I don't think we've had a poll like this before.

 

Obviously the numbers will vary over time, and the categories are somewhat subjective, but I'm just hoping for an ball-park figure.

 

Personally, my scale would be something like :

 

Love : Buy the song & never get tired of hearing it. :wub:

 

through to...

 

Hate : Can't stand it - change channel or switch off TV/radio instantly on hearing it. :puke:

 

PS, if you can, try to ensure your choices add up to roughly 40. :)

In my case, perhaps I should look at a chart from March 1982 for an age comparison - the only problem with that, is that I'll probably only *remember* relatively few of them... :)

Of the 40 songs in my personal chart there are just 6 that have, or are likely to, make the top 40, so I don't ever love many, I can usually tolerate between a 1/4 and 1/2. I'd say I'm indifferent to most, I just find it all so boring and samey.

 

Of last weeks top 40 I really like 8 (Gotye, Guetta/Sia, Monkeys, Rihanna, Jay-Z/Kanye, Lana (VG), Coldplay x2), which is quite a lot I think. I only properly dislike 5 though (Dappy, Rizzle Kicks, Pitbull, Cher, Christina)

My music taste seems to embrace nearly everything and I usually at least like 38 of the top 40, there's always the odd one or two that I can't stand though...in terms of LOVE, it's closer to 10 perhaps.

I've never quite undersood the hatred for this track, to me it'd just rather dull & uninteresting. Certainly not worthy of the no.1 position though. The only track here I would put in the 'hate' category is Adrian Gurvitz - Classic. 'Gonna write a classic, gonna write it in the attic', wish it had bloody stayed there!

I don't think this is a particulary good chart by early 80s standards, I would have just 3 in my 'love' category, ABC - Poison Arrow, The Jam -Town Called Malice and The Stranglers - Golden brown.

That's actually a very good week too, there was a period last summer through early autumn where I frequently liked only 2/3 songs in the entire top 40.

I'm pretty much the same. In the current top 40 there's a whopping four songs I dislike (Alone Again, Skyscraper, Twilight and Moves Like Jagger - the latter two are very much in the hatred zone, the former two are closer to just dislike).

 

In the rest of the top 40 I'd rank everything as 'like' or 'love' except for 'What Doesn't Kill You (Stronger)', 'Turn Me On', 'Ass Back Home' and 'Breathing' which I'm neutral towards. 'Next To Me' is rapidly getting that way as well.

 

So in the poll I've said:

Love >10

Like >15

Neutral 1-5

Dislike 1-5

Hate 1-2

Same here.

 

Looking at the chart this week, there is only one song I can't stand (Sexy And I Know It), around three songs I haven't heard and the rest is all decent/good/amazing.

Going from this week:

 

Love: 0

Like: 7

Indifferent: 15

Dislike: 0

Not heard: 18

 

I've probably heard some from the last category when I'm out / on the radio, but not be able to put a name to it. The charts aren't that bad! I reckon I only start to dislike a song / artist when they're proclaimed as something along the lines of "really talented", "profound", when they're in fact rather cheap. I can overlook Ed Sheeran and Lana Del Rey on that matter as they get adequate amounts of stick.

I think that shows how time alters my perceptions and this could happen to 2012 if I look back in a year, but generally I like the majority of the top 40, but tracks I love are rare and take a long time for me to consider then that way, as in the same though are tracks I hate which are also very rare, often I just dislike them and hardly strongly

So pretty much an even aplit for me most of the time, it's mostly rap / hip hop stuff I hate and the dancey stuff I dislike.

I generally like or love very few.

Typically:

 

Love: 7-12

Like: 12-18

Indifference: 7-12

Dislike: 2-6

Hate: 0-1

 

I took this week's 40 and added modifiers either side of it. I rarely, if ever, hate songs, so there isn't normally one of those, and even more rarely more than one. On the flipside, I find it very easy to love/like songs.
