I think part of the reason One Direction's first album had "poor" sales was because their album-selling single (Gotta Be You) didn't really do very well, whilst JLS's (Everybody in Love) was a big hit.

That could definitely be one of the reasons, what where they thinking with that? I still don't understand why Gotta Be You was the second single. I haven't heard the whole album, but surely there must be better singles on it than Gotta Be You?

One Thing is a great pop song, but wouldn't have worked as the second single so soon after What Makes You Beautiful.

3. Part of Me - Katy Perry

5. She Doesn't Mind - Sean Paul

8. Last Time - Labrinth

9. Proud - JLS

Suprised about JLS, although their EP is much higher than the rest:

EP's on iTunes album chart:

2. JLS - Proud

7. Katy Perry - Part Of Me

11. Labrinth - Last Time

I think 'Thinking of You', 'Waking Up In Vegas' and 'Teenage Dream' are her three best videos - all for different reasons.

TOY had such a creative concept, WUIV was her most hilarious and TD has something about it that's brilliant - yes it's not the most original but the summery feel sells it to me.

Probably an unpopular opinion but I really dislike the TOTGA video now. It's just too sensationalistic. It doesn't even fit with the song. The song is about her boyfriend leaving her and making a new life for himself ("I heard you got your tattoo removed"/"saw you around town, singing the blues") - but the video is about her boyfriend dying after they fall out.

WUIV is hilarious I agree. The scene where she steals food from the abandoned tray outside her room

Katy does have fantastic facial expressions which really helps in videos I think. As for 'Teenage Dream', I didn't like the video half as much as the song. Sadly, I think TD has become the forgotten song of the era.

I'm happy 'Part of Me' is set to be #1 but it's also bit disappointing as it's her poorest single yet (bar the 3Oh!3 and Timbaland) collaborations.

Yeah, I think One Thing and What Makes You Beautiful are too similar to release next to each other.

To be honest, I didn't think Gotta Be You was a bad choice for the 2nd single until after it was released. I didn't think the public reaction to the song would be so poor (and their record label probably thought the same). Sometimes with pre-album singles you get bad choices made, since you can't really judge the public reaction until you've released them (and by then it's too late). I'm sure songs like You Da One, Take a Chance on Me, etc. wouldn't have been released if the albums came out before and the record labels saw that those songs weren't very popular.

Yeah, she does. She's like the female version of Timbaland with regards to face expressions.

Carly Rae Jepsen's "Call Me Maybe" is #1 on Irish iTunes meaning it's only a matter of time before it becomes a big UK chart hit as well.
JLS cocked up in America cos of their team chose to release 'Everybody In Love' to promote them. I was shocked at how well it even did in the UK! If they went in with something She Makes Me Wanna, Teach MeHow To Dance or Eyes Wide Shut they'd have a much better chance of getting similar success to The Wanted and One Direction.

 32. The Swarm - You Me At Six

If this keeps climbing and doesn't plummet by the weekend it could well become their second highest peaking single (other than 'Rescue Me' their best is the #33 peak of 'Finder Keepers') :o

Dear God, I hope not.

Wow. You'd think it'd be a bit higher than this. :drama:

He released this as a free download weeks before release, that's probably why it isn't selling much

Oh my god that's a hilarious scene!! Also when she wins big at the casino table and she's scooping her poker chips up.

Yeah it's such a shame regarding TD. :( I wonder if it would be far more remembered now if it actually did make #1 instead of stalling at #2.

The song is doing big things all over the world infact! :o And not with a whole lot of promotion either I believe. I think the main promotion is some Justin Bieber video to do with the song, or something like that.

Yeah, it's him, Selena and others dancing and miming to the song for some reason, and now a load of the insane 'Beliebers' are like 'ZOMG NOW I'M A HUGE CARLY RAE JEPSEN STAN!!1!!1!'

Another artist who annoyingly is huge like a year after I start liking them, I hope the success doesn't put me off :drama:

Point about boyband's albums - JLS are the only current generation boyband to have a massive selling album. One Direction's debut album was/is a big underperformance (certainly in my opinion anyway), failing to even come within 100k of JLS' opening and it's only sold, what, a third of JLS' total? I don't think it's even outsold 'Outta This World' yet. And then on top of that JLS have a third decent-selling album as well - Jukebox hasn't sold *that* much less than Up All Night itself AFAIA.

Plus One Direction have only had one big hit single and The Wanted have had three at a push if you count Lightning. The Wanted haven't done anything special album-wise. The only thing One Direction/The Wanted have over JLS is that they've had international success, but at the moment their domestic success is massively outweighed by JLS' and I'm sure JLS will try to crack America soon as there's a definite market for UK boybands now.

(I know JLS arguably only have one or two big hit singles as well but I'd think the majority of their singles discography has outsold 'Gotta Be You', 'One Thing' and every The Wanted single bar 'All Time Low', 'Glad You Came' and 'Lightning').

'Up All Night' sales currently stand around the 400k mark last time I checked, so only a small 50-70k between that and 'Jukebox' which is around the 350k mark at last time of looking - but I do agree, for all the hype and big launch that One Direction had here I would've thought 'Up All Night' would have matched the sales that JLS' first album had by now - although to be fair their two singles since 'What Makes You Beautiful' have both been appalling choices. They should have gone for 'I Want' or 'Tell Me A Lie' as the 2nd and 3rd singles, they were far stronger songs, 'Gotta Be You' and 'One Thing' are just lazy.

I think this just goes to show the importance of choosing singles wisely, and not just going for any old song because it suits the time of year more appropriately as One Direction clearly thought by releasing 'Gotta Be You' - admittedly JLS are a little bit guilty of the seasonal factor with releasing 'Do You Feel What I Feel?' around the Christmas/New Year period last year but I thought it was a good single regardless, they'd not really done a fun party track like that before and it showed another side to the album (and I LOVE the dance routine they have for it. I busted it out on New Year's Eve last year!)

I wouldn't be surprised if JLS do decide to give America another go after this current tour of theirs, particularly since the material for their next album that they've been talking about lately has some pretty big names behind it - Babyface and Darkchild I believe were two names mentioned by Oritse and Marvin? When you think about the track record of those two producers and whose hits they were behind and the fact that the boys have said this album will be more R&B orientated and more akin to the sound of their 1st album then I imagine they've got an ace up their sleeve somewhere that could break them there and get them another number 1.

69. Go Your Own Way - Lissie

Nobody mentioned there's a video (of sorts) for this...

To be fair, it was in summer 2010 they tried to break the US think, so She Makes Me Wanna and Eyes Wide Shut didn't exist then. Maybe they should've released Beat Again or One Shot instead, but I could understand Everybody in Love since it was produced by J.R. Rotem (I think) and he was pumping out hits in the US at that time (Whatcha Say, Replay, In My Head, etc.), so they probably thought it could be a hit too.

I feel like The Club is Alive was originally intended to be a US single aswell. I remember in a couple of interviews when they were promoting The Club is Alive they basically said things like how they wanted to do a song like OMG, and to do like a will.i.am-style autotune club track with sampling. So I think maybe they had their eyes on the US when doing that song aswell, although I think they probably decided against it since the song got so much criticism here.
