Alot of xmas hits that get alot of airplay every december didnt do overly weel chartwise because of the busy time - eg elton john only reached n 17 with 'Step into christmas' and all the classic 50s xmas hits didnt peak very well until downloads were introduced and yet people know the words to them as well as any piece of shakesphere!!

This had an absolutely pants chart run to start with:

Elbow - One Day Like This 39-44-63-50R(2)-62

I know I SHOULD know this song and I've probably heard it alot, but I'm not actually 100% I've even heard this.

EDIT: Just listened, can't recall ever hearing it before...

I feel like people are throwing around the word 'Classic' a little too easy here, perhaps its considered an 'Eminem classic' but its certainly not a classic, I pride myself in my pop music knowledge (not so much hip hop) and I have never heard of this song before. True 'Classic' songs are songs like 'Brown Eyed Girl' and 'Go Your Own Way' (neither are songs I own or particularly like but everyone knows them etc).

I agree, I think people using the word 'Classic' a bit loosely here, I don't think half the songs mentioned can be in any way regarded as classics, for example:

Boomkat - The Wreckoning

Arcade Fire - Rebellion

Eminem - Til I Collapse

50 Cent featuring Mobb Deep - Outta Control

Rusted Roots - Send Me On My Way

I'm sure they're all great songs but they can hardly be considered as classics. As Cowboystyle says, true classics are songs like 'Brown Eyed Girl', 'Go Your Own Way' and others that have been mentioned in this topic like 'Seven Nation Army', 'Stairway To Heaven', 'Mr Brightside', 'Summer of 69' etc, all of which have pretty poor chart runs considering their classic status. Infact I'd say the most shocking of those is 'Summer of 69', one of the best known songs of all time and yet it peaked at Number 42!

How?! It's been the soundtrack to pretty much everything over the past 4 years!

"Rebellion (Lies)", only being eight years old, doesn't really qualify for "classic" status yet IMO - neither should "Mr. Brightside" on the same logic. However, I'd say both are almost indisputably modern classics. The former didn't do badly, it did make the top 20 (their only single to do so) but that is an underperformance when you look at its status now. The latter is so popular these days that even its making the top 10 looks like a horrendous underachievement.

JakeWild was being hyperbolic I'm pretty sure~

aye I forget this kinda thing doesn't come through online

(it is a classic though hehehaho)

you are not an o2 customer lol

Paramore - Misery Business is a weird one:

First 31-64 then 58-57

then on official re-release: 17-50-55-73

Id also say Sarah Mclachlan - Angel - a song used widely in media and covered to death but its uk chart run was:

36-47-62 with a one week re-entry in 2010

Misery Business is Paramores best song by a country mile!!

Tis, although it's a similar situation to "Rebellion (Lies)" where the band hasn't had a huge breakthrough single since so it doesn't seem that strange that it only just scraped into the top 20.
