May 16, 201213 yr Author My thanks once again to all who have contributed to this rundown. As I always say it is you who make a thread :D If you've been reading this thread as a guest then why not sign up and start adding your thoughts? Go on you know it makes sense..... :dancing:
May 16, 201213 yr Author It means sex. I refuse to believe good wholesome girls like the spices would be singing about that! :o
May 16, 201213 yr This rundown was great thanks! Very interesting to see how big acts really are/were. Any chance of the same period but albums?
May 16, 201213 yr Gezza can i ask why you didnt include bands that are mixed sex, would be interested to see how bands like, steps, s club 7, the corrs, hearsay, liberty x etc would have made it different.
May 16, 201213 yr What a top 3!!! *.* I have all three tracks on CD single but I will always regard '2 Become 1' as Spice Girls best ever single. As much as I love 'Never Ever', 'Pure Shores' remains my fave All Saints single. Excellent work compiling and counting this down Gezza. :D Look forward to whatever it is you have planned in the coming months.
May 16, 201213 yr Hang on, was Meat Loaf supposed to release it first? :o Honestly never knew that. Or am I getting confused with your comment and he just did a version of it later. I don't think the intention was to release it, but it did appear as the opening track on his 2CD Very Best Of. As far as I'm aware he did record it before Boyzone though. He also recorded A Kiss Is A Terrible Thing To Waste, also from Whistle Down The Wind. I think because they were both written by Steinman, it would be safe to assume that Meat got his chops around the tracks before anyone else.
May 16, 201213 yr Had no idea thats why they changed the line in 2 become 1. I just thought it was a way to get people to buy the single as well as the album
May 16, 201213 yr I didn't include them as they aren't boy bands or Girl Groups. Yes I no that by why did you not include bands that are not only of the same sex?
May 16, 201213 yr What a brilliant top 3 indeed! I could hardly have picked it any better myself. I have to take a minute to post my thoughts on each one as ALL were such significant tracks in my childhood, so feel free to skip this boring rambling commentary if you want, there's nothing useful or interesting said here anyway. Well, Wannabe first... undoubtedly it's such an important track for my generation (early 20s) and I, without doubt, credit this as the song that REALLY got me into pop music. I'm not sure without it what would have been the case, especially as, as a song, it almost single-handedly changed the landscape of the 90s and every pop act that emerged in the next 5 or so years owed a HUGE debt to the Spice Girls. And its success couldn't have really come at many other times, when Britpop had made it COOL to be British again and Take That had split up just months before leaving a huge gaping hole in the pop world. And as their claim, there are few other songs that are so proficient at capturing your attention from the very first line and keeping it right to the end with all its hooks and turns as Wannabe - at the end of the day, what MORE could you want from an introductory/debut single than that? An absolute pop classic. 2 Become 1 - there's not as much to say here as with Wannabe, but that doesn't make it any less of a track. A gorgeous ballad sung with sincerity and emotion, and the instrumentation and production is absolutely beyond STUNNING. Just listen to the purely instrumental section in the middle when the vocals drop out before they lead back in to the last chorus for evidence of that - how gorgeous is that? Again, flawless pop in a completely different way. And finally, Never Ever... again, it's just really good at capturing your attention right from the off with that spoken word intro, and lyrics with lines that seem to flow the next effortlessly as if they were written without over-thought if you know what I mean, that is great songwriting from Shaznay there. But undoubtedly the shining moment is obviously the chorus which TOWERS above the rest of the song in such a glorious way, but the whole song is just amazing. And yes, I remember in your Closest Races to Number One thread it barely beating Bamboogie the week it got to #1 - what a disaster that would have been!! Fantastic work as usual Gezza. :D As I said yesterday this has been a hugely enjoyable thread for me probably more than any thread on BuzzJack, mainly because it's almost a laid out list of songs that soundtracked my childhood. Not sure how you're going to top it!! :o
May 16, 201213 yr My faves in the Top 10 08. Stay (Another Day) East 17 923,900 09. C'est La Vie B*witched 851,000 I will read the whole thread soon but I expect it to be great - like all of Gezza's other threads. :D
May 16, 201213 yr "Naked" remains my favourite on the first album! Putting aside the singles, it's easily Last Time Lover for me. Just a good groovy number. Though I remember my favourite as a kid was If U Can't Dance but it sounds so tacky and... cringey now, lol. I can take or leave Spice on the whole really. It's a good pop album but Spiceworld knocked it out of the park so much it's not even funny.
May 16, 201213 yr Yes I no that by why did you not include bands that are not only of the same sex? I think Gezza is trying to explain that mixed groups do not count as 'boy' or 'girl' bands as they have both.
May 16, 201213 yr Great work with this once again Gezza, its been a very interesting read :D indeed I never knew that lyric was changed in 2 Become 1 :o
May 16, 201213 yr just a question are the spice girls the only act to have all their singles within this countdown? sorry if this has already been asked.
May 16, 201213 yr The line in 2 Become 1 was "Any deal that we endeavor, boys and girls feel good together" which I suppose is rather alienating! Poor Geri spent all night singing that line over and over again, trying to get it right (according to her autobiography), and then it ended up being scrapped for a line sung by Victoria!
May 16, 201213 yr Author just a question are the spice girls the only act to have all their singles within this countdown? sorry if this has already been asked. No, Boyzone also have all their singles here.
