I don't know how the hell fun. held off Bieber with THAT sales lead but I'm so glad they did. May Bieber never be #1 (unless he makes a decent song). Seems like We Are Young has peaked in weekly sales but still insanely strongs sales nonetheless. Great increases for Gotye, Nicki and Carly :D Eww at One Direction getting close to the 200k mark but they'll probably be back on the decrease next week as they had the Kids' Choice award boost last week.

BOOM!! Go Fun. What an absolute anthem

I didn't really have a problem with Bieber being #1 but the fact that he pratically BEGGED his fans to buy extra copies just to get there seemed so tacky.

Carry me freakin' home tonight! I can't believe fun. managed to hold Biebs off :D
I'm happy with that. Don't really get how it happened either unless streaming f***ed Justin over.

Adding this weeks digital songs sales onto the last update, I think it's now roughly;

1,538,000 - Glad You Came

835,000 - What Makes You Beautiful

So One Direction will pass one million next week. :D

Wow, streaming must be way more heavily weighted that we thought as Justin should have had 561 points (521 + 40) and Fun just 467 (363 + 104)!
I think you may be overestimating just how big an effect streaming has. It's like 5% of the formula.

@Big Mistake, you're actually going way too far with this new streaming being calculated. It doesn't effect the song by THAT much especially when JB started with more than 50% than fun. and yet the latter had big digital sales.

Hang on. So Big Mistake was right? :o :kink:

Well it was either #1 or #2.

Big Mistake said Bieber would be lucky to even go Top 5 at most so I still proved him wrong :D

Apparently Bieber's song wasn't available on most streaming sites, while fun. are #1 on the streaming chart, so I suppose it is plausible that streaming just helped a lot. (Well, 'plausible' is the wrong word as that is definitely the reason - it just seems very odd to see Bieber not getting #1 with a 157k sales lead and a good airplay opening!)

:kink: Good result.

Obviously you can't take away from a #2 still being great, and his sales are amazing... but I'm not sure I fancy his chances of this song getting another #1 opportunity, if it couldn't this week.

They've been doing it for so long and every track is pretty much OA/OS. That was part of the problem when the UK tried to do it imo, not everything was released that way and it needed time to get used to.

Big artists do great straight away with new releases and then other songs build up airplay and get more promo which then in turn means it climbs iTunes.

How come on air on sale works so well in the US?

It works in every country, EXCEPT the UK. Just look at the major music markets of Germany and Australia. We are the anomaly.

I can see it becoming the norm in the UK too. A lot of songs recently have had their release dates pushed forward because of demand, so hopefully it leads to all songs being oa/os eventually
