Say You'll Be There is quite average and my least favourite of the Spice Girls' hits. I do love the rest of those though, even C'est La Vie

an all female top 3, probably not what you'd expect looking at how boybands are more dominant in todays charts :o I think I have an idea for two of them, and the third could possibly be another song from one of those acts

Say You'll Be There is really ALL about that iconic video. Trixie Firecracker pretty much confirmed my love for Geri as the #1 Spice Girl, she looked both foxy AND bad-ass. The song itself was great back in the day but sounds a bit weak now and doesn't have the gusto of some of their other offerings to cut through the dated production. Great swing beat though.

As for No Matter What, well being penned by the hand of Andrew Lloyd Webber was always going to put it ahead of most of their other dreary, barely a tune in sight ballads, but it has FAR too much Stephen Gately on the vocals (who, not to speak ill of the dead, has always had an IRRITATING voice, like some kind of annoying choir boy who should be on Songs of Praise not in the charts imo) so still a bit short of being great for me. Plus it's probably the first time I felt a song was annoyingly overplayed through no choice of my own - it really was everywhere for the entirity of Autumn 1998. Whistle Down The Wind by the lovely Tina Arena was clearly the better song from that musical ANYWAY.

Looking forward to the top 3. All three are AMAZING songs.

So it all ends tomorrow with your top 3! Tune in at 5 :(

I'm genuinely going to be a bit sad when this thread ends.

It's been the best EVER - even if I was one of only a few who had any real enthusiasm for it.

I really disliked the Boyzone version of No Matter What. In my opinion, Meat Loaf's was miles better. However, his was far too theatrical (it included the intro/outro) to be released. Still, his voice has 100x the emotion of Boyzone's version, it's amazing.

:D Yes I thought it might be more "Buzzjack" than the previous thread but still it's not done badly really. I'm going to rest the "Top 200" threads for a little while I have something ENTIRELY different lined up next.................

Gezza, I've been quiet, but thank you for this thread, it has been a fascinating read. Can't wait for the next one!

That's OK, I wasn't fishing for compliments, well not until tomorrow anyway haha. Glad you enjoyed!

Hang on, was Meat Loaf supposed to release it first? :o Honestly never knew that. Or am I getting confused with your comment and he just did a version of it later.

Re: Spice Girls - I've never heard about 'Love Thing' being considered as a second single for them. Only ever read that their label really wanted it to be their debut single, but the girls were insistent that it had to be 'Wannabe'.

I would have commented on this more but boybands / girlgroups aren't generally my thing really. Says the person who had The Wanted at #1 in his personal chart three weeks ago.

I have been following it though :P

Apparently it's in Mel B's biography P 172?! :o

Say You'll Be There is by far my fave Spice Girls track! Really classy and the video is a bit of a classic.

I thought you may have got it from the SYBT wiki page! :D I checked her book *I am a Spice loon * and it's not mentioned on page 172 - but I have the hardback, and perhaps that reference is for the paperback? Maybe it's true, but I don't remember!

03. 2 BECOME 1- Spice Girls (1,076,600)

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/d/d6/2_Become_1.jpg

RELEASED: 1996

PEAK POSITION: 1

WKS ON CHART: 23

Much like “Spice Up Your Life” this release was delayed by a week to allow the Dunblane charity track to make No 1, but the delayed release did nothing to prevent sales and a whopping 429k people purchased the song in its first week to become the 1996 Christmas No 1. Wondering why the album version has a line altered from the single version? The line in question is sung by Beckham, the lines run “Any day if we endeavour/ girls and boys look good together” whilst the single version alters the latter part to “once again if we endeavour/ Love will bring us back together” and the reason was that they had collected a large (unanticipated) gay fan base and didn’t want to risk alienating them.

02. NEVER EVER- All Saints (1,253,400)

RELEASED: 1997

PEAK POSITION: 1

WKS ON CHART: 24

Famously selling 770k before making No 1 (a record) and spending 15 weeks in the top 10, this track (like two others in the top 10) picked up the BRIT award for best video and single in 1998, yet followers of my other threads will note that its solitary week at No 1 was achieved by a margin of just 600 copies and a rather low tally of 54k. With more than just a touch of “Amazing Grace” about the song, the hymnal quality probably helped sales through the festive period as the track spent longer in the top 10 consecutively than any song since the mighty “Think Twice”.

01. WANNABE- Spice Girls (1,350,700)

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/b/b1/Wannabe.jpg

RELEASED: 1996

PEAK POSITION: 1

WKS ON CHART: 26

A very fitting song for No 1 considering a good few girl groups in this thread were either inspired by, or damn right copied, the footsteps of the originators of “Girl Power”. A 7 wk chart topper in the summer of 1996 it was another recipient of the BRIT for best song and was the only one of their hits to replicate its success in the US where it went all the way as well. Written in half an hour and recorded in an hour, the song was an irrepressible bundle of pop fun and one shot video (filmed at the old midland grand hotel in St Pancras) has since become an iconic 90s music moment and they truly dominated the pop charts in a way that few have subsequently. They were the first all British girl group to make No 1 here and no-one sold more records than they did in the 90s, still working out what Zig-a-zig-ah means......
