20 this week. Nicki Minaj scores the biggest leap within the Top 100, as her new single "Starships" leaps fifty-eight places to land at No.14.

Jumping eighteen places to No.23 is last week’s debut for fun. featuring Janelle Monae and their anthemic track "We Are Young". Train crack the Top 30 at No.29 with "Drive By", up seven places from last week, and moving up two places to a new peak of No.40 is Professor Green and Emeli Sande with "Read All About it". Lastly, breaking into the Top 50 for the first time is Labrinth and Tinie Tempah on Lab's new single "Earthquake", up sixteen places to No.41 this week.

Lower 50: Taio Cruz is up a few places to No.52 with his latest track "Troublemaker", Rizzle Kicks jump fourteen places to No.56 with "Mama Do the Hump", Lil' Wayne minor #49 hit "Mirror" is back up twenty-two places to No.57 this week. Skrillex is up fourteen spots to a new peak of No.67 with "Kyoto", and the new UK No.2 single "Next to Me" by Emeli Sande jumps up here twenty-three places to No.77.

There are only four new entries to the Top 100 this week, and two of those are Glee songs. This time around they are two modern songs, with their version of David Guetta and Usher's "Without You" (TW-54) debuting at No.62 and their cover of Rihanna's "We Found Love" (TW-33) coming in at No.79.

Sean Paul debuts at No.63 with his new track "She Doesn't Mind", his thirteenth Top 100 Chart entry, and the fourth and final new entry comes in at No.92, Taylor Swift featuring The Civil Wars on the song "Safe and Sound".

Albums

Adele's "21" picked up the two Brit Awards this past week, and one was for "Album of the Year", and by holding at No.1 in Australia she equals the twenty-nine week run at the top that Delta Goodrem's "Innocent Eyes" achieved from the end of March 2003. There is a third album that achieved 29 weeks at No.1, Neil Diamond’s “Hot August Night” (from May 1973), and this new Adele achievement puts all three albums in a tie at fourth place on the list of ‘Most Weeks at No.1 – Albums’ (1965 to 2012). If she stays for one more week she will tie with The Beatles landmark album “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” which notched up 30 weeks from August 1967.

Former No.1 from three weeks ago, "Born to Die" by Lana Del Rey holds at No.2 for a second week, but two of last weeks debuts/re-entries for Whitney Houston leap into the Top 10 this week, giving her three greatest hits/best of collections within the Top 10 this week. 2007's "The Ultimate Collection" leaps eight places to No.3, and the recently released "The Essential" is up thirteen places to No.7, whilst her first best of "The Greatest Hits" drops from No.3 to No.10 this week, all of them have now achieved new chart peaks this or last week.

Also jumping back into the top 5 is Bruno Mars' "Doo-Wops and Hooligans", up seven places to No.4, and now spending it's 43rd week inside the Top 10, placing it equal tenth on the list of ‘Most Weeks in the Top 10’ (1988 to 2012) alongside debut albums Savage Garden (1997/98) and Missy Higgins (2004/05). Rod Stewart's tour of the country finished last week, but again the tour has helped his "Storyteller" collection to climb; it's up two places to a new peak of No.5. Skrillex returns to his former peak of No.6 with the "Bangarang" EP, up three places from last week, "El Camino" for The Black Keys is down four places to No.8, and falling a single spot to No.9 is 360's "Falling & Flying" album.

NEW PEAKS & MOVERS: Roxette's tour of Australia helps their current best of collection "Hits" to leap up twenty-two places to a new peak of No.17, and jumping back up eight places to No.19 is Kelly Calrkson's "Stronger". Skrillex's first album "Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites" jumps back up ten places to No.31, and Emeli Sande's debut album "Our Version of Events" is up fourteen places to a new peak of No.32.

John Denver's "Ultimate Collection" climbs a few places to a new peak of No.34, and rejoining the Top 50 at No.42 (up nine places) is Pink Floyd's "Dark Side of the Moon", whilst Nicki Minaj's "Pink Friday" is back up twelve places to No.50 due to her new single exploding (although it won't be on the album until the re-issued edition).

English Alternative Rock group Band of Skulls score the highest and only new entry to the Top 100 this week, debuting at No.35 with their second album "Sweet Sour". Their first album "Baby Darling Doll Face Honey" (2009) failed to make the ARIA Top 100 Albums chart.

Lower 50: Bon Iver's Grammy wins help continue to make his self-titled album climb again this week, it's up twenty-one places to No.58. Taylor Swift’s impending tour helps her "Speak Now" album to re-enter at No.71, whilst other re-entries come from Jimmy Barnes "Hits" (No.84), "The Lost Children" for Disturbed (No.87) and "Let's Go" for David Campbell (No.89).

Can't find any information about it, but Delta Goodrem's Innocent Eyes had 29 weeks at #1 in 2003/4 and is definitely one of the longest running.

Dire Straits' Brothers In Arms - 34 non-consecutive weeks.

Good to see Emile doing well over there. Is it word of mouth or heavy airplay?
Also where do the bulk of Aus CD sales come from? The charts seem fairly different from iTunes, esp the album chart. Also is a chart week Sat - Fri?
Adele's almost certainly going to get to 34 weeks in Australia, equalled Delta's 29 this week and will overtake it next week no doubt. I didn't think anybody could match Delta's early Aus hype but clearly Adele can do anything...
Jason Derulo scores a seventh top 10 hit out of nine attempts in Australia now - 05-01-04-32-22 ~ 05-03-09-07 - quite an achievement, I must say. Shame album #2 didn't do as well in the US, but four top 40 hits in the UK is still not really 'flopping', there's just not been any big hits. Hopefully he can make a big success out of album #3 - just don't sample Robin S!

They still have a physical CD market. When I was there in 2009 there were still huge numbers of physical CD Singles being released and physical albums still have a large share of the market.

While iTunes is the dominant download service (It may be the only one....), JB-HiFi and the Sanity Group (Sanity, HMV and Virgin Megastore. HMV and Virgin have been basically phased out now so pretty much all of their 155 stores are now Sanity branded) still carry big influence over the charts.
