JLS are suffering the fate of so many who come from tv talent shows. It's no coincidence that as their airplay has dwindled their sales have diminished. Only those with established fanbases survive once they lose the support of the major radio stations. I also think shoving an album out every year doesn't help.
They're A-List on Radio 1, that to me doesn't suggest they've lost radio support. I would say interest in them has faded pretty spectacularly though...

Well no one else must be playing their single as they are barely top 50 in the radio chart. Have they just been added to the A list?

I just feel that the likes of radio 1 will be quick to ditch JLS altogether if they have a poor charting single whereas other non- talent show artists are given continued support regardless of how poorly their singles or albums fair.

I think JLS are suffering with the arrival of One Direction and The Wanted. Especially One Direction who I can imagine have nicked alot of their fans. The fact that there is continued buzz surrounding these two bands at the moment with their successes in America has made JLS look dull in comparison. They've also relied upon cd singles to boost them, and as a charity single - the physical cd used to be a must have for any charity event. So this also plays a part in their sales as cd sales take less of a percentage these days. For me, Beat Again is their best single and they haven't bettered it in terms of being a good song and having commercial appeal.

Midweek Charts: Weller's chart-topping bid kicks into life

Source: MW

15:45 | Wednesday March 21, 2012

By Paul Williams

Paul Weller has taken an early lead with Sonik Kicks in his quest for a fourth solo chart-topper on the UK albums chart as Katy Perry bids for a third number one single.

Weller’s newly-issued Island set was around 7,000 sales ahead of Decca’s Military Wives album In My Dreams up to the end of business on Tuesday with David Guetta’s Positiva/Virgin-issued Nothing But The Beat a few hundred sales further behind in third place, according to Official Charts Company Data.

Katy Perry has mounted a similar lead in the singles market with her brand new Virgin single Part Of Me, which heads what is currently a top three made up entirely of new entries. Around 8,000 sales behind Perry in second place at present is Atlantic’s Sean Paul with She Doesn’t Mind, while Syco’s Labrinth completes the top-three entries with Last Time cropping up in third spot.

Back on albums and Columbia’s US rock band The Shins are looking to score their first ever UK Top 10 album with fourth studio set Port Of Morrow. At the moment it appears as a new entry in eight, having sold around 6,000 copies up to the end of Tuesday.

Former chart toppers Our Version Of Events by Virgin’s Emeli Sande and 21 by XL’s Adele join Weller, Military Wives and Guetta among the week so far’s top five sellers, moving 2-4 and 3-5 respectively, while Polydor’s Lana Del Rey climbs 8-6 with Born To Die, Ed Sheeran drops 6-7 with Asylum/Atlantic debut +, Bruce Springsteen’s Columbia set Wrecking Ball slips 5-9 and Parlophone act Coldplay move back up 12-10 with Mylo Xyloto.

Having debuted at four last Sunday with Home Again, Polydor’s BBC Sound Of 2012 winner Michael Kiwanuka slips in this new chart week out of the Top 10 positions as he has the 11th top seller at this stage. X Factor runner-up Marcus Collins also looks like losing his Top 10 status after a week with his self-titled RCA debut slipping 7-14 in the midweeks.

This coming Sunday’s chart will include new entries from Columbia’s Miike Snow and Odd Future, Faithless with a live album on their Nate’s Tunes label and Mercury’s US country act The Band Perry.

In the singles market JLS will join Katy Perry, Sean Paul and Labrinth by also landing a new entry in the Top 10 with the RCA-issued Proud presently the week’s fifth top seller. A couple of thousand sales ahead of it in fourth place is Island’s Gotye featuring Kimbra single Somebody That I Used To Know, which achieved its fifth non-consecutive week at number one last Sunday. The Top 10 in the week to date is completed by Cash Money/Island’s Nicki Minaj dropping 2-6 with Starships, Positiva/Virgin’s David Guetta featuring Sia with Titanium slipping 6-7, the Atlantic-issued Wild Ones by Flo Rida featuring Sia ascending 5-8, Emeli Sande’s Virgin single Next To Me down 4-9 and another Guetta single Turn Me On, featuring Nicki Minaj, moving 8-10.

Outside the Top 10 Virgin’s You Me At Six are new at 19 currently with The Swarm, while Angel and Wretch 32’s newly-issued Island single Go In Go Hard is 35th.

At Dappy, #36  he should be out of the chart by Friday

What a horrible chart, only one climber Jason Mraz

Glad to see Taio out of the top 40 after only two weeks.

This JLS song is so, so dire. What a travesty! Glad it's 'only' #5.

Its not really just acts from talent shows - in fact barring G4 they're the only ones to have actually released 3 albums [from XF anyway].

Its just the shelf life of most pop acts tbh - I mean the Saturdays are basically the same, with significantly less album sales thrown into the mix. The Wanted are quite unstable with regards hits - they've had 1 per album, the rest have enterred highly and bombed or struggled to even register being a hit.

Look at other pop acts like Atomic Kitten, Liberty X or any of the other pop acts back in the day - very few could just pump out album after album of material. The market and fans move on. The same fate will befall 1D [who have exactly set the UK charts alight barring 1 single] and all the other new pop acts eventually.

For a group I think its difficult to sustain tbh especially when the song - Proud - isn't exactly very catchy or has a killer hook - sure its for charity, but really its not overly memorable as songs go.

I see JLS debuting at #7/8 depending on how much Friday helps - not sure who's been confirmed as a guest on the chart show either, but I'd assume it was them - and it's their lowest lead single to date.

Great to see David Guetta up to #3 on the albums chart - it's about time the album collected some more sales, 6 top ten hits and it's only just been certified platinum.

If the Military Wives overtake Paul Weller I won't be pleased, I wonder how close Guetta is to catching them both.

Joe McElderry is on 3 (albeit not the highest sellers, still 3)

Also, is it a whole top 10 of former (or current) number one albums, barring The Shins; who's at 11? Could we see this happen??

Nothing But The Beat peaked at #2 :P

A LITTLE bit late but woo at Odd Future currently showing in the top 30. I hope they can stay top 40. (Tyler, The Creator went to #21 with a solo album of his though so in a way it's a bit of an under-performance really).

Ugh, Tyler The Creator :puke:

Joe McElderry has released 3 and working on a fourth.

Re JLS the only way is down when you start a career like they did, that and the fact they are a boyband and will only last so long anyway. Their fans grow up. Having said that I wouldn't write them off quite yet. I loved them on XF but havent loved anything they have released since. Too many abs and not enough good songs.

Don't think the appeal of them has worn off as such, more that they were always so heavily dependent on physical sales and there are obviously less and less places to buy them these days, hence why they struggle. The fact that they don't translate too well to the download age probably says a lot about the general types of people who bought them in the first place though (i.e. those with a VERY casual interest who generally bought them as an aside with something else, say their weekly food shopping or while general browsing in Woolworths, rather than specifically going out in mind to buy the song).

What charity is the JLS single for anyway? I could have sworn Comic Relief was on last year

Indeed unless your on sychos label who get xfactor singles put in front of every supermarket check-out!!

Yeah, I see your point. But JLS are fairly established now too - they had their first hit three years ago in July and have had number ones in all those years since: 2009, 2010 and 2011. I personally think they're at the top of their game as far as talent and boybands go, and I daresay their concerts are well attended (ticket sales must surely count for a lot when weighing up a band's relevance). I also rate them a hell of a lot higher than Wand Erection! They've missed the top 10 only once in their career AFAIK (with their last track) and their new one will be a surefire return to the top 10. I think they'll be ok for a while. But thanks for elaborating. Oh, and JLS can't get dropped cos Marvin's hot! :D

I think Elton John and jls are different kinds of established??

Due to the new Radio 1 schedule from the first week of April, Wednesday update from Radio 1 is on the move with a 4pm start and 4:30 finish, my guess the mid report will follow from MW after the show. Fingers and toes crossed.
